  • This game is epic beyond comprehension

  • 5 people promised to take Mary there again someday...but they never did!!!!! :D

  • Truly the most heart wrenching cut scene of the game, possibly of any game...

  • Quite a bit of inspiration from the movie 'Lost Highway' in this game.

  • i bet if a monster came through the door while he was sad he would kill it with 2 fingers

  • This is probably my favorite scene in video game history. Put the cutscene with some nice music and you got yourself a great cutscene.

  • One of the greatest scene in gaming.

  • james only killed mary to stop her suffering. a mercy killing. he loved her and feels awful and guilty about it.

  • @SilentHillEmzie But he also did it because he wanted his life back and Mary was a burden on him. He says it in the last cut scene.

  • @KedViper Oh yeah! How could i have forgotten!!!!! *hits self on head with blue folder near laptop*

  • The way James takes the news...

I feel that in cases like this, and only this are the times Murderers should be shown partial mercy.

When they plead for death for their actions, let them live..

  • After I saw that, I'd probably be suicidal D:

If it wasn't for Laura, that is.

  • So in this game the town is in actual fact good and not evil like the previous installment. This game's town makes ppl confront their darkest and most repressed memories to make them stronger and move on. But this game also shows that some ppl can never get over what happened to them and allow it to consume them until their dying day. For example, Eddie and Angela could not get over wat happened and this led to their demise.

James was strong confronted these memories and moved on. Helpful town.

  • This guy then search for his dead wife but in reality he's in Silent Hill to confront his sins, to forgive himself and to move on in life, In other word, James is a redemptionnist and that's y i support the "leave ending" cuz he overcome his past, his sins, make peace with his wife and himself, and maybe would adopt Laura thank to Mary's wish

  • Wow some ppl are cold here. Listen, James is human and every human commit at the least a sin in their life. Well he didn't kill his wife because she "hated" her or by bloodlust but to end her suffering. Well he did feels very guilty and miserable after this, therefore he's not happy for his deed and ppl who said that he's a bad man or a murder, they're jus so wrong.... he would be a bad man if he doesn't ressent any guilt which in the case is not true here

  • @madlolchuck I wanna point something out in the "every human commits... a sin in their life" sentence. The ppl who believe they are better than James and are proud that they didn't commit a sin yet... are sinning. Pride is one of the 7 deadly sins.

  • Looks like James is into making snuff films.

  • WHERE IS EVERYONE!

  • ...Why was he filming himself killing her -_-?

  • @Slightlybaka I sincerely doubt he did that, especially since he left the tape in Silent Hill before Mary fell ill enough to be bedridden. Perhaps it was James's memory that popped up while watching the video, or something that Silent Hill itself brought to him, but the series of events say James didn't tape it.

  • @Strawbellies I was pretty much joking in the context that James does some pretty odd things. I think it's just his suppressed memories returning to him.

  • @Slightlybaka James and bloody toilets.

  • @Strawbellies Exactly.

  • the song is calling true by akira yamaoka

  • 2:54 Max Steel

  • I love how 4:51 is seen earlier in the apartments as a foreshadowing...

  • No games have the immersion that SH2 had, I've never felt so connected to a character in a video game, it truly tears down the fourth wall and sucks you straight in to the story. Games like this are of a dead breed and it's a crying shame.

  • Truly one of the most emotional scenes in a video game you will ever encounter. I cried the first time I watched this scene quite a bit and even now, 10 years later, it gets me almost every time. It's a shame so few games these days pull at your emotional strings these days let alone have stories this deep. I advise anyone who has never played this game to play it. You will undoubtedly be richer for the experience

  • @auron508, couldn't agree with you more. If only more games were like this. I've tried to look for a game since that was as emotional as this one, but i haven't yet.

  • @TheMayhew88 Indeed. When the argument of video games being art comes up, I immediately think back to this game. SH1 and 3 had it's moments as well. I felt really drained at the end of 3 but I think Hometown had something to do with it. But as great as the others are, SH2 is something very unique.

