  • We will be united one day

  • thank you good man. Green fields grow again.

  • I'm sitting here and I'm crying .

  • I'm American, and I always thought that issues between the English and the Irish were more or less completely over. Then I came to youtube...

  • Magnificent, heart-rending an oh so true!...

  • The condition of fallen humanity: to be in the presence of such a saintly artist, and the promote that which is unsaintly,.

  • Beutiful song! Ireland will again be free and united!

    Solidarity from Sweden

    TAL

  • wot a song..wowww!!!!

  • you're an amazing singer Tommy!! we miss you

  • fuck this FGAU

  • im british but wish i was irish, ireland has great music, heritige and culture

  • @1262561 well kill yourself and see if reincarnation is true

  • @JimBell1984 What a nasty comment in reply to a tribute.

  • @1262561 So do the English, please don`t ever wish away your Englishness. We are a great people & always have been!!! I agree Ireland has over the years had some of the greatest singers ever. Remember you are English. Mind you having re read your comment you could be any of the other three parts of Britain.

  • @Teddyb1939 please remember that not all of the other 3 parts of the uk are free as is your homeland but one day it my come to us all and this we pray

  • @mistyblude16 Of course the other countries are free, the strength of the union,is the union, I strongly believe that tha vast majority of the people of the British Isles would prefer to be part of the whole. Try to envisage some of the freedom that exists in wherever you are from & the many countries where there is none. The bombings that have been perpetrated by terrorists on the peoples of the British Isles is nothing short of disgusting. Harrods,Warrington Kings cross,Omagh.etc.

  • @Teddyb1939 thank you for your views we all know terrorists can not justify the killing of innocent people and get off with it. they turn people agenst people and this is their way but a united uk our not it will not stop them please down load a song by paddy reilly called there were roses to see what these people are all about

  • @Teddyb1939 i had the chance

of a lifetime to go and see these magnifecent four gent's way back in 1966 in Hamilton outside Glasgow this you just can't takeaway god bless-them

  • I was fortunate to get to see tommy live. I got to meet him. He was an amazing singer and a great storyteller. Very warm heart and just an all around good guy to talk to. Tommy, you're music touched me when you were here and it still touches me now that you're gone. Someday when I'm on the other side, I will see you again and thank you again in person for what your music has done for me. Miss you, mate.

  • Tommy Makem touched so many people in his life. His place on E.57th St.in Manhatten was so hospitable to all.He was so friendly to all who visited there. He is missed for his music, his pride in his Irish culture and religion. He was so easy to meet. His time with the Clancy Bros.is legendary.God Bless you Tommy you mean a lot to all of us.

  • I love this version. Thanks Tommy from the 5th Province.

  • r.i.p. tommy makem

  • ok now youtube sorry to say this but the dubliners did not have tommy makem in the group the clancy brothers had him.and damnit they where the best group ive ever heard.

  • A wonderful singer and Irishman. He or his music will never be forgotten. As an Irish-American listening to him and the Clancy Brothers and all the others make me proud. Thank you Tommy and say Hi to Liam.

  • @jimbronxny Thank you Jim for sending me this song!

  • I miss Tommy Makem so much but to have this clip and especially this song, his legacy to future generations, makes it just a little more bareable. I got to see Tommy perform with Liam Clancy back in 1987 and I was lucky enough to meet them both. Tommy was just how I thought he would be, light-hearted and quick-witted with the ever dry Irish humor that had surrounded me in my family. I loved him then and I miss him now.

  • I miss his voice but the Gods don't....he's up there. What a beautiful song and I will always love his words, songs.and music-thx for posting this

  • Arguably the greatest Irish folk singer of all time! How I miss him!

  • Both my parents were Italian-American. I don't have a drop of Irish blood, but this song puts a lump in my throat.

I saw Tommy Makem perform in the 90s. It was a privilege seeing him. RIP.

  • Keady's finest.

  • That was MAGNIFICENT!!.... a true masterpiece.

  • RIP my dearest. Oh, how you are missed. We first met when I was 12--and I shall not say how many years have passed since then--but never did I think that you would leave so soon. Thank you for the lovely tribute. I light a candle.

  • A song to be very proud of!!! RIP Tommy

  • Thank you so much for posting this video,

    beautiful...

