Any of the extra instruments that people think they're hearing are a side effect of using a slide with high distortion. As you're playing and going a little crazy, your slide touches strings that you don't mean it to and it sets them off in the background. Kind of like white noise.... White noise that's saturated with sexy..... Jack "White Noise"...hmm was that too much?
I'm pretty sure this could definitely be the live version, I don't think there's a bassist in the background, even during the distorted bits, Jack's just using his Big Muff distortion pedal, a MUST for anyone who wants to sound like this.
i love this song, both in its original robert johnson format, and the white stripes take on it. the whole song is great, but from 3:08 - 4:17 .... epic fucking rock and roll guitar god just going apeshit. when the ancients first built their early, primitive versions of a guitar, this is the sound they were hoping would some day be achieved. then when he slows it down like it's going to end with the typical blues outro, 4:50 he eargasmically steals your soul ... and you love it
@plumbercorey uh dude what are you talking about? He uses a Fender Twin Reverb amp along with his two silvertones. I'm pretty sure that's called using Fender equipment.
@timtomin Bad ampage? People kill for that sound. It's so broken up. If you played acoustic with him, just sittin down, you totally think differently. You'd say something like, "Holy shit. He's good."
you struggle along in your life and then you find something that makes you feel as good as a little kid getting a big beautiful lollipop - thanks Jack and Meg - its a nice present to get to hear your musical lollipop. Tasty.
@jaggerlags HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! you clearly have not heard enough white stripes to even realize what you're saying is sooooo out of the intelligent world.
@ericevans93 Yeah RJ would get it, love it, be right there with it. You know he would. I guess you can do the "music critique" thing but it sure ain't about that ....shit man can't you feel that!? ... don't that send a chill down your spine, no? .... get a defibrillator on your heart right away cause you just about dead .... rebel tonally my ass .... who cares ...

This is recording made at the BBC studios and is not live. Would be cool if it was, but there are guitar overdubs there. I think there is a bass too, but i could be wrong. I fucking love this recording.
Seriously, though, any old bunch of morons can turn their amps up to 10 (or 11, which is one louder), but how many people can sound like the White Stripes? Anyone?
I disagree. It's about the 'Stripes stripped down sound, or Clapton and his more produced sound. I like the stripped down 'Stripes way better. This is of course merely an opinion.

yeah it just fit better with the album. Who knows if this version was even in jack's mind back then. I agree, this version is better. Not taking away from the other one, which is righteous.
Amazing version of the song. If you fancy a wee play, stick your guitar in open E tuning, get a slide and go nuts ;) Oh I would also recommend an acoustic as it sounds fabbydoo :D
I like Jack better, too, but I don't know about the humility thing. I pretty much think that when someone else tells me they want me to be humble it's just code for "stop being better than me" and telling me about it. Humility is for altruists and people who believe in human sacrifice. No thanks.
This is the best version of this song ever recorded, and they did it live on the radio! Jack is a genius and Meg drums with innocent primal power. It's like going to church without all the crosses.
is there a way for u to offer the audio for this video as an mp3. i am doing a project on robert johnson who wrote this song and i would love to include this version of the song
some asshole said John Mayer was better that Jack White on another video. My point here is that video shows how talented Jack is. He one of the best if not the best modern guitar player. It doesn't mater what style Blues, Rock, Metal, Shred or what ever. He is beter than John Mayer! I kinda came out of nowhere with that but of well its not opinion its fact.
They could re-make all their songs and they would no doubt be twice as great, oranges and apples!