  • Played through Silent Hill 2 for the first time Oct 2010, doing a full straight playthrough in one sitting with a friend til 4 am. This game is one of the most suspenseful, atmospheric, and evil experiences you can have. I'd hate to say I "enjoyed" it or "had fun" but it's definitely my favorite experience I had in 2010. And that's almost a decade after Silent Hill 2 was released!

  • There's so much depth in this game. It really gets your mind working, interwoven with the story. It's rare to be affected so much by a game's story to the point of depression. In a good way, that is.

  • Pyschology, said, our mind is able to forget something harmful to our emotions and psychology, eg, trauma in the past, sometimes people will forget it over time, but the detail picture actually still remain in our sub-conscious mind. If people use things to retrieve these memory, they can access the cell of subconscious mind. But facing the cruel fact somehow will be detrimental to that person. If James is forgetful, forget something which can hurt him much, he is less likely prone to suicide.

  • The best Silent Hill ever, it is the romantic episode which is between two lovers. I think it is the episode that must be filmed, not the hybrid one they did. The sad thing about the story is that after you play it all, what you were waiting for is nothing more than illusions. It breaks the heart that you lose who you loved. It breaks more to realize the truth after making lot of hope.

  • James: That's right, I did it, I killed her! >=}

  • the moment after James watched the video with the music should be the saddest moment of Silent Hill 2

  • Comment removed

  • Graphics are, IMHO, still great after all these years. Silent Hill 2 remains the best game I've ever played... nothing comes close to it.

  • Way to go James. Tellin' a little girl that you not only murdered your wife, but her only best friend ever.

Anyway, I wonder if people recognize the fact that Mary loved James just as much as he loved her. Enough to forgive him. Er, unless you see this as logically he trying to forgive himself, but ya know.

  • D:

    Why did he kill her...

    ><;;;

  • @sakura13351 coz she put him threw hell when she was sick...james went crazy and couldnt handle it

  • wrtf was the tape about

  • @neon1457 James killing Mary

  • @Snakethoot omg that dick XD

  • @neon1457 Yeah, what a moron, she would have died anyway XD

  • @Snakethoot ikr o.o

  • ok the creeiest thing happened after i watched this. After i watched it i fell asleep and dept about Laura, she was surrounded by zombies and i saved her. io think there may be something wrong with me. lol

  • why does he say tht he killed her ......Laura knew Mary and she even wished her happy 8 birthday , so he culdnt hv killed her....yeah he tried to

  • Important question : The chair faces away from the tv before he starts playing the video? what does that symbolize anyone? Him hiding from his past or?

  • @decimalss Yeah, maybe turning that chair meant facing the truth for him. Or looking back into the past. What would´ve been one week ago, like Laura says in the hospital.

  • I swear I heard this tune.. for the backtrack for a Rap song...

  • what an amazing game. i love it so much. then they killed the franchise by giving it to climax!......sniff

  • I nearly cried when I watched this...

    SPOILER:

The whole thing is just in James' head. Mary did die 3 years ago because (as he said) James killed her. Soon, the letter disappears completely from your inventory- it wasn't real- and Maria is what James wanted his wife to be. He also wanted Mary back with him...

  • No it's not. If it had been, where did Laura come from? Laura knew Mary, and that's how she knew to go to Silent Hill.

Of course the letter wasn't real. It was from Silent Hill, and it was only the first part of Mary's letter to James. The game wasn't just from James' mind, it was from Mary's as well.

Anyway, someone needs to do a RickRoll of the videotape.

  • @BelieveIt1051 Well the letter is from his mind and so is PH, all the monsters, and Maria. But the characters aren't made up so I'm sorry I forgot to put that.

