To answer your question, no, they don't have any direct impact on your character. They are simply a cool aspect of the lore side of Guild Wars, and represent certain professions. Lyssa = Mesmers, Balthazar = Warriors, and so on.
And don't worry I'm a Guild Wars noob myself, but Xoll has been schooling me so I'm getting there. =)
Considering Lyssa is a goddess and we do not have a mesmer proffession, are you almost certain that the last proffession we have to find out is a Mesmer? Kinda bummed they wont have the Ritualist return...
@WizkidSnipes Lyssa being the goddess of the mesmers does just reinforce the thought of the mesmer returning! So yeah it's pretty well certain! I would love to be pleasantly surprised but....

@bencsk8r that's quite the compliment thank you! But yes! We are SO stoked about this game! There is really no MMO out there right now or that has been announced that is of this caliber. The only thing that is, is EVE online but that isn't very user friendly =P
