  • classic soul slow jam

  • This is a beautiful song.

  • They played this in the grocery store today, forgot all bout this song

  • Wow, some idiots were born on the week this song was number 1, sad. I'm younger than you lot, but I appreciate amazing soul and R&B when I hear it. By the way, MY birth week had Mariah's Fantasy as number 1, so appreciate this.

  • I love this song although it makes me sad.

  • yea this number one song when i was born!!

  • 213REALKA, put your head back in the sand, your butt looks better.

  • THAT DUDE REMINDS ME OF BIGFOOT

  • Rebecca Black's Friday is better than this....

  • This was number 1? WTF

  • When I saw my birthweek song was "On My Own" I thought it was the Whitesnake song.

    =(

  • Number one song when I was born and it's LAME.

  • The lyrics in this . . . . heartbreaker . . . don't get this with today's music. Sadly.

  • such a beautiful song..........can never die

  • sadly for the song, some idiots were born that week.

  • love this song some of you guys dont know what real music is. the music today sucks.

  • Is there a male cover of this song? my cousin want me to find it.. any help...?

  • @nobleminstrel I don't think so. This was Patti's song. She needed a duet partner to complete it and chose Michael McDonald. Here is a bit of trivia re this song. The two of them sang their parts on both sides of the country. If memory serves, Patti did her part in NYC and Mr. McDonald his part in California. The song was mixed and this was the result. The first time they met was on the Johnny Carson show where they sang it together for the first time live.

  • @itsmegp46 i see... thank you!

  • @itsmegp46 Actually I heard on America's Top 40 that they never met to record neither the song nor to tape the video !!! You couldn't tell, this if you didn't hear this comment by Casey Kasem !!!

  • @ludan68 I already said that. They recorded the song on opposite sides of the country. Then the song was released as a single, became a #1 hit. THEN the two of them sang the song LIVE on the Johnny Carson's Tonight Show many years ago. This was way before Jay Leno.

  • After a 30 yr marrage it wasn't suppose to end this way, wish now it had'nt have ended at all. Great and true song.

  • 29/6/1986

  • Im not feeling the song either but kinda pretty cool half the posters here arent only my age but also was born on the same as me!

  • O que é bom deve ser publicado!!!

  • A Facebook app brought me here,

  • Una maravillosa cancion

  • Can that white boy sing or what?

  • @vanessa4u4evr hell yeah

  • @vanessa4u4evr The Doobie Brothers forever!

  • Sad but beautiful song. The lyrics tell a story familiar to many of us.

  • People have different tastes and this is partly why life can be so very interesting and not routine, predictable and boring. This is a fine song and especially so for those who have lived through something and can relate to the lyrics. I love this performance by these two fine artists, even if it goes back more than 20 years. At various periods in my life "On My Own" has had a particular meaning to me. I have been there, so I know and understand.

  • And, lets not forget this is 1986

  • 2 of the greatest voices in music

  • brilliant track, i love it anyway

  • Even if I don't want I have to get used to this song... it was the number one on my birthday... so it's historic, and Patti really has a nice voice... ;)

  • 111 people have no soul

  • hahah q bn!

  • wtf? the song of my birthday sucks :P

  • @AnaJu86 Ha this was my birthday number one as well. Patti LaBelle and Michael McDonald both have great songs. This is not one of them. Also, three points for guessing which video editing effect started getting put into prosumer mixers in the mid-80s? If you guessed split screen, you'd be right. Unfortunately

  • I just love his hair...and gosh what a voice - one of those unchanging ones. Much love.

  • Sadly this was the number 1 song when I was born..

I was hoping it would be metal...

  • @LordBoaZ haha, no shit...well, there's 2 of us now :D

  • @LordBoaZ same disappointment...

  • @LordBoaZ

Exactly the same goes for me, same date of birth nr.1.. <_<.. and was hoping it to be atleast rock :D..

