What a great sound - and complete mastery of the instrument. Nice to hear him on a swing tune rather than the ballad style he's made his signature.

@berndernst : Danke für das Kompliment! Hab´ Dich während des Musikstudiums bei Marsalis garnicht gesehn. Warst Du die ganze(!) Zeit nicht einmal in der Julliard?

natürlich kann till auch nen fetzigen bigbandlead soun machen aber grad bei soli un inner combo spielt er fast nur diesen luftigen ton und der is sehr sehr schwierig
in der mitte spielt er doch mit nem ganz anderen sound

lol dude, he's doing that at will. its a very unique technique, wynton does it all the time. didn't you watch all of this video? he definitely doesn't use the airy tone the entire performance.

it depends on how you look at it. if you look at it through a trumpet players eyes, his tone sucks. but if through a jazz artist's eyes, his tone is relaxing, sexy, a whisper, and just a good sense of style over all. also later on in his solo he gets rid of the whisper. so we know he can do both
