  • Don O! I brewed this recently and I just took my first draw off the keg and I must say.... What a recipe! It turned out great, my best beer yet so far! I obviously could not use fresh hops so i went with this hop schedule:

    1oz Zeus 60 min

    .5 Centennial .5 Cascade 20 min

    .5 Centennial .5 Cascade 10 min

    1oz Centennial 1oz Cascade Flameout/Whirlpool Chilling for 20 mins

    1oz Zeus and 1oz Cascade Dry Hop

  • @bradh43085 They are perennials. they die back in the fall, and new chutes grow up in the spring. I cut them down to the ground when harvesting. This is how commercial hop farms do it too. Cheers.

  • Great video. What strain of hops is the easiest to grow? I am will planting for the first time next spring and I am looking for the right hop strain to start with.

  • @guysovereign I have heard people say Cascade hops grow more easily than other kinds in a variety of climates, so those would be a good one to start with. good luck.

  • Nice video. I just subscribed; I found you through the BTV crew. Just wondering, what kind of IBU's did you get on that beer, or do you not know exactly because they were homegrown hops? Off to watch a few more of your vids, cheers!

  • @onipar Cool. I was just at Chip's house last night. He moved and lives only blocks away now, ha. I have no idea on the IBU's. I racked this to secondary and it was not super bitter. It was not even as bitter as I might like but it tasted ok. I was not sure how much, if any, wet hop character I got from all those hops. Weird. And yeah, you can't know your IBU's unless you send beer to a lab to get it analyzed.

  • Hey Don be careful with your blowoff containiner set higher than your fermenter. I just had a batch of ipa get ruined because I did the same thing and some bad weather came through - it actually sucked sanitizer into my beer. We tried to salvage it but it didn't work. 5 gallons lost :( You probably only leave it set that way while it's bubbling then switch to airlock but thought I would share anyway just incase. Awesome video, as usual. All those hops must have smelled amazing!

  • @twinharbor Hey, thanks for the tip. Never thought of that. I just do it that way because it is convenient, but to have it lower might be a good idea. And yes, after the danger of blow off is done, I usually put on an airlock. It was an intense hop aroma coming off the kettle when putting those hops in!

  • @LongDogBrew No I bought commerical hops for the bittering. I wanted to for sure get a good amt of bitterness since it was supposed to be an IPA. I will also use a strong potent commerical hop for dry hopping (Columbus, same one I used for bittering).

  • Don, my father has some cascades should be ready in about a week. What formula did you use to judge the weight of the wet vs. dry hops?

  • @hootjr29 I have weighed my hops when harvesting over the years. If I have 10 oz of wet hops, once they are dry, they weigh 2 oz. So the dry weight is about 20% of what they were when wet. So for this I just kind of divided by 5 to get an approximate idea of what the dry weight would be. cheers.

  • Very very nice! How did you end up straining that out of the kettle? Sounds super tasty.

  • @danielpipitone I had a sanitized cloth grain bag over the sanitized funnel. I scoop out the wort once it is chilled with a sanitized pither. Once they would accumulate, I would squeeze the wort out and then put them in the discard bucket. I suppose I could have used sanitized tools even for that part, but I have done it this way in the past and if my hands are clean, I don't worry about it. So no big chunks of hops make it into the fermenter. cheers