  • Same here..

  • @LordBoaZ so the ones we born on that week are screwed :/

  • @LordBoaZ least you were born with a classic and you dont appreciate it

  • @LordBoaZ Me too!! xDD

  • @LordBoaZ: What a dumb comment, I'm sorry, now go away! Love, love, love this song. And no, there is no freedom of speech! You MUST love this song, too!!! ;-)

  • @LordBoaZ You should be so lucky LordBoaz.

  • @LordBoaZ In the U.K., the only heavy metal Number 1 (ever!) was 'Bring Your Daughter...to the Slaughter', by Iron Maiden in 1990 (amazing band, decent song, but not their finest work)

  • @LordBoaZ same reason I've got here :D

  • @LordBoaZ its a great song

  • @LordBoaZ You and me both! lol

  • @LordBoaZ you're lucky, this song was so awesome when it came out- ask anyone who grew up in the '80's!

  • i use to have hair like that then i took an arrow in the knee.

  • Michael McDonald did so many duets, he was like the Timbaland of the Eighties. Except, instead of Timbaland's groans, McDonald actually sings.

  • Touches the soul to the core. Beautiful.

  • Patti LaBelle + Michael McDonald= Great Duet

  • this came out when the old man had to play, needless to say, we waited to unhappy kid's and no home. but he came home... and I married the fool, a year later(yes we had 2 kids and living in s--.. 23 years later I got rid of the fool:) so happy now

  • Mine to

  • Song of my birth week :)

  • @wwstiger me too!!! lol

  • classic song !!!

  • There will never be another song like this.

  • so corny but yet so true

  • goose bumps...this is beyond words!!

  • Thats Kenny Rogers!!!

  • That´s music is perfect! Pretty!!!

  • " Patti Labelle voice´s is amazing!!! " Hey baby, my nose is getting big

I noticed it be growing when I been telling

them fibs...I admit that I have been a little immature, but I really think you oughta know the truth: the Patti Labelle voice´s is very ungly for me.

  • I disapprove!

  • Afro.

  • What a great sound. It reminds me what I dont want to lose. My Cat....

  • this is what you call music, people with passion, better than the shit bastard music of today. no wonder there's a high rate of suicide these days. we need the 80s and 90s back.

  • @TheMUZY786 lol "shit bastard music" could'nt have put it better myself.

  • @carolinaambary LOL you sound like a hater with your very uncommon opinion. You've said the same thing like three times give it a rest....let's hear how you sound.

  • I can not give up, will continue to wait.

  • nice

  • omg those hairstyles!! do you think that volume is full of talent or aqua net?

  • I sent this to my husband who walked out on his responsibilities. I am done, it is time to move on

  • @jotn54 good for you you dont need that in your life and God doesnt pay back in money!!!!!! you need a man not a boy

  • go ! rochelle remember me everybody hates crhis

  • This ain't the 60's or 70's. It seems like a man is judged by what he has in his bank account other than his character and his potential. The looks come last. Wich is very sad.

  • My advice to all my heart broken fellas out there.... Forget about making a woman happy and focus on making your money... Then I swear to god you can have your pick. These days the only way to get the woman of your dreams is to buy them.

  • @FRESHCOOLAIDE preach..

  • What two amazing voices!

  • Awesomeness. I still remember hearing this when I was a kid.

  • Just lean back and enjoy. wow. What two people can do with the talents. Classy, timeless. Wish they would get other songs to record like this. This will be a classic!! Great easy listening. Close Your eyes and just enjoy!

  • @discounttalkau What about Lady Gaga?

  • I remember always singing this song when I was a kid. I didn't know what they were talking about at the time, but I loved their voices together. This is one of the greatest break-up songs ever.

  • Great song and video!

My wife says that I look like Michael McDonald, I told her; he looks like me! lol

  • two great voices together as one!

  • Michael McDonald has a really strong voice. ~

  • Josh Krajcik sounds a lot like Michael McDonald.