  • No, if you remember correctly, he never got the letter that Mary left him because Laura stole it from the nurse (Rachel) who was entrusted with it. So it couldn't have been from his mind. It could have only been from the mind of the one who wrote it. Mary. She used the power of Silent Hill to send the first part of the letter and bring James to the town. She did that because she couldn't rest until James was at peace with himself. Also, Maria was created by Mary, not James.

  • @BelieveIt1051 It is said that he was made from James' mind but then PH was called "The Executioner" of Silent Hill. I'm just surprised that it's been out for 11 years and we still don't even know whether it's made up or not.

  • Where did it say PH was made from James' mind? I don't remember anything saying that, and I just played it for the first time a few weeks ago. I'm also replaying it now. It says that PH existed before James went to Silent Hill, but James' guilt did call PH to the town to punish him. So PH existed before, but he only appears to those who should be punished for something. SH4 hints at Pyramid Head's origin being from the head priest of the Silent Hill cult. He was likely turned into PH by Alessa.

  • @BelieveIt1051 Hmm.. I do recall reading something about that on the Silent Hill Wikipedia. Look it up cos it's really helpful

  • Well that explains it. Wikipedia can't be trusted for shit when it comes to video games. Some idiot just posted his opinion on PH, that's all.

  • @BelieveIt1051 Across the series he is usually portrayed as, at his most basic, a violent monster. A deeper meaning given to him, however, sees him as a kind of punisher or executioner. He's typically manifested by those who feel an extreme amount of guilt or have an overwhelming desire for punishment

That was on SH wiki and it explains what I told you

  • Well yeah, that's correct, because that is from the game itself. But the idea that PH is from James' mind is what doesn't jive. That's all I was saying.

Also, Maria was a person who actually lived in Silent Hill, then Mary used her spirit and altered her a bit. That's where Maria is from. She is not from James' mind either.

  • @BelieveIt1051 Everyone says that she came from James' mind not Mary. That's the first time I heard that. Apparently when Mary was ill James would go to a bar and meet a girl called Lady Maria. Maria is like that person he met and includes some aspects of his wife.

  • I never heard anything about James going to see Lady Maria. In fact, I don't see how that works. When Maria was a dancer she had black hair. Therefore if James were to recall her during his adventure, she would have had black hair. Plus, James doesn't refer to Maria as anyone he once knew, except to call her Mary. Plus, James going to see her would require him to go to Silent Hill's Heaven's Night, at which point the town was already cursed by Alessa.

  • @BelieveIt1051 I just heard that and also she dyed her hair as you can see so it might have been possible. I read also that she could be some sort of phantom created by James' desperation to see Mary again, and at the beginning of Born From A Wish even she doesn't know if she's real or not.

  • So in fact she couldn't have come from James' mind because 1. Maria existed before James went back to Silent Hill. 2. James wasn't interested in Maria. He only wanted to find Mary. 3. She had Mary's memories. That means she was born from Mary's spirit, not James' mind.

  • My opinion is that Mary salvaged Maria's form from the town's curse and then put her memories into her so that she could help James move on with his life. She gave Maria a new look, which reflected the wild side of Mary that she never showed. Thats why Maria looks like Mary.

  • @BelieveIt1051 My opinion is with most players that James created her from a wish to be reunited with Mary. Hence why it's called Born From A Wish.

  • But that's incorrect.

"Born from a Wish" indicates Mary's wish, not James' wish. James' wish was to see Mary again. Mary's wish was for James to move on with his life. She also wished to be healthy so she could love James back. Maria accomplishes Mary's wish, not James' wish. Therefore Maria must have been born from Mary's wish.

  • Also, thats why depending on your actions in the game, Maria will become more or less real. If James chooses Maria, then Marys memories and spirit will move into Maria, and all that is left of her at the end of the game is her bitterness, which James destroys. That's why Maria starts coughing. However, if he chooses Mary, then Maria will become the monster that James destroys, and then James will meet with Marys spirit and receive the letter she intended for him to have.