  • Again, Thank you! I loved this man...and we are the poorer for his departing...what a fine place heaven must be with such as Tommy

  • I was blessed to have Tommy sing this to me at Marquette University in the late 60s when I was expecting my first child. He hoped I never knew the pain of the "mother" in the song which I know is my beloved Ireland. I saw him and Liam again in 86 in PA and am so blessed. They are joined in Heaven now, in all the green fields, and we are the poorer for their loss.

  • @melrosemiss Thank you for your lovely words and thoughts. They touched me when I read them. I'm glad you got to meet him in person. God Bless.

  • ladies and gents this man sang this song at the seige of derry and lifted that seige on his own with this voice thats shaking now in his dotage, GOD BLESS YOU TOMMY MAKEM.

  • UNITED IRELAND!!!

  • Gyönyörű!

  • In my case I am an Irish Brit and my strangers are in gorse hill and stretford and are criminal. Not black or white, not gay or straight not men or women. But male and female criminals crushing morality out of my beloved gorse hill. They will not move even though they robbed old people. Masked themselves up for intimidation or did things in the dark of night because they knew they were doing wrong. The IRA used criminals as did their opposites including the british goverment. Get rid of them.

  • This is the most patriotic song of them all.thanks Mr.Makem it just gets better and timeless.

  • its such a said song!!!! its so powerful and has such a great meaning

  • The "flutter" in his voice is called vibrato...very common in experienced singers

  • r.i.p

  • 'hahaha ew'.....???????

  • MIGHTY

  • Just me.....isn't a bit slow?????

  • suppose to be how he wrote it

  • I just meant that the video seems a little slower than I've heard on the albums. Might just be me.

  • Very powerful song indeed.

    RIP Tommy...

  • What Passion! What Nationalism ! wether you agree or not with thepolitics of it, you cannot deny the Passion ,nor the love for the country!

  • AN IRISH ANTHEM Go mbeannaí Dia duit

  • What a song, and what a performance. We can take this all over the world and show everybody that we're Irish and unbeaten - Brits Out! Up the Republic!

  • @lamhdeargabu25 Everybody will always know you are Irish, by the splatter of some innocent childs blood and brains dripping from your hands and that lovely smell of Semtex in the air. Unbeaten? You didnt even come out to fight. Much easier to kill innocent civilians and children isnt it? Shame on you and your country.

  • @brendantmcguire Me Irish? sorry mick not me..

  • @brendantmcguire you cant even spell english correctly you bigoted idiot its a forgotten war HISTORY leave it prick

  • @brendantmcguire thats the most disgusting comment ive ever seen on youtube.congrats you sick bastard

  • @colinwt that is sooo rich coming from an english man.maybe if your people were not so dedicated to controling and subgegating other people and cultures.people would not have to driven to such a sad situation.800 years!you were murdered if you spoke irish.no irish man can own a horse.a famine all because of your peoples lust for power.shame on you and your country

  • @daveeol Hi, not all english men are the same, and the same applies in Ireland, I love the irish music and Ireland, one day I want to go to Northern Ireland.

  • @gilbo582 We'd prefer the North of Ireland, less likely to piss people off down south or nothern nationilists. Just a suggestion mind you & not compulsory but may save you a punch on the nose if you happen to be talking to the wrong piss head

  • @borledx don't understand?

  • @lamhdeargabu25 I`m English but no politics in listening to this wonderful rendition of a great song.Tommy. Luke. Ronnie Liam & all the other great singers from Ireland, Rest in piece

  • @Teddyb1939 you want no politics in this song? then make partition history, and allow the right of return for those you've cast out, and the right of EXILE for those who don't embrace the land they've been blessed by god to be in. And then, this song will be a beautiful piece of history, not a beautiful tragedy of the present.

  • @herzimmerfrei I only know what I see & read about. I see no positives in bombings & killings no matter by whom. I have already said that in my opinion the I.R.A bombings on the English mainland,Harrods [where catholics were also killed] Warrington[innocent women & children, killed] The carnage vented on the City of London & probably the most horrendous Omagh. this was an act that equalled any barbaric act ever, not only bombing but planned to lure innocent people towards the bombs, Animals!!"

  • @herzimmerfrei The people you want to exile must embrace the the land otherwise they would leave willingly also it seems to me no one was cast out. The song is in my opinion a masterpiece by a great singer. I admit I don't have 1st hand knowledge of Ireland, never having been there but I doubt that I would be welcome with a London accent. I would love to play golf at the magic golf clubs anywhere in Ireland.

