Parker appeared in the comedy Saved!, and a TV movie called Miracle Run, based on the true story of a mother of two sons with autism, as well as appearing in Craig Lucas' Reckless on Broadway.
Good for her for standing by her choices and not letting bad reviews affect her in any way. I definitely admire her as an actress and this interview definitely made me admire her even more. You just HAVE to have this kind of attitude about critiques in this business if you're going to be a successful actress of any kind. You have to take what people say with a grain of salt.
This would've been great to see live. Mary Louise is gorgeous and a great actress...I'm sure she would have been perfect for the role of Hedda. Also, Peter Stormare as Judge Brack...wow!
I wouldn't say she is full of herself. I have heard a lot of actors get frustrated when it comes to critics. Theater is a slowly dying art form, and critics should be working against that trend. Instead, most critics write truly cruel reviews for 90% of every play, then wonder why no one goes to see them.
Obviously, critics are supposed to judge these plays, but most of the reviews I read for this play were downright mean, like Parker addresses.
@RogersBase its true though. they havent studied theater, aside from watching plays, which is study in itself, but most of them really have no clue. its true its true.
I don't like what she has to say about appealing to the non-theater-goers. So, you're going to play it superficially, mug, make hit-you-on-the-head obvious choices, etc., instead of acting?
You can tell by the phony delivery of that pistol line that that's exactly what she meant. And because she reveals the secret there that she's Eilert's former lover who tried to shoot him, the line at the end of the act about playing with her father's pistols has no punch. Sad.
@Shamborn Agreed. What's sad (and curious) is how popular ML Parker has become. Ironically, she's been blessed with becoming a "critic's darling" early
in her career. This must account for her being "difficult to work with." Still, she's a fine actor.
@conewells WOW! It's really weird that you should reply TODAY to a comment I made 5 months ago about MLP... Just this morning I stumbled upon an old Village Voice review of a play Dead Man's Cell Phone:
"Not even trying to create this baseless role, [Mary-Louise] Parker buries its emptiness under a vapid comedy drawl and a hobble-gaited walk that any improv-troupe beginner could supply."
@Shamborn Weird, indeed. I get replies all the time from comments I made years ago. I was just in one of my Hedda Gabler fixations and came across this Diva's Yak.
From what I've read on the internet the play was getting bad reviews from critics although everyone I've listened to who's seen her in it aside form critics seemed to like it. she's probably speaking about past experiences though. And what she said about critics and theater is all true also
This woman is one of the greatest actors of our time. Fried Green Tomatoes, WEEDS, Angels in America. She is really really good at her job. Seeing her live would be a huge privilege.
This play was fantastic. The Times didn't give the production the props it deserves. It was done differently than most times... but whatever... read it if you want it your way!
You cannot compare a live theatre performance of a 19th century Norwegian play with a contemporary television series in which several takes are required to get the best scene, what an incredibly stupid comment!
i realize that the two are completely different but im just a fan ov the show i wasn't being completely serous mainly just because i like the show and marijuana
obviously it takes more talent to do live performances i meant it more i like her better on there not her acting
I just love live theatre which really separates the wheat from the chaff in terms of acting ability, but she is very good in Weeds and I'm quite looking forward to the next season.
its all good i dont really know anything about theatre or acting so i wouldn't know what i was talking about even if i did say she sucked at acting :-)

I love Mary Louise Parker but it is hysterical how full of herself she is. "They don't know more about theatre than I do."

Well, they're critics, not actors. She SHOULD know more than they do.

@RogersBase She's not full of herself--she's correct. Not all critics have the education and experience she has.