  • Also, Pyramid Head was never even hinted at being from James' mind either. Even in the game itself it presents a report about Walter Sullivan who also saw the "red devil" who tried to punish him. Then there's SH Homecoming, which shows that Pyramid Head is just another monster of the town who is called upon whenever someone is there who requires punishment.

I would say that the crawlers and manequinns were from James. But that's it as far as monsters go.

  • fter watching this video, James finally discovered the truth about everything that was happening ... In his drugged and he knew he had murdered his beloved Mary .. Some believe he did it to save it from suffering from a disease that she had ... But in the town of Silent Hill in a way the wishes of a person materialize ... and the desire to Suderland James was to have his beloved back in your arms ...

She knew it all along ....

  • the song for this cutscene - Room 312 - is an awesome song!!!

...but an extremely emotional scene. turns everything completely upside down and out of fashion

  • Leave us alone, leave us both the Hell alone!

... I know what I have to do now. It's time to end this.

*kills the dog that's behind everything.*

  • i remember my first time through the game i was like OH My No He Didn't and we've been wasting our asses here =\

  • When I first saw this video when I played the game, I didn't know it was possible to kill someone by strangling them with a pillow case. So I watched it didn't understand it. That followed by the long dramatic 360 degree camera spin...I didn't understand it. Then...

LAURA: She died because she was sick?

    JAMES: No...I killed her.

I was like, "Oh, h--wait, WHOA, what!!??............."

Stunned silence after that. Even when you regained control of James, I couldn't move the controller.

  • I am pissed off right now..

It's not hard to figure out he killed her.

But what tickes me off is that they won't explain more.

    GAH!

  • @random0chick0731whoisprobablyaguyirl - what else do you want explained... ?

  • lol

  • LAURA: She died because she was sick? JAMES: No... I killed her. (Run Laura, RUN!!!) D : >

  • Room 1408 Stole this scene.

  • The first time I played thru and I saw this, my jaw just dropped...

  • James euthanasia Suderland.

  • 3:54

as bad as this voice acting is appearing to me now, that line still gets me.

  • i hate you too laura

  • Comment removed

  • I love how much something like this puts you in the guys head and makes you feel for him. (Seriously if the experience isn't subjective at this point how did you get here!? Anyway...) What I mean is because he was so fucked up in the head he didn't know that was coming any more than we did. And is just as unhappy about it. Very rare for video games, epic-personal-masterpiece.

  • This cutscene somewhat reminds me of the dead guy sitting in the chair, who you face earlier in sh2...

  • :o

i've never noticed that before until now.

  • And towards the end of SH3.

  • @Mangiff

The dead guy represent james killing himself, notice that it is a tv in front of the dead guy two, just as blurry?

  • For some reason I always thought the dead guy in the apartment building was supposed to be Harry from the first game. Doesn't Harry die in a similar position in front of a tv.. and in an apartment building in SH3?

  • his mind blocked out that he killed her for its own protection but now he remembers. that wat is so intresting about the human mind it adds mistery to ur brain when somthing soo traumatic happens, wether it was ur fault or not. and for this place its called silent hill when its the exact oppisite, it shows u wat u have bin keeping silent urself, and punishes u, and puts u through your own personal hell, until u get it threw ur head wat u did u cant block it out,u have to live it, or not(suicide)

  • That's an interesseting opinion about the main idea of the Silent Hill series. The trauma, the blurred recollections and the punishment. When I played through the Silent Hill-games a couple of years ago I never thought about them this way. At least, it wasn't as clear for me as you described it. Do you think that even the different forms of monsters in the games can be related to the individual protagonist's past?

  • That's the whole point of the monsters. Angela's Abstract Daddy's, for example. It looks like a man raping a smaller person; a child or a woman. They're meant to force the person to face what hurt them, and what they did to hurt back.

  • @PenisVigina yeah there's actually a horomone in your brain that during moments of intense fear, your brain releases it to prevent you from remembering anything traumatic about the moment.

