I remember this well. Firstly, it wasn't a firework factory, it was a firework storage facility. Secondly, some here are asking why they built this in a "residential area". Well it was actually the other way about; the storage facility came first, it had been there for years, and when it was first built it was more or less in an industrial area, removed from nearby housing. But as the years went by, the town expanded, and housing was built closer and closer (as happens in any growing town/city).

Rumors are that someone that worked there dropped a sigaret on the ground somewhere which lighted all the fireworks.

After this disaster happend the Dutch government put up new strict rules about keeping fireworks.
