Often, they faced the corner of two walls to bounce the sound back to the mics, so that it would have some texture to it. A reverb effect.

Well,So Far as i know robert johnson recorded in the corner because he don't want nobody to see him how he was playing,he don't want the recording people to see his incredible liks,afraid of anybody copy his style of playing.
