Take it easy guys, there was a guy named Zappa who was producing records when Pat was still in diapers. He did some amazing things with a synclavier you should be familiar with by now if your as hip as AmericanDiaz
Pat Metheny is without a doubt the musician with the highest level of knowledge and talent of our time. He is the greatest of this era. If the great master Yoda where a human and played the guitar, he would have an afro kind-of hair style :D
This is the first time I've seen this and what he did on this project. I have always believed Pat Metheny is a genius who writes the most beautiful music. BUT...I still love the songs and music he wrote and played with PAT METHENY GROUP and Pedro Aznar, Nando Lauria, Steve, Lyle and all the brilliant musicians he played with. Nothing like a bunch of talented men getting together to play with their hearts and passion into it. GOD BLESS YOU ALWAYS PAT.
For the interested, you can see many Orchestrians at the House On The Rock in Wisconsin. They truly are amazing. Makes me wonder if Pat has visited it.
If you look at these days, you can state that everything has been done and played with and about the guitar.
This attempt sounds like Pat Metheny's will to put the gap between him and the rest of all modern guitar players, saying: "I'm a top guitar player, but I'm also a complete musician, a mind devoted to the music, a genius".
Metheny can be all he wants: a real bebopper, a traditional jazz musician, a rocker, fusion, acoustic music...
@alexianblue Prople thought the same thing until EVH came along and revolutionized everything. Someone will come along and do it again, someone whose approach is totally different and slightly skewed that will make people say "why didn't I think of that?"
It's concerning that during these times of economic difficultly Pat is laying off musicians:-) Just kidding, he's a genius and one of my favorite guitarists.
He's on a whole other level most guys, even the other greats will never reach. Saw him in person on the Austin City Limits taping and it was like he was from another world.
The way jazz makes me feel takes me back to my childhood. It makes me think of Christmas time...(when I get to spend it with my family). Pat is just so amazing.
@jessfancher LOL Pat Metheny hasn't changed his hair in the last 30 years! He looks exactly the same, just a bit older, as he did when I saw him in concert back in 1980 in my student days.
@AgentZeroForTheWin This is a vision that was first introduced in the late 70"s but could not be done because of the lack of technology...Pat Metheny has a full orchestra and band, this is something he wanted to try once...It is not electric robot s**t, he's fullfilling a vision that once was deemed impossible...Do your research o this man before you pass judgement young one...
he controls other instruments thru a midi pickup? seems like hes brought a guitar synth to life. i dont hear any wind or brass instruments. I'll bet hes gonna find a way to get a sax in there somehow.
i love this mo fo since th first time i heard the first song by him have u heard and them through with jaco til seret story to all th albums but this is AMAZIN!!!!!!!!!AND M A GIRL I WISH TO C HIM LIVE ONCE IN MY LIFE!! GOD BLESS U AND YR T SHIRT WITH STRIPES!!!!
He's got it all. Magnificent playing, composing, concepts, nice guy,[ tons of hair], musical originality. Most jazzers are a bit out of the run of things; he's an icon. My favourite soloist on any instrument [tho' I'm a guitarist, I'm not biased]. His signature Ibanez guitars are excellent too.
@mayorc yes, i read a story in a jazz mag about it. And it was "an accident". :) In his town the only have this some sort of picks and he never learned to hold it the "right way" (ok, there is no right way) and he wanted to change his style at berklee but it was "too late". So he just played the way he played :) Also, there is no special technic :)
@InVINCEab13 wow, tell me, who do you listen to? this is by far the most impressive thing pat metheny has ever done. and metheny has accomplished a lot in music.
of all the metheny-tours the last 18 years I only missed the orchestrion concert 1 month ago in Cologne and I am still so angry that I missed it. Once again Pat showed with this project, that he is not only the best technical guitar player living, bus also the most creative musician i know (and this is not limited to jazz-music!). Hope he shares with us many more creative years!
Finally, I saw him in person, last Saturday in Berkeley, CA. It was wonderful, but definitely, I would have loved to hear him play my favorite of his, "Are You Going My Way?"

