probably been stated prior to this comment, but the lyrics are quite a bit different from the studio version! i don't mind it one bit though. great song nonetheless
this tune is boss, my fave sabbath track, ozzy looks frazzled on this vid, he cant nod his head to the tune whatsoever but somehow manages to sing in time, epic
@symptom1555 actually, this was not from a week before paranoid was released. paranoid was released September 1970, and this was recorded at the Olympia Theatre, December 19, 1970. Also, on past lives, tracks on CD2: 1, and 5 through 9 were from this same venue on the same date
ozzy sure as hell didnt curse so much back than as he does now.....probably because he was wayyy to high to even wanna say anything....considering the fact that he most surely doesnt do all the stuff he did back then nowadays
I just won two tickets to see Ozzy Osbourne front row at Rogers Arena and I'm so happy about it. It will be a far out trip and a great opportunity to see him in his wonderful black sabbath clothes and to hear his beautiful voice and wow!!!
This is my favourite Sabbath tune. I love the Drum rhythm in this track it's bordering on Jazz at times. Sabbath may be Metal but this is quite progressive.
Great upload. This is what I grew up on, and folks wonder why I'm sometimes a morbid SOB lol.
Y'know? The thing about Sabbath is that they hit the pinnacle from the outset. They did not start out slow, evolve, then hit a shining point and do a fade out.
Nope, they came out of the gate burning like a supernova and just kept doing it until it burned em up. Good thing they've finally recovered this late in life and still show they have it now and then.

