they cant use it at will, its like a defensive trigger, you have to threaten them. the rays at stingray have grown up with people, they feel no threat from us. i work with them every day, have trodden on dozens by accident and nothing. people will scream theyve been stung when they actually probably just stood on their back cause they have some sharp edges. if u were stung it would hurt like hell but its thoroughly treatable. irwin shouldnt have appraoched a wild bullray

WRONG! Rays barbs are very much like a tooth on their tail that is constantly being replaced. Rays in aquariums are not even clipped as they will just grow back let alone WILD ones depicted here. Check out my vids of my rays.

It is crazy! I just back from a cruise and I went scuba diving at Stingray City. we were surrounded by 15-20 stingray within 30 seconds of entering the water. I was actually bitten by one but that was a freak accident. You really can pet them and everything. NOTE: don't rub squid on you though...just not something you want to experience.

I was there before and swam with stingrays, and the barb doesnt cause any pain unless it strikes you. Also, the ones there (at stingray city, grand cayman) are quite tame after being around humans for decades. I witnessed a tour operator lift the stingrays tail out of the water and he just let the tail slip and the thing swam away.
