  • very helpful

  • I noticed this behavior when I began watching japanese movies a while back. I immediately recognized it because this is how it is in the navajo culture also. Alot of true feelings are held back for the harmony of the family and community. I can totally identify with this.

  • So basically like having no backbone is what it sounds like.

  • i have that crocodile to! =D

  • HOLY CRAP!!!!! AARON IS MY DOPPLEGANGER!!!!

his nose is a bit different that mine, and voice too. but holy JEEBUS, i keep seeing myself in his face, its friggin creepy. but cool at the same time.

  • Geeks are awesome ;3 these vids are really helpfull thankyouuuu :D

  • wow you guys are geeks lol

  • You guys are soo random! i like it :)

  • MAHAHA XD I used to have that alligator tooth game.

    << It hurt.

  • This seriously describes PERFECTLY my experience in Japan. I lived with a family, and only saw their tatemae. When the honne came out I was so shocked to realize things I'd been doing wrong, and that everything hadn't been as peaceful as it appeared. Nevertheless, tatemae keeps the atmosphere so comfortable and harmonious wherever you go :)

  • this is great thankyou very much for this info:Di love learning about Japan!!!!!<3

  • Another great one, and definitely one of the best explanations of "inner/outer" social dynamic I've ever seen.

  • Japanese girl- were you peaking up my skirt? me- its kind of hard not to cause its already easly visible....seriously!

  • WAY TO MUCH MOE IN JAPAN.

  • So would a good example of honne and tatemae be when taxi drivers refrain from screaming when a passenger slams the trunk door on their hands? :P Haha but in all seriousness, great vids! :) *subscribes*

  • common japanese stereotypes for girls:

1.) all japanese girls love hello kitty

2.) all japanese girls take like anime characters

4.) all japanese girls are too moe

  • drinking on the job.

  • I guess that's the "stoicism"

  • I love Hard Gay! He's so freakin hilarious!

  • @ImIwilliamImI

You watch Japanese TV or something?

    OMG O_o

  • is it true that America made all nips flat faced after the atomic bombs were dropped?

  • @123attivo

Is it true that you are dumb enough to actually seriously think about that?

The answer is no, if you didn`t know.

  • @potatoheadhaoy

you are even more retarded for replying

  • @123attivo

    Touche >:P

  • Kevin is so cute (:

  • so you're gonna tell us about japanese sterotypes drinking beer . that's so lame

  • That concept sounds very similar to English "modesty."

  • americans are like this too. only, here in america, it is either how you were raised or your personality. but in japan, it is reinforced in their culture as part of their expression of politeness, discipline and respect towards one another.

  • @deviouskittin True. I've heard that some people in the south of the US are raised like that (the southern belle/gentleman) where you say one thing but mean another (bless him, well isn't that special, etc.)

  • @speekit Super happy luck for win, ancestor honor.

  • I totally had that toy when i was young, and you always get a small heart attack when it suddenly chomps! Hahaha. Really cool videos too!

  • Do you Live in Seattle. I reconize that street in the beginning.

  • honne = REAL.... tatemae = FAKE... simple as that...

  • I think the rule of "honne" and "Tatemae" applies in lots of Asian countries, so actually I don't find that weird. I think it's polite actually.

  • wats was that thing at the start

  • Love your vids, just you two guys sitting explaining things and chat.. chill out, and they're very informative as well!

  • I've heard something about japanese workers, that they always use tatemae on work, but they get really honne on their boss at one special occasion.

  • @heartstationai naw, kanpai is just like saying "cheers" before drinking

  • people do that alot in Britain but we don't have a word for it, its kind fading away more bit of a generational thing.

  • Great video =) Good job =)

  • the jap dude is cute for being old 0_0

  • I always wondered what that was!

Gosh, thanks for clearing that up, ya'll! xD

  • cool...

  • haha i love this:D

  • YOU GUYS ARE GREAT!

  • u two are great...i learn a lot...honmani!hahahahaha...gambatte ne!

  • those concepts seem so inherently japanese but there are lots of other cultures where honne and tatemae are used, though not necessarily based on "country" but rather the group's socioeconomic status or gender. Like, it's probably more common for women to say one thing just to be polite and not make waves rather than tell someone how they really feel, so as to preserve the other person's feelings or to not offend them.

  • Well, I bet the problem is the connotation of "hai".

  • awesome videos guys its very informal and by the way....

    Kevin is so Kawii! ^^

  • @anitaAKAanime Kawaii*

    かわいい

  • @anitaAKAanime itz かわいい (kawaii)

  • Very nice video! I knew about honne and tatemae, but you made me understand things I didn't know.

    Good job!

  • We do honne and tatemae here in Ireland and people don't think it's two-faced. Might be something unique to island people, I don't know.

  • wow dude with the black sweater is really cute. that's my honne.

  • This is very informative, thanks for posting.

Honne = What you're really thinking

    Tatemae = What you say

Wa = Harmony (never disturb the WA! xD)

Not too confusing, just need to remember... *strain*

  • Hah, you guys are doing nice on the videos =]! I think alot of westerners get confused when they take the Japanese's politeness too seriously.

One of my friends spent a month in Tokyo with a host family, her and her host family promised to stay and touch, I think mostly out of politeness. Anyway, she sent alot of mail to the family but never got a respond. I'm so looking forward to the rest of your videos!

  • This is so complicated, and i am so confused.

  • Its a mixed race post. What I really find annoying Is people like you (garagsale) who serve only to propagate racial anamosity. Grow up please.

  • what about the japanese stereotype for japanese girls, being one my self. its awful

  • Hey ConsularRevan! Thanks for your comments.

Yes, I have experienced some of that animosity. It's not necessarily directly related to WWII, but it definitely exists. It's funny though because a lot of Japanese culture is tied to those of their neighbors [although they often won't admit it] .

To answer one of your other questions, there are a lot of things in Japan that are 'ahead of the times,' but there is also a lot that is not. Running out of avail. characters here... thanks again!

    Aaron

  • Also, have you ever personally experienced animosity between the Japanese and the Chinese/Japanese and Koreans? Many still rag on about the dark history of Japan during WWII.

  • I've never experienced honne and tatemae, but I have another 'out there' stereotype I'd like to ask you about. What do you guys think about the super mechanized society notion people tend to have about Japan? Where everyone has cellphones/the latest technology, vending machines on every corner with anything and everything, robots (lol), ect. I know that not all of Japan is modern, but are some cities, like Tokyo, 'ahead of the times' technology wise?