  • @PenisVigina first time someone with the curse of "internet typing" made a very factual point. =)

  • @PenisVigina i dont get it

  • what happens whit laura?

    she died?

  • I don't understand, did he kill mary choking her with a pillow?

  • Yes, he killed her with the pillow. He couldn't stand seeing her in her agony anymore. He is not a murderer, he just put her out of her misery. But watching the tape makes him collapse.

This is one of the most intense cutscenes in a videogame I have ever seen. And the music...

  • not only that but he sorta hated her for taking his life away that and the other part was he couldnt see he suffer anymore.but yeah suffocation by pillow:harsh

  • Right. I played through the game a long time ago. Can't remember all the aspects of the situation. But I can remember something like what you said about his own life and his suffering because of her suffering.

  • he was suffering because of her and he

    1)hated her because of that

2)the other reason he killed her is he couldnt see her suffer so he killed her with a pillow

  • James wasn't a rapist. The reason Pyramid Head was a rapist was to symbolize James' own sexual frustration after his wife fell ill and died.

  • @fromlson There are actually some theories that James may have violated Mary's dead body, symbolizing aspects of Pyramid Head sexually asulting some enemies. Though I don't believe that theory :)

  • @fromlson his wife was ill indeed and she was going to die....but James killed her cuz he couldnt stand it anymore

  • @fromlson pyramid head was a rapist?

  • @26EMOARTLINKINPARK97 Well, not strictly a rapist but he(or should I say 'it'?) does sexually assault the mannequin/lying figure monsters. Like Pyramid Head, those monsters are manifestations of James' sexual repression.

  • @fromlson Actually, Konami said that Pyramid Head was one of the only monsters of James' that did not represent his sexual frustrations. He rapes the monsters as another form of punishment, his true purpose. Once James overcomes his desire to punish himself, Pyramid Head's job is done.

  • not just james.

  • u mean Tomas?

  • and...the wierd thing was that after the tape the hotel was OLD unlike before the tv...was he to deep in memory lane to notice his surroundings?im not very sure skipped the scene cuse the TV had static a long time so i thought i had to quit

  • actually you cant blame him mary was gonna die and she didnt want too so she got all pissed off and so she hated her loved ones especially james.he couldnt take the torture so he suffocated her with pillow

  • why do i feel bad for james? shouldn't i feel pissed at him for killing his wife?

  • A VCR? Holy crap I'm old.

  • I hate you james...i hate you i hate you i hate you...im...act...ting!

  • Why would Laura want to leave town and potentially become adopted by someone who killed her best friend?

  • he did kill her which is a sin thats y he was getting punished, but it wasnt fully 100% out of badness, cause she was in pain. and at first she didnt no he killed her.

  • Was that a murder scene from the tape ?

    I cant tell

  • i played silent hill 1 a million times but i only played silent hill 2 once (water). I have to say that silent hill 2 was the best sequel to a game ever! i still have it tho i own a ps3. i might rebuy a ps2 to play it through all the endings.

  • Yeah Silent Hill 2 was amazing.

  • u can play ps2 games on a ps3. i no cause i have both.

  • yeah i found out that ps3 used to be able to run ps2 games but was removed from the 40gb model. i just tried to play silenthill2 on my ps3 and no go.

  • I kinda of always wondered what became of Laura afterwards, I know Leaving has her go with James but in the other endings did she ever leave or just continue her hopless search.

  • Yeah, I've been wondering that too, just completed another playthrough of the game. It's never really explained, maybe they'll use her in another silent hill when she's older.

  • saying sorry is not going to bring her back James

  • thx Captain!

  • i get that the video tape is a good way to let the player know what happened, but why would James make a snuff film of him murdering his wife? That evidence is kind of incriminating.

I just imagine James in court pleading innocent then they show the tape and James is like "oh yeah i forgot about that."

  • Look how blurred the murdering part on the video tape is...looks more like a memory which came back to James when he watched the tape, or it was Marry who wanted to show him what he really did to her.

