Since she's bringing religion into this, Galileo was greatly held back by religion. He was forced to repeal his belief that the Earth revolved around the Sun. The Catholic church said that God had made everything centered around his creation, so they assumed that Earth was the middle of the galaxy, even the whole universe.

People are free to homeschool their kids,
but the kids have to be tested periodically
to ensure that the minimum curriculum is being taught.

Who cares if kids are taught the Bible. It's not going to hurt them. They still learn math and other subjects. The problem is when people are closed-minded and think they are better than others because of their superficial beliefs.