  • @Teddyb1939 Theres 200,000 Brits living in Ireland so I doubt very much u'd have any problems here. Most English peple I meet here love it.. With regards the "cast out" part, how do you imagine they fit almost a million Brits into NE Ireland? I'll tell you how, through ethnic cleansing 16th century style thats how and thats a wound thats not easy to heal while Brit maintains a prescence in Ireland.

  • @borledx As an Englishman I see things with no hatred against Ireland or the Irish people. All the people of the island of Ireland are Irish.I see no difference in catholic or protestant, its about time that offspring of both religions were taught, love & peace, not war, bombs & barbarity. All the history & it is history is not worth one killing. The bombings carried out in the name of one side or the other are acts of depraved animals.

  • @Teddyb1939 Sounds like your under the illusion created by the BBC propaganda machine that the conflict in the 6 counties is catholic vs protestant. The conflict exists because the majority of people in Ireland do not wish a British prescence. BUt it seems the Brit Govt only abide by the rules of democracy when it suits themselves.

  • @borledx Of course it is catholics V protestants anyone with an ounce of sense can see that, who on earth do you think is killing each other then? The British would probably be delighted to leave the island of Ireland but the consequences would be catastrophic. Civil war, more than there is at present, mad bombers & killers running riot, The trouble with Ireland is that all are brought up with the teachings of older people who should know better, that the other side is evil. Take off the blinds,

  • @Teddyb1939 Actually the provos targetted almost exclusively members of the security forces, which is line with their claim that their fight is with the Brits & not the protestant community in the 6 counties. Like I said, BBC propaganda. Also if we have a civil war, so be it, ITS NONE OF BRITAINS BUSINESS. Better a short sharp conflict than this long drawn centuries old conflict that the Brits caused with their bumbling

  • @borledx I tell you what chum, you are so full of hatred & are so blinkered with your mixed up views that I do not want any more contact with you. Wishing a civil war, what next? The IRA /Provos are a load of murdering scum as are the loyalist murderers, You just remember this, All the natives of the island of Ireland are to any other nation or to any other people ALL BLOODY IRISH. If you can't see the stupidity of your argument, god help you & all the other people of Ireland, Luke,Sean & Tommy.

  • @Teddyb1939 Wow your so conditioned by the BBC your actually projecting how they tell you to think onto me. When did I express a desire to see a civil war exactly? At what point did I express hatred for any1? The power of brainwashing never ceases to amaze me. if the IRA are scum what does that Make the Brit army & their "dirty war" e.g. the dublin & monaghan bombings, the ballymuphy massacre, bloody sunday, etc. Who gave Brit the right to say what is what in Ireland, thats what im asking?

  • @borledx He actually did call "loyalist murderers" scum too, so presumably that means he agrees with you about those events. Speaking as a foreign bystander, it seems to me that England's meddling in Ireland was wrong, but it happened already and can't unhappen. NI has protestants now whether one likes it or not. What do you propose to do with them in your "united" Ireland? What is gained by changing the status of NI against the wishes of most of its people? What if they resist?

  • @Xezlec Your missing the fundamental problem that Reps have i.e. that NI has no right to exist. Its an arbitary line drawn across Ireland to ensure a unionist majority. A majority that is slimming every year due to changing demographics. From a ratio of 65:35 at partition to almost level today & growing every year, which is why Reps agreed to go down the political route. If caths vote out of the union, Brit has 2 accept it under the GFA. Prods can then have the stick r the carrot

  • @borledx I'm not "missing" it, I'm explaining the thinking underlying it. The line was drawn around the ethnic minority so they could rule themselves instead of being ruled by a group that hates them. As you say, the demographics then changed so that this line was no longer a good representation of the boundary between the two groups. I don't quite understand what stick and carrot you're talking about, and you still haven't said what you think should be done with this minority group.

  • @Xezlec No u r missing it, u could never draw a line around the minority group because the populations r too mixed up e.g. 2 of the 6 co's had nationalist majorities, as did Derry City. Also its ridiculous to say that the minority are hated. Hundreds of thousands of protestants where left behind in the ROI & they were given the same rights as every1 else( the 1st president of Ireland was protestant), unlike the apartheid system against catholics in the North supported by the Brit Govt

  • @Xezlec As regards what should be done with them, the answer is NOTHING. They should/would b treated just like anybody else with the same rights. But if they start widespread random killings of civilians, it will turn very, very nasty. Then it may turn into a truly sectarian conflict, in which case the most likely outcome is the unionist community will be reduced to the point of insigificance. In the end the minority dont get 2 tell the majority what to do & they r the minority.