This is such a badass song ,how can you not relate,very suprised Ozzy has lived as long as he has,with all his darkness inside of him,great freakin music ,everything he's ever done is great.... :{
I still cant get over how awesome these guys sound live. I've listened to every Sabbath album at least a thousand times, and they sound even better live. Thats just fucking amazing.
Now that I've heard the awesomeness that is this song, I've decided that I'm only doing what Black Sabbath did in these days. In other words, I'm sticking to psychedelics.
Im MetallicA fan myself, but allways going back to sabbath when i feel nostalgic, even im not -70 guy, but still Black Sabbath is the one who start the metal
this couldn't have been a week before the release of paranoid....Ozzy altered the lyrics for the album well before a week of its release................
@yousaiditzero Actually, it WAS from a week before paranoid. Do a little research on Sabbath. Ozzy frequently changed lyrics, quite often. If you have no access to bootlegs, Then get the official live release "Past Lives." He alters the words to many songs, some making the lyrics 100% different. Hand of doom is on there, from a 1975 performance, 5 years AFTER paranoid with all diff. lyrics. I know what I am talking about. There is not much about Sabbath that I don't know.
@DoomMetalSludge Don't take my word for it, get a retail copy of past lives....look at the notes and dates under hand of doom. That particular performance on that disc is from 75...
@symptom1555 I actually own that, and your wrong. Tracks 1-9 were recorded at Hardrock in Manchester, England on March 11th, 1973, and at the Rainbow Theatre in London, England on March 16th, 1973. On CD two, tracks 2-4 were recorded at Asbury Park Convention Hall in Asbury Park, New Jersey on August 6th, 1975. Tracks 5-9 were recorded at the Olympia Theatre in Paris, France on December 20th, 1970 as well as track on on the second disc. Hand of Doom is from this 1970 show.
@symptom1555 That Hand Of Doom version is from this....The songs on Past Lives; Symptom of the Universe, Hole In The Sky and Megalomania are from the Asbury Park 1975 which is the Sabotage tour,
Iron Man, Paranoid, Hand of Doom (is there any more?) are from this concert, it's just a compliation of the songs, i which they just released the Asbury Park show 75' although you can find it everywhere on the internet and YouTube, they should've released officially.....
@SgtBustahnutt I never thought of t that way. I know Geezer wrote most of the lyrics, but I always thought(especially since Ozzy did this in his solo career as well) That he was just so high he improvised the lyrics when he couldn't remember. I know he uses teleprompter nowadays.
@symptom1555 I agree, Ozzy for the most part I believe has lyrics, within the song he keeps, but sometimes I think he will make an adlib, depending on where he is playing, if it has to be similar to the album or a jam. That is one of the things I think makes Sabbath unique!
@symptom1555 I thought the lyrics to war pigs on this live version were so much better than the album version and what's the deal with the ending to war pigs on the album version? I found it to be ridiculous. Whats your opinion?
@symptom1555 Symptom, that version of Hand of Doom on Past Lives is the same as this one. The Past Lives mixed the '70 Paris performance with the '75 King Biscuit ones. But of course you knew that as you know everything about Sabbath...
@symptom1555 your right, also on the album "the ozzman cometh" it has war pigs and black sabbath basement tapes and war pigs has 100% different lyrics. sometimes i like listening to that version just to change things up(also to here Iommi do some cool live solos)
@yousaiditzero well,if he altered the lyrics well before a week, and that was a week ago then that makes perfect to me that that was a week before paranoids release and plus who cares just enjoy the fuckin music!
check out Bill Ward...He beats that little ludwig 5 piece with tribal ferocity...with Geezer matching with perfect rhythm....This is why I think no other incarnation of Sabbath sounded quite as raw, and powerful....the right musicians in the right combination at the right time.....(of course we have to give props and respect to their 5th member...all hardcore Sabbath fans know what I am talking about)
@iHards what the hell is that supposed to mean? I am well aware of the influence Sabbath has had, they were my first concert in 1978 on the never say die tour. If this wasn't an insult, then my apologies. I am not quite understanding the dro out of life with bong in hand comment.
@symptom1555 Haha, no man, not an insult at all. It`s a quote from Sleep`s "Dopesmoker" - Drop out of life with bong in hand, Follow the smoke towards the riff-filled land! I assumed, that the 5th member, you mentioned, was weed. Sorry, if that`s not the case. What i meant to say with my comment was, that Sabbath didn`t just help define a genre in music, they difend a new way of life - one, that countless psychedelic/doom/rock/metal bands have since adopted. Hail the sweet leaf, Hail Sabbath!
@iHards ah, ok...sorry i have my shre of idiots going off on me out of the clear blue, and it has left me baffled. No, the 5th member is the invisible mystical member (their words) also referred to as the spiritual member who was responsible for the music. Confused? lol...the way the whole band describes it is that the first three albums wrote themselves, they would pick up there intruments and they would jam out the songs first time around. (continued on nxt message, running out of words)
@iHards@iHards Ok second part...any way...the first album? Black Sabbath? played in the studio live, all recorded in one take. The band after noticing this somewhere around "Master of reality" began to nervously joke about the invisible spiritual member who was writing their music....lol. Got to the point where if (during rehersals) the jams just wernt coming together, they said they would stop and wait until they all agreed the "5th member had arrived
es increíble que esto se haya hecho en 1970! Milnovescientosetenta!!! prácticamente al final de los sesentas ya se habían creado casi todos los géneros que definirían al rock de las siguientes décadas.
One of the things that defined 70s hard rock, metal and prog rock was song structure. The changes were more like mini versions of the movements found in classical music. That's what made Sabbath so interesting. Extended changes, with different tempos or even different musical styles, made it sound like they were playing three different movements. Sometimes, one of their little changes was better than the main verse and it would sort of steal the whole song in 60 seconds
Ozzy is so loaded here. He gets the lyrics wrong. Still cool stuff. You can tell they didn't have those onstage tuners that bands have today. Check out Tony tuning up out loud. That never happens today with professional musicians, but 1970 technology was much more limited. The sound is cool, but I prefer the studio version especially with the more powerful lyrics.
Got this song is epic. It is really Complex but it flows perfectly, This is what most musicians wish they could do but they can't so we just get more pop songs. Long live Sabbath.
True, they are all intoxicants, but most people in the world do something to intoxicate themselves every now and then. Heroin is dangerously addictive, and destructive, Marijuana is not destructive, and only as addictive as coffee. I can go for weeks without in between periods of smoking weed every day with no withdrawl symptoms at all. Booze and Acid are dangerous, and addictive, too, but they are not nearly as dangerous as Heroin, Heroin is one of the worst drugs available.
@suicidewillie Ozzy did, but I know Tony Iommi didn't, he just got into coke real bad. I'm not sure about Geezer and Bill... And weed isn't an intoxicant, because the word "intoxicant" comes from the word "toxic", as if you have too much of an intoxicant, it can be toxic. Marijuana is impossible to overdose on, so a better word for it is: Consciousness alterer.
wow this song is so fucking well structured, love it, they are all REAL MUSICIANS, not like most bands nowadays that only have one really good musician in the band and everyone else follows them, SABBATH!!
i guess my years have me jaded, and since every hard rock band today is called metal, im just gonna have to say sabbath gave the world a rule book and told bands to go at it. sabbath has something damn near every band since has somehow ignored, and it is one of the most important aspects of metal.
its called "melody"
tony pulled off with 1 guitar what most bands miss with two.
duhn, dunh, dunh, dunh, dunh, DUNH! does not make it metal. learn your instrument.

