insulation and heaters do the trick..like any other room...and if insulated right you'll have plenty of eat ( since last time i checked heat rises and attics are in the ceiling)
Actually its more like how do you keep an attic area COOL. Heat naturally flows upward, so an attic room conversion is problematic because all your heat floats up there, cooling the 1st floor down. If you don't put radiant barrier in the rafters you will get a double shot of heat from the sun too.
Roof rafters are not usually designed to carry ceiling load, nor do they have enough room to properly insulate/ventilate. For the costs of what you are doing why the hell wouldnt you just recommend adding on to the first floor?
Last time I walked in my attic, I fell through the floor. I redid the drywall in the floor below. I was trying to store a lot of fiberglass in the attic, and I figured I could store more and more crap in there. It appears I walked into a weakspot and fell through. I've been questioning if I should redo the flooring in there. I know there are slabs that look like a flat hand (karate chop hand) with the pinky on the flat surface and the thumb toward the air. How should I redo the flooring?
That is quite a transformation!

Thats all good, but what do you do about the cold getting in?? Attics, esp in the winter, can be REALLY cold!

By the way, the house I am in is over 100 years old. I'd guess it was made in 1887 or maybe 1913. I don't know.
