Mines is not bolted in but and I have the same grip problem too! I've read several reviews that put this at the "look" pole not for real dance and inverted moves, unless you weigh about 120lbs...
the circle thing is the lock for the threads at the bottom. You are supposed to match the number on the screw threads at the bottom with the height of your ceiling so when you soft fit it at the top, you can use the wrench to secure it at the bottom and that piece locks the bottom and keeps it from unscrewing, you then secure that piece with one of the two giant plastic nuts and lock the first nut in place with the second.