  • that part with the murder really wasn't taped by him.....it just appeared.....

    CREEpy

  • The tape is a metaphor for James' mind finally coming to terms with his role in Mary's death.

The actual tape didn't exist in the first place. It once did, but it was destroyed along with the hotel.

  • exactly, but he did not record himself murdering her in the original tape. yeah silent hill doesn't play around man.

Its kinda like in silent hill 1, when cheryl appears on tv in the mall. No body recorded it that either.

  • Yes, the tape triggered the memory, which appeared in the form of the last bit of footage on the video tape, via Silent Hill's mindfuckery.

  • Yeah, so much in this game is symbolic. Btw, did you guys notice that while the entire city is decayed by time the Hotel looks mint and in perfect shape? Then when you exit the room after James learns the truth it's completly wrecked. Did it just suddenly break or was it actually like that all along? I think it's safe to say that James has more than a few screws loose.

  • I guess since James remembered it like it was 3 years ago, that's how it was portrayed. I don't know.

  • I think you're right. James remembers it that way and sees it that way, even though it's really torn down and broken to everyone else. Goes to show just how mad James really is.

  • cant answer the question when laura asked why ?:P

if he did itd be something like " cause i saw this stripper in blue heaven and realized mary aint as hot as that yo!" or maybe " i need some lovin' and shes just coughing all day " or maybe " cause im horny and I LIKE DANCIIIIIIIIIIINGGGGGGGGG" , thank god he replied with "i'm sorry"

  • whats the name of the song playing, after the video stops ???

  • The song's name is MAGDALENE...i got it ^^

  • Ops i mean... TRUE it's the name ^^

  • lol 3:43 I HATE YOU I HATE YOU I HATE YOU!

  • i dont think laura is fake guys... cause eddie could see her too

  • what i assumed was that laura was created in a similar manner to maria, except for by mary while she was in the hospital instead of by james.maria was visible too,and she was just an idealized version of mary.

  • Im pretty sure Laura meant to be a real person

  • either way,im just theorizing.i cant be sure either lol.

  • No, Laura is an actual person. Everyone in the town is, except for Maria and the Pyramid Heads.

  • James got away with murder!!

  • Lol I was shocked at this point in the game like two years ago

  • That's a gross oversimplification of the plot. As evidenced by the Mary conversation hallway, she became angry and lashed out at people, probably hurting James as well. And besides, she also expressed the wish to die. Depending on what ending you prefer (since none are canon according to Konami), James' true reasons for killing Mary can vary. But it's definitely not 'LOL UGLY U DIE'.

  • whatever is the reason james should not been killed his wife, why in the world u want to kill the women u loved so much cuz he loved her a lot

  • Mercy. Frustration. Anger. Just some of the reasons.

  • Wouldn't that have been nice. But he is no saint or selfless. He just snapped. Heh Random answering. XD

  • i love laura

  • this song sounds like your regretting on what you did before and you confessed it to someone weakminded like a child

    just like this scene

  • lol youve got to wonder why james would say that to a KID!i may not like laura much but he probably traumatized her for life...if indeed she IS a real kid...this is the only part where i really felt sorry for laura, even though she steps on you and locks you in a room with monsters and calls you a 'fartface' lol

  • i loooooove this part of the game! The song is beast!

  • this scene is what really gave me this idea, but heres my theory on laura...shes like maria, except she came from MARYS mind while she was in the hospital because james never came to see her, shes the part of mary that didnt want to accept her own death and thought that james hated her, just listen to her in this scene and youll get why i think that

  • shes the daughter mary wanted to have coming to haunt james

  • that makes sense too

  • La pequeña Laura es tan inocente que es la única que no ve monstruos.Laura fue agarrando ódio a James, porque siempre lo veía serio y parco en palabras, hasta el punto de llegar a completamente odiarle.

  • ... everyone in Silent Hill 2 is blonde. o_o With the exception of Angela, of course.
