I noticed this behavior when I began watching japanese movies a while back. I immediately recognized it because this is how it is in the navajo culture also. Alot of true feelings are held back for the harmony of the family and community. I can totally identify with this.
his nose is a bit different that mine, and voice too. but holy JEEBUS, i keep seeing myself in his face, its friggin creepy. but cool at the same time.
This seriously describes PERFECTLY my experience in Japan. I lived with a family, and only saw their tatemae. When the honne came out I was so shocked to realize things I'd been doing wrong, and that everything hadn't been as peaceful as it appeared. Nevertheless, tatemae keeps the atmosphere so comfortable and harmonious wherever you go :)
Haha! What a joke. Japanese guys are mindless drones doing what they're told; never thinking outside of the box. Japan is simply a colony of worker bees. Japan is a horrible place to live; hence the extremely high suicide rates. Japan is pro-women, anti-men. Women do fine there, as the society fits them, but men do horrible. Men are feminized, they're highly depressed, and they make up the largest chunk of those suicides
A lot of asian girls out there claiming to be "attracted" to white guys are only attracted to white entitlement and privilege without even knowing it. Often deluding themselves that they found the right (white) guy, as they continue on in their empty superficial relationship.
So would a good example of honne and tatemae be when taxi drivers refrain from screaming when a passenger slams the trunk door on their hands? :P Haha but in all seriousness, great vids! :) *subscribes*
americans are like this too. only, here in america, it is either how you were raised or your personality. but in japan, it is reinforced in their culture as part of their expression of politeness, discipline and respect towards one another.
@deviouskittin True. I've heard that some people in the south of the US are raised like that (the southern belle/gentleman) where you say one thing but mean another (bless him, well isn't that special, etc.)
those concepts seem so inherently japanese but there are lots of other cultures where honne and tatemae are used, though not necessarily based on "country" but rather the group's socioeconomic status or gender. Like, it's probably more common for women to say one thing just to be polite and not make waves rather than tell someone how they really feel, so as to preserve the other person's feelings or to not offend them.
Hah, you guys are doing nice on the videos =]! I think alot of westerners get confused when they take the Japanese's politeness too seriously.
One of my friends spent a month in Tokyo with a host family, her and her host family promised to stay and touch, I think mostly out of politeness. Anyway, she sent alot of mail to the family but never got a respond. I'm so looking forward to the rest of your videos!
Yes, I have experienced some of that animosity. It's not necessarily directly related to WWII, but it definitely exists. It's funny though because a lot of Japanese culture is tied to those of their neighbors [although they often won't admit it] .
To answer one of your other questions, there are a lot of things in Japan that are 'ahead of the times,' but there is also a lot that is not. Running out of avail. characters here... thanks again!
Also, have you ever personally experienced animosity between the Japanese and the Chinese/Japanese and Koreans? Many still rag on about the dark history of Japan during WWII.
I've never experienced honne and tatemae, but I have another 'out there' stereotype I'd like to ask you about. What do you guys think about the super mechanized society notion people tend to have about Japan? Where everyone has cellphones/the latest technology, vending machines on every corner with anything and everything, robots (lol), ect. I know that not all of Japan is modern, but are some cities, like Tokyo, 'ahead of the times' technology wise?
very helpful