Really amazing...like the old steam fair music attractions we had in UK, takes me back to childhood. A visual treat as well as aural. Now, here's an idea how would this concept sit with Buckethead ???
Pat / Buckethead / Roborchestra .. the mind boggles...
As a musician in my headphones for about 30 years. Whenever I want to turn someone on to good guitar playing I always"entertain" them with Vai, Satriani and alike. If they're still following i move to Gambale like stuff which is where I am in my playing. Then if they're still hanging on I drop Metheny on them. I've lost MANY before this point. Maybe i need bigger circles, or maybe people that listen to metheny aren't big circle types.
I went to this concert at UNC last week. UNREAL! PHENOMENOL!!!! I've been a fan of Pat's for over 20 yrs....but to see him live, for the first time, and on this particular tour will be unforgettable. I really hope a Blu Ray DVD of this tour is released.

@InHomeGuitarLessons thats how he holds it. he talks a couple times in past interviews that when he was younger in his town they only had huge picks at the one music store they had. so growing up playing he learned to play like that also he plays it that way cause it mimicked the sound of wes montgomery's thumb on the strings.
he should explain what that thing is on top of his head, particularly which animal and if any cruelty was involved in getting it up there in which case they should call the peta people on him
Ive seen him yesterday in Valladolid (Spain) and he was excellent, i couldn't ever imagine something like that, its impossible to describe it, you jsuthave to see it.
I saw him recently live in concert Tivoli, Copenhagen, performing the entire new album which was great. He also talked about the project in a humorous way. Among other tunes performed were "Make Piece", "The Sound of Water" (piccasso guitar) (love the sound he get's on that guitar (as well as the synth guitar), "Antonia", ended with "Stranger In Town" and "Sueno con Mexico", in all a great great concert from a great man/musician.
Ah - now I know what the last tune was supposed to be. In London we didn't get to hear it because the orchestrion gave out. We got unaccompanied Phase Dance instead. And Sueno went wrong as well. Poor Pat.
He started the last tune with a riff that was doubled by the bass. He said 'something's not right', fiddled and tried again. Someone yelled 'turn it off and back on again,' but same result. So he played Phase Dance acapella. Then he started Sueno on the acoustic, creating a loop to play over, but this also cut out, so he did the tune just on the Ibanez.Pat remained gracious throughout but was clearly crestfallen. It later emerged (see Yahoo grp) it was his fault - user error.
The title track, Orchestrion is my all time favorite Pat Metheny Composition EVER! To think that this is 100% Metheny makes me so happy. He's mind blowing! I learned how to play that melody on the bells cuz I can't stop listening to this tune!
I'm a dedicated Pat Metheny fan and I love every record he has produced! Still I found it hard to think of this project as a great musical experience, but now, after I've heard this I have changed my mind completely! This is amazing! Can't wait until he's coming to Norway the 6. of February!
@KristianVangen This music is Magical! Orchestrion is right up there with with some all time Metheny favs. Facing West and Have You Heard are 2 of my favs!
Yeah I know! The more I listen, the better it gets. The concert was, as you said: "Magical"! Have You Heard, Understanding and Homecoming are my favorites! Any favorite on Orchestrion? :)
My Orchestrion CD arrived yesterday, and I've listened to it, but I think I'm going to reserve my opinion until I see him perform this live at the Walt Disney Concert hall.
Spirit of the Air is the tune I really want to hear live. I'm certain I won't be disappointed.
@taku221 AND it's all 100% Metheny compositions! And he plays everything in one way or another. Pat is on another level of operation. Just look at the guys drive, energy level. He's the Lance Armstrong of music.
Haven't we always known how brilliant this man is?

@KristianVangen This music is Magical! Orchestrion is right up there with with some all time Metheny favs. Facing West and Have You Heard are 2 of my favs!

Yeah I know! The more I listen, the better it gets. The concert was, as you said: "Magical"! Have You Heard, Understanding and Homecoming are my favorites! Any favorite on Orchestrion? :)

@KristianVangen I love the entire Orchestrion CD, but the title track, Orchestrion is my all time favorite!
