Black Eyed Peas fuckin suck!! I liked their first two albums then they went mega-pop afterwards. Kim stayed true to who she is as a person...much respect. Oh yeah, and I love her album Suga Hill.
I always wondered where she went to. I hate that things turned out like they did, but I'm glad she chose to keep her soul. Seems like she has a peace of mind as well!
@newage818 No, I think Kim is having the problem with the media's definition of Hip Hop and R&B these days. Like they said in the story, the record label told her she wasn't black enough. Can you imagine someone telling Tina Turner, Michael Jackson or Prince? Better yet, can you imagine someone telling Teena Marie or Madonna that she's not white enough? These record executives are one of the big reason why the music industry is in the terrible state that it's in. Keep your head up Kim.
FYI-I had an underground hip hop show in L.A. in the 90s after she left the group. Off the record she said that the boys wasn't giving her writing credit and refused to pay her. She was starving back then. I can't imagine seeing something you walk away from blow up like that..I always wondered if she was ok.. But this interview was really P.C. to jump start a career. The music industry has a formula and just like math if you don't follow the math rules it equal the wrong answer (for her career)

i don't agree with her... i mean, now the music and the music industry is changed...the peas evolved their music and i love their music...i love their albums from the first with kim hill to the last with fergie...btw i like the peas music and of course fergie...i think that it was good decision to "replace" kim hill with fergie...fergie bring freshness to the group and made them one the most famous group now!
@giovypeas Fame does not always mean good. What Fergie brings to the group, is acceptance to a demographic to which they were not accepted before, when Kim was with the band. I think they have suffered because of it. Their material is nonsensical and ordinary.
@newage818 noo justin timberlake and fergie is not hip hop white or black there not hip hop. Want to hear good white hiphop artist's listing too buck 65, eyedea, atmosphere, sage frances, cage, now thats hip hop, BEP went from being pharcyde status too one of the biggest sellouts, thats my problem and i think everybody else's problem with them. not because there multi racial.
Hey!!!! Where can I sellout. I wanna live in a mansion. Sounds like Pete Best the original drummer for the beatles, He left the band about a month before they hit it BIG.
@23firestorm Left the band? More like drop. George Martin thought he wasn't a great drummer and if the rest of the group didn't drop him, no contract. So they drop Pete Best like a bad cold. At least Kim made two records with the Peas but once again the record label got in the group's business and that's all she wrote. Bye bye Kim, Hello Fergie. I knew they sold out but BEP isn't the only one to get the blame. The fingers should be pointed at Interscope, radio, MTV & the listeners themselves.
I was a devotee of bep when Kim was the singer, and they were so on point...I was very saddened to see the direction they chose to go in...They do have some nice club jams occasionally...but I can't respect an artist that caves to "music machine" especially when they used to dog it in their earlier work.
I have your EP Kim and that song "Sunshine" that played in the piece was my fave by far...and you sang it with the Jones Girls, my Detroit ladies...I love your voice and work.
Black Eye Peas IMO, were a good group before the mainstream HOLLYWOOD pop candy "MY Humps" crap that was released to the masses. It's becoming a trend (SADLY) where it's all about who's hot, what's selling & the money more than the ARTISTRY itself. I applaud Kim for bowing out gracefully when she saw that the group were heading toward another direction. I hope she releases Pharaoh's Daughter sometime soon! Peace.
no offense, just keeping it real...am I the only one that is noticing Kim in several pair of hot pants at the end...make-up and posing sensually...walking from millions and world recognition of your artistry gotta sting..DAMN! DAMN! DAMN!
Yeah. I'm glad someone of her caliber wasn't running around with Target logos on her ass or something, like the other members did recently.
The Peas are a classic case for the art vs. money conflict in music, especially today. I, for one, couldn't stand their post-Kim stuff, and'll be checking out her albums when I can.
I definitely agree with her on that. A lot of very successful songs now really suck.. lil wayne's lick it like a lollipop and that beautiful girls song that was a smash hit.. any chris brown song. And of course the song she mentioned: my humps. I like BEP's latest song but some of them are terrible.
my comment didn't post - i tried to say i saw kim hill perform live a few years ago and was floored - the same way when i saw erykah badu for the first time - only thing is the music she releases and the music she performs live don't feel the same - and she moves 2 slow releasing new music - or moving forward with her music biz 2 ever build up a following or break big - but never say never w/ confidence like hers
I kind of figured that the BEP had a Black female in the group and did a littler research and here I am watching this video. What a shame, this is so typical. I like the BEP too. The music seemed much deeper earlier in their career. I wish Kim much success. Where's the love?
