Can domestic ducks fly? Usually on farms they clip the wings but yours looked like they had large wings so I was wondering if they are capable of flight, but just choose to stay put.
@keithp They are capable of flight. I clip them usually. Now I don't have to because we built an aviary for them. It's nice to see them fly but they prefer to walk around.
@NykaAriadne Thanks! She's still my most spoiled little hen. We had that bonding time when she was born the same day I had surgery on my arm. I got to spend my time on leave playing with her and filming her.
WONDERFUL video! I LOVE Ducks, and farm animals in general. I helped to raise a Goose from 3 days old til 6 months. I was shocked at how big its feet were at 3 days old!!!! I found your channel through jxh0703 and the tree peas in a pod video. I look forward to watching your videos. Thank you for sharing.
@chihuahuabulldog Thank you! Welcome to my channel! I love geese. Never kept one as a pet. I bet they have big feet. That's one of my favorite things besides how fluffy baby ducks are. Their big feet and when they fall asleep all stretched out. too cute!
@1TomAhs1 I had ulnar nerve surgery in 2007. Wilma was born the day of my surgery which meant that I was off work the entire time she grew up and I had the camera on her constantly! :)
Wilma is a cute duckling that becomes a grown up duck. Loopy has a loud quack when little Wilma is trying to get out of the large tub of water. I can hear a Drake's quack in the background. The bills on a call duck are shorter than that of the regular sized ducks.
@kd4adv Thanks for loving this video too. Wilma is quite the grown up duck now. I wish I had posted it in HD but youtube did not have that feature yet. sigh...
Okay thanks I just bought my first batch of ducklings (about 7 or 8 hens and a drake) so I am just waiting for them to start laying! Right now most are 12 days old, and 2 are about 5 days old. Very cute babies
I recently got a new duck because my old one had passed away. This new duck doesnt like to be touched. I spend about 20-25 minites with her everyday and handfeed her tomatoes but thats as close as she gets whenever i try to touch her she freaks and runs she wont even step to close she has a very happy envirment outside and is a only duck, which is sad. But, how can I get her to not be afraid of me and make her let me pet her. Every time I even try and catch her she runs. But she does follow me.
@berrykari I give frozen (thawed) peas as a treat. I also dig worms out of the compost to feed them. They love it. None of my ducks are as tame as Wilma. I was on vacation for the first weeks of her life and she is never afraid of me. That being said, I cannot just go and pick her up. I have to let her climb in my lap when I have treats. Also, the less time you spend with them or the more time you spend chasing them, the more wary they get.
I Love ducklings. I used to have one and it would always follow us haha. then it grew like 15x bigger and we couldnt take care of it anymore so we let it go into a lake with other ducks. it was the biggest there with white feathers but for some reason lost its quack. you could only hear a blow from the nose D:
Boombella, I'm not sure if we should chip our duck's wings when we get them. i don't want me duck to fly away. Should we? We didn't clip our chickens'.
You should clip the flight feathers of one wing only. It's enough to keep them close until they learn where home is. Unless they are in an aviary and then you won't need to clip. The feathers grow back after each molt so you can decide then if you need to do it again.
Do you clip their wings? I always wanted call ducks, but I heard that they are very loud and can fly quite well. I bought Cayuga's and Khaki Campbell's instead.
Yes, the hens are loud. Since they are in an aviary I'm letting the wings grow out. It's fun to see them fly. Not fun when they don't want to go to bed in their house.
no ducks lay eggs regardless of males present or not, thats why my mom got mad when i got some males for my females, they sat on their eggs to hatch them and they stopped laying more for a while
duck eggs have a richer yolk as well, fried duck eggs are so good, me and my mom both prefer duck to chicken eggs thats why she use to get mad when id let them sit on their eggs because they stop laying for a while when they sit on them
Great video. My parents had a pair of call ducks that lived for 12 years each. They died of natural causes within 6 months of each other. I can't tell you about the joy they brought to our lives. Best pets ever.
They grow large way too fast! Yes they are less tame as they get older unless you spend time with them every day. Mine get more tame the more I spend with them. Unfortunately, I don't see them enough.
Wilma is tame because she had me with her every day spoiling her with peas and worms. It's hard to do it if you can't be with them every day. I have to tackle her sometimes but then she calms down in my lap and eats her treats. I don't spoil her every day like I used to. Now we have three new babies stealing the attention.
I had to raise two ducklings this summer for the first time and they are a lot more work than I thought it would be. Lovely film. Ive been thinking about getting a couple of ducks but not sure what the neighbours would think of the noise. Do you know of any other small ducks which are less noisy than calls but still have an amusing disposition? Thanks.
I don't know all duck breeds but I doubt you could get a duckling that doesn't make a lot of noise. The only thing that I found with ducklings is they are very messy (I mean poop and food everywhere)and they cheap like crazy when you step out of the room for even a few minutes. But if you can deal with that then go for it, I hope to never have to raise ducks again, I only did it cuz they were abandoned.
We bought some and have raised their babies every year. It takes a little work to keep ducks but they are great pets. you want to have a safe house for them.
I got the idea from another youtube user and it was a winner. I should have known though because my ducks will devour the pea plants that I try to grow in my garden. I have to protect them.
Thanks for your kind comments. I've been swamped lately but will probably post a little more video of this year's baby, Junebug. She's starting to feather but still very 'baby' You can see Wilma again in the 'What Makes You Happy' video. I've got her very tame with the use of those peas!
We are working on a solution. Right now, they get supervised outings. They have a 4X12 foot run attached to their house but they want to go out and forage. We would love to put a lid over out whole garden but have not figured out how to do it.
We are pretty vigilant while out there. The hawks will come check them out and that's when we herd them back into the run. If I was at one end of the garden and the ducks on the other, I don't think I could keep a hawk from grabbing one. Listen to the crows and bluejays if they live near you. They will sound the alarm more times than not and even chase hawks away. Saw some of the vids, your going to have quite a flock! :)
yeah i have seen crows chasing them before here i was surprised but yeah i started out with 20 calls i gave three away and 5 died:( i wanted just like five but i guess i will have to keep 9 oh boy im uploading a vid here in a sec of them outside just look over dad lol he's crazy
They are mostly mixed. There is a white call and the baby is chocolate but she has a little white on her neck. I don't think I have any pure colors. Let me know if you have any ideas!

Interesting, we notice that Loopy gets the cold shoulder from the ducks in the flock during a certain part of the year. They practically chase her back inside the house. I'm not sure what it means. Oh and Caboose will drop her load anywhere! LOL even in her swimming pool.

Wilma looked so comfortable as a baby. You guys took great care of her:)So cute watching Wilma rest on her moms back. This looks like so much fun to be able to care for these ducks. They are SO cute!! What a wonderful video to watch.
Wilma is soooo cute! Watching her be loved, grow, learn "duck" things, etc., I thoroughly enjoyed the video, plus Louie (my African Texas Grey) started making duck sounds while watching with me! Some of the duck noises even sounded like laughter. :-)
I agree! I sometimes imagine a group of grandmas sitting around a table playing cards and cackling with laughter when all the hens go quacky. Thanks for the visit and comment!
Thank you! It was fun to film her every other day or so. She changed so much in 2 months!