es increíble que esto se haya hecho en 1970! Milnovescientosetenta!!! prácticamente al final de los sesentas ya se habían creado casi todos los géneros que definirían al rock de las siguientes décadas.

WOW that is a YOUNG Ozzy. One of my favorite songs by one of my favorite bands. (∩_∩)
JohnGalt42088 1 year ago
One of the things that defined 70s hard rock, metal and prog rock was song structure. The changes were more like mini versions of the movements found in classical music. That's what made Sabbath so interesting. Extended changes, with different tempos or even different musical styles, made it sound like they were playing three different movements. Sometimes, one of their little changes was better than the main verse and it would sort of steal the whole song in 60 seconds

Ozzy's drunk lyrics are so funny "because you trip a lot" lol.
mikexlong 1 year ago
for a perfect example of the word "juxtaposition"
look up "the candy song", by "masters of reality"
sounds 100% nothing like black sabbath, but i dare you to miss the groove.
its like metal-dy, i mean melody.
its all dropped d =tuning, but the riff will fuck ya up.
not metal, in the strictest sense, but better than priest, say

This is before any of these guys were big... that's pretty goddamn hard to imagine now lol

Classic Doom Metal people!!!!! It doesn't get any better than this.

You're having a good time baby, but that won't last
Your mind's all full of things, you're living too fast
Go out enjoy yourself, don't bottle it in
You need someone to help you stick the needle in, yeah

Got this song is epic. It is really Complex but it flows perfectly, This is what most musicians wish they could do but they can't so we just get more pop songs. Long live Sabbath.
JASONX410 2 years ago 2
its so cool that they did a anti-drug song when they all did drugs anyway :)
Angelious0 2 years ago
@Angelious0 lol well it was anti heroin....i think when they came to america, it ruined them.
beserker1912 2 years ago 2
It's a song about HEROIN... and at this stage, all of the members of Sabbath only drank, smoked dope, and did acid... and in the late 70's-- cocaine.
69ofdoom 2 years ago
@69ofdoom but then again who r they 2 make a anti drug song when they did drugs anyway heroin weed acid its still all drugs anyway
Angelious0 2 years ago
True, they are all intoxicants, but most people in the world do something to intoxicate themselves every now and then. Heroin is dangerously addictive, and destructive, Marijuana is not destructive, and only as addictive as coffee. I can go for weeks without in between periods of smoking weed every day with no withdrawl symptoms at all. Booze and Acid are dangerous, and addictive, too, but they are not nearly as dangerous as Heroin, Heroin is one of the worst drugs available.
69ofdoom 2 years ago
@69ofdoom They probably done a bit of smack too.
suicidewillie 1 year ago
@suicidewillie Ozzy did, but I know Tony Iommi didn't, he just got into coke real bad. I'm not sure about Geezer and Bill... And weed isn't an intoxicant, because the word "intoxicant" comes from the word "toxic", as if you have too much of an intoxicant, it can be toxic. Marijuana is impossible to overdose on, so a better word for it is: Consciousness alterer.

Black Sabbath - not only my favorite band, the best band ever!!!
NicholasMagoon 2 years ago 7
i guess my years have me jaded, and since every hard rock band today is called metal, im just gonna have to say sabbath gave the world a rule book and told bands to go at it. sabbath has something damn near every band since has somehow ignored, and it is one of the most important aspects of metal.
its called "melody"
tony pulled off with 1 guitar what most bands miss with two.
duhn, dunh, dunh, dunh, dunh, DUNH! does not make it metal. learn your instrument.

LOL...love this comment...couldn't agree with you more....