Labels prefer to put now girls who make the beautiful in their clips while they do not even know how to sing And I think especially to Fergie, Rihanna, Cassie...
Black Eyed Peas was much better before with Kim Hill
its all well and good maintaining integrity and not selling out. im a fan of pre-Fegie BEP, but surely kim hill could have swallowed her pride for a bit, sold out, made millions off stupid kids who like catchy retarded beats and then when shes made all her money go back to doing the shit she really likes. sure beats making music out of a garage.
smart artists like this need to play it smart - like Nas.
sorry no offense but i prefer class to skank....kim hill is definitely my choice.i was never into mainstream 'hip-pop' anyway.fergie maybe more saleable but her music just doesnt do anything for me.
Kim you are beautiful and talented! I remember watching BEP videos with you back in the day and loved them! I find them a little two cheese these days but that's there thing. I wish you the best. Never stop making art! Remember what Tribe said about the industry being shady : )
BEP pretty much became unlistenable after Fergie joined. If it's all about the money... cool. Just don't claim to be Hip Hop and spit snake oil. Either way, I've heard some of Kim's stuff in the underground. I became a fan pretty quickly.
Fergie is just another female JT. A white girl who appeals to white kids to make them feel they're "down" with something they think is Hip Hop. Hey, it is what it is.
You know something I only know BEP from when they went mainstream I had never heard of them. After listening to their latest release and actually liking it I wanted to find out if they ever had a Black female vocalist. Because Fergie seems to be trying to the Black female powerhouse singer. Not to say that she doesn't naturally have strong vocals but with the inflection in her voice it seems a little contrived. I figured they were replacing a Black woman. Fergie represents the new Black female.
What a beautiful woman! I absolutely LOVE Kim Hill! The BEP's lost thier soul when she left. And I high commend her for not sacrificing her talent and belief's just because it's considered by the mainstream public the "right thing to do" to be successful. It's shameful that black artists STILL have to accessorize thier music and image with a white woman to do just that. With true black artists like Kim Hill, there is still hope left for black music without the "yt" factor splitting it apart.
honestly, I don't think kim would've made black eyed peas multi-platinum..especially the image. it sux that music is like that but its true. Not only that, Fergie's talent stands out beyond any of the group members. and her style of music is just catchy and trendy.i believe Fergie made B.E.P. successful
Fergie was asked to sing a few tracks with the band one one album then they made her permanent by the next album. I don't agree that Fergie MADE them successful, yes she does contribute but the general make up or the new direction they went in is what appeals to the mainstream. Which is POP/HIP HOP. I think her being White singing "black" gives them further crossover appeal.
since you think you know so much about me, i thought i'd reach out myself. i respect you are a fan of BEP & you should be. i can't blame you for being misinformed, that's why i did access hollywood ...for folks like you. the industry constantly labels things to support THEIR agenda & justify actions that are reprehensible. so the wording that i was "featured" in the liner notes had nothing to do w/ my role. fergie made them a household name & that's a huge accomplishment.

I understand my tone may have been misleading (in this flat medium). But IMO you don't need to be redeemed. Your tracks with BEP are clearly superior to those with the new kid they incorporated.
I came across a Rap Pages interview BEP did at the beginning (you may remember) and in it their keep it real sentiments contrasted strongly with their defensive interview in Blender that came out right around the time of their new success. One of the boys literally said "Yeah we sellin out -- we sellin out stadiums."
I only mention that to say that clearly they made a conscious decision to do a 180 of sorts, and I commend you for bouncing on such a reckless move. They were a better group then, and whatever you had to do with that on record or behind the scenes, props. It just seems disingenuous the way the show equates your role with Ferguson's.
But how do you like Will's solo stuff (for BBE and the like)?
i don't think that's what they were trying to say, nor was i. the point is that millions of new fans had very little knowledge of my work. the same work that contributed to the very foundation of the band. our roles were very different because of the choices we made in how we chose to be presented to the public.
that's the point i wanted to make...all of us have a choice. no one can say they gave into industry pressures w/out acknowledging they played a part in it. that goes for me too. i quit...they blew up, my choice, and flavored ramen it was lol. as for will's BBE release, brilliant record, especially the song w/ terry dexter.
