Vincent was a Turk, that duty make him bodyguard Hojo when the Mad Scientist was on Shinra's Mansion near Nibleheim. He then shot and experimented by Hojo, and reported as Dead in the line of Duty. Death for Turk was the same as "Retired". So Vincent was an Ex-Turk, I think.

@cloud584 As about twenty other people have said, He used to be one before Hojo did his crazy... Hojo thing and implanted the 4 "creatures" into Vincent Valentine. After that, Vincent was listed as Dead, and spent thirty or so years in a coffin mourning Luciera(sp?) before Cloud 'awoke' him and convinced him to help stop Sephiroth. He is officially the only living ex-TURK in existence because it is a commitment till "death".

If I remember correctly, Sephiroth started out good but went insanely bad toward the end. Genesis was corrupted by his own ideal of life and was a major antagonist throughout the game. I think he may have refigured things at the end though, but I still have doubts. Angeal kinda played both sides but had a tendency to helping Zack out because they were good friends.

I think the one winged angel idea - simply having a wing denotes something special about you..now what...exactly I'm not sure. It could stand for Jenova, the thing that threatens the planet.

Angeal is simply another first class and Zack's friend/mentor. I think the look-alike thing comes from simply Tetsuya Nomura's style...