  • @borledx Not hated? They certainly don't seem loved. The two cultures in NI refuse to even interact. All the arguments you're making could have been made by the English about the whole of Ireland remaining part of the UK. But the Irish are a separate people from the English, so it made sense for them to be a separate country. The Catholic/nationalist Irish also seem to be a separate people from the protestants in NI who self-identify as British. How is this situation any different?

  • @Xezlec Their not loved, y wud they b?, they've brought nothing but blood, pain & misery since they 1st came here & stole the land their living on. But people r still willing to accept reality & we have to live with them(but not be ruled by them). If u cant see the difference between Irish people wanting a country in Ireland & British people wanting a country in Ireland( & an apartheid country at that with Londons full support), I dont know what 2 say 2 u

  • @borledx Granted I could be mistaken, but "they've brought nothing but blood, pain & misery...& we have to live with them" does not sound to me like a basis for fair and objective governance. To an outsider, it sounds like a country run by you would be intrinsically biased against them in every disagreement. That's what I was saying.

  • @Xezlec U dont hav a clue of the mindset of either side. An apology from the unionists, LOL. As much as the Israeli believes all the biblical lands of Israel r theirs by God given right, the unionists in the North believe that they have that same divine right in Ireland. Reps on the other hand view their primary enemy as the British Govt. Unionists being a mere afterthought as the UVF/UFF have never posed a serious threat 2 the IRA, prefering to killing ordinary Catholics instead

  • @borledx OK, so using your example then, you're saying that you think if Israel and Palestine were unified under one country, and Jews somehow became a minority there, the problem would be solved and there would finally be peace, and the Jews would be treated just fine?

  • @Xezlec NO I think the Jews should be thrown out of palestine altogether buts thats another story. AS for support dropping thats Bullshit, the Northern Ireland Life & times survey obviously being your source. Sinn Fein have continously grown since the GFA & when catholics have enough of a majority, it will become a real issue again & only then will we know. An if after the inevitable referendum it does pass, unionists will have to accept it, leave or drown in their own blood.

  • @borledx By "thrown out of Palestine", I take it you mean out of the entire nation currently referred to as Israel? You want to evict 7 million people at once and create the biggest refugee crisis in the entire recorded history of the world? Who gets them? What about those who can't afford to leave? How do you tell who is Jewish? And what about those in the far-left Israeli parties (a substantial fraction of the population) who have always fought hard for Palestinians and their rights?

  • @Xezlec AS I said "thats another story".

  • @borledx Having done some googling, it looks like there are fewer (but not zero) accusations of discrimination in the republic. I'll tell you what: being an outsider myself, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that there would be no more discrimination under Irish rule than there already is under UK rule. I still don't really understand why it's worth making the switch though, even if that's the case. You make a bunch of Republicans happy and a bunch of Unionists angry.

  • @Xezlec Also its not a matter of making Reps happy at Unionists expense, its a matter of right & wrong. Would you feel the same in 20 years if lets say the Pakistanis decide to draw a line around NE England(if they were to become a majority) & call it Pakistan?? And then to add insult to injury, discriminate on every level against the English people that are there, in effect making them 3rd class citizens in their own country. I think not.

  • @borledx I would fight the first generation of invaders, absolutely. But if we failed to fight them off, then 5 centuries later, after the invading culture had put down roots and become a part of the landscape, I think I would try to accept them and just settle for an apology and some kind of acknowledgment on their part that their ancestors had no right to do what they did. If there's discrimination in NI, that's awful and should be fixed. But surely there's prejudice both ways?

  • @Xezlec Your talking about accepting an apology, LOL. Do you honestly believe the unionist community will come out & say "ah were sorry about all that ethnic cleansing back in the day & stealing your land & all". Also "We're sorry about running an apartheid state in NI until the IRA showed us the error of our ways" I mean really what planet are you living on? As 4 "predjudice both ways", again I'll point you 2 the ROI where protestants are indistuinguishable from any1 else in society

  • @borledx We're going in circles, and it doesn't matter anyway because support for a unified Ireland has been dropping for years according to the polls in NI, even among Catholics. So it's never going to happen no matter what anyone wants.

  • what a song

  • he looks so aged in these photos, so sad