  • @jaydiarae He should change his first name to Michael, cause I think he sounds like Michael Bolton, but as you mentioned it I realise he is a cobination of the two.

  • This sokg was one of the best ballds from the year 1986 in my opinion. I true loved it and still do! They are truly a dynamic couple in this moving duet. Thanks for uploading it here!

  • this would have got 50 million views if only he would do the family guy cut of him sneezing.

  • Losing you it cut like a knife, you walked out and so did my life- Man I love that line.

  • I love this song!!!

  • Sent shivers up my spine seeing the WTC towers again.

  • Classic.

  • Michael McDonald is the baddest singing white man ever. what a voice

  • @leongibson1210 I know that's right! :) Truer words have never been spoken.

  • And I pity the next generation of people growing up who listen to the rubbish on the airwaves today, when they have no idea of the truly creative people like those who made music like this.....

  • @discounttalkau speak for yourself i listen to this kind of music and im what you consider to be the next generation, patti labelle is one of my favourite singers, shes probably among some of the best singers in the world

  • @discounttalkau And I pity the close-minded generation before mine that cant appreciate that some people have different tastes for different reasons.

  • Just beautiful !

  • we need captions for what michael mcdonald is singing lol

  • One of the best ever recorded.

  • Constant adds before a song. Kills the mood bitches.

  • People dislike this song because they dont know what real music is anymore and they're screwed by the computermusic from now.

  • @blobbernize Dont be so elitist

  • Actually what i dislike more than the people who click dislike classic songs and videos are the evil devilsh sickening greedy overcommercialization on You Tube before the Videos start like from VEVO and Others.

  • One of the few songs in 1986 I actually liked. By that time I started hating the direction music was going like the early Rap and Hip Hop crap by the mid 1980s.

  • MICHAEL IS MY TYPE OF GUY

  • I was about 22 years old when this song came out. Both awesome artist's in their own right. Very powerful lyrics and ballad. The verse "Now we're out there talking divorce, and we weren't even married" If that don't hit you hard in the face, nothing will.

  • I remember listening to this song when I was a child. This song is too sad and emotional. I tend to think about said things that have occurred in my life. I used to feel like crying when listening to this song. This song is unfair.

  • UFO over Patti's head/hair on 0:11 ;)

  • This song represents a perfect example of how two voices can harmonize to produce what is simply one spectacular recording.

  • Michael McDonald's voice is very powerful. What a Great tune. Feeling nostalgic now.

  • I really love this song 'cause I'd started learning English to understand its lyric around 30 yrs ago.

  • just heard this on pandora and had to add this to my favs. ahh! i love this song.

  • listen to the song and enjoy and keep your dumb ass remarks to yourself !!!!!!

  • tHANK u pATTY mIKE SO FLOFFY.......

  • Anybody else just want to run their fingers thru his hair??? Yummy!

  • wow. not everyone is gonna like the songs u like. #chilldafkout

  • "On my Own" is what that last animal sang when patti mowed down every animal in the forest to make that fur coat. I love her because she knows she is the only one who can get away with that mess.

  • Ms. LaBelle and Mr. McDonald!! Lord have Mercy!! True Gold!

  • i love this song

  • To all you Atlanta Braves fans (like myself): This was the #1 song in the USA when Jason Rice came into the world (May 13, 1986.

  • true classic, brings the old days flooding back, great memories.

  • What movie was this song on

  • @bayharbor850 None

  • Pattil the and micheal rock this.

  • i like when people get mad over someone elses dislike

  • POWERFUL SONG. TWO AMAZING ARTIST. GREAT DUO

  • Michael kind of sounds like Luther and Gerald Levert. Wow! I like his voice. This is a great duet.

  • I BELIEVE Patti can actually be heard from one coast to the other.

  • EPIC!

  • Who in there right f'n mind could dislike this song?
