  • This song puts me in the happinest of places...

  • The least impressive thing about jill's voice is her whistle register and that is amazing i love her ! That voice is everything!

  • Jill is beyond sexy.

  • I thought that was Minnie Ripperton doing that whistle in the background. That's Jill? I thought she sampled Minnie, she's a huge fan of Minnie. I didn't know Jill had whistle register.

  • God, bless her and her music.

  • everytime i see the first picture my jaw drops.. FLAWLESS that woman is gorgeous

  • My n*&^% from Oakland made this, rapheal saadiq. fiya

  • Gorgeous

  • this song sends thoughts of real love to mind..substance, concrete foundations..

  • man...this song is insane yo

  • 0:23 shes so beautiful

  • Wow I didn't know Jill Scott did that! But now that I really listen I can tell she was using her whistle register. Wow, she's so talented.

  • Well Jill Scott's booking agency confirms that she hit such note. I doubt they would advertise her for doing something she cannot do, if that should require of her. Also she is noted for praising Minnie as her greatest role model.

  • @iriear I don't think it was a C7, it may have been g6 or somewhere around the ball park but she def entered the whistle register, which sounds beautiful thanks for sharing!

  • i love this song so much!!!

  • when i hear this i really do feel the cool breeze of spring n summer.

it really is a spring summer feeling

  • this is 1 of my favorate songs of the CD

  • hot song

should've been released as a single

  • wow, she can really sang!!

  • this is a beautiful song!

  • the best ones lisa fischer and rachelle ferrell, chaka khan

  • Whats her vocal octave range?

  • Whats her vocal octave range? I knew she could do whistle's just not C7's

  • lets not forget mariah and betty wright.

  • Jill Scott & Rachelle Ferrell are the only crop of singers today who can really SANG. The rest are whatever...

Minnie is the queen of whistle. R.I.P. Perfect Angel...

  • You forgot Shanice, and I do believe Chante Moore stand her ground.

  • Yeah I agree

  • omggg finally someone knows of Rachelle Ferrell shes my favorite singer i hope somday i can go to one of her concerts:)

  • love mis rachelle never heard someone sing like she did on "i can explain"

  • i think she's underrated

  • That she is

  • Very beautiful!!! A true musician, beautiful woman!!

  • I don't care what anybody says. To me at 3:56 she is singing that. Remember Minnie Riperton's high notes can also be comfused with instruments too so who knows.

  • listen again

  • that was her whistle

  • yep

  • agreed I can't tell if its her or the music but she definitely can hit that note. Check out Gimme by jill scott she hits a high note in that song

  • It's Jill whistling and not an instrument! Jill was heavily influenced by Minnie also.

  • wow, i didm't know that sound at 3:56 was jill whistling. i thought it was an instrument! really good!

  • That's definitely c7. Have a computer program that measures a vocalist's register. Jill hits c7 and change. The program actually registers her vocals at c7 and some change. At any rate that mofo can sing!

  • man, u can never get enuff of JIll SCoot

shes da best at mixing her poetry with her music & it always turns out to be beautiful

  • You know the notes in the beginning that was Jill I swear it sounds like a C8 or B7. It sounds like an instrument but its Jill honey. She does it again at the end. Also Jill does whistle, superhead, thrills and everything like Minnie in the background vocals. You can hear Minnie influence. Furthermore, Jill whistles alot in her background vocals and it is heard to tell it is her but its is Definitely Jill harmonizing with her self.

  • Oh my god, you mean to tell me, at the end of the song she isn't whistling!? I always thought she was! That's cool!

  • Where'd you get that idea? She's whistling; it's NOT an instrument!

  • Where did you get the idea of me saying it was an instrument? It's not an actual whistle, it's her vocal in a high octave that sounds like a whistle. Well, according to everyone that's commented, says so.

  • I know; it's called the 'whistle register'. And i wasn't using the word 'instrument' literally, so i wasn't talking about an actual whistle.

  • Understood. Still a good song.

  • To

    blbass904

C7 refers to the actual pitch of C and the 7 gives it a position on the staff. C4 Being middle C and every octave the number changed...C5 ...etc.

  • No we're not confused. Jill has never really demonstrated her whistle register, save this song and "Gimme" where she sings a D6. So until we hear more whistle register from her, it's unfair to make a comparison with her and Minnie. Jill could be equally as good.

  • I actually think Jill Scott's voice is more soulful than Minnie's...it's not all about whistle register. And if it is, Jill's pretty darn good at it. And yes, this IS a C7, I have a piano and checked. Plus, u can compare this with other C7's, just to verify.

  • See this is where yall are confused Minnie Riperton could sing in the Whistle register. Jill can hit notes in it, I love Jill but Minnie whistle was must more powerful.

  • Jill is clearly one, Out of many Philly Legends... Bringing the real to what Motown Philly has to offer. West Philly All Day

  • I LUV THIS SONG

  • Jill Scott can easily access mad octaves. She reminds me of Rachelle Farelle but her own style though!

  • what is c7. I thought it meant the musical chord C7 or C dominant 7th. well if you play the c7th chord with this song it don't sound bad or the c mixolydian mode.

  • Ok not to rain on anyones parade but, if that faded echo of some sort was supposed to be the "C7", this video post is really misleading, as i was expecting some grand soaring or at least audible note. Oh well

  • I am sorry you have a hearing problem, but the sound is very audible, even though it is placed in the background. C7 doesn't mean loud, if the singer has a soft voice like Jill or Chante and the song is smooth like this one the volume is gonna be lowered so as not to mess up the song.

  • first off that probably wasent even a C7 (but what you think or wud like it to be) and even if it was, its still veery weak (my point) which would explain it being faded into the background, go check some other artist, who can do a "C7" with way more intensity (faded or not), this video isn't worth watchin according to its title IMO.

  • Please don't think I'm fighting you, but you seem not sure as what is C7. This is a smooth flowing song it wudn't sound good to have the whistle loud. Chante C7 in 'Love's Taken Over' is also light as that too is a smmoth song. The only diff is that Jill does her to flow with the beat while Chante made her pierced... And the title is not misleading to those who know about whistle register.

  • Oh i know about the whistle register believe me, i wont go into that cause it wud be starting something. Ok let me put it this way please tell me the name of another song she does the "C7" so i can hopefully get a better feel from her.

  • You are right this is not a C7.

  • she is amzing

  • 3:56 is the C7. The whistle note sounds like the beginning of Mariah Dream lover when she does the whistle note in the beginning!

  • she almost sounds like minnie...she is such a great talent!

  • Jill has a great voice but sounds nothing like Minnie..not even an almost.

  • true

  • i like her whistle register but still rachelle ferrell is much better than her...

  • this is my song.

  • Saw her last week @ the CD autograph session. She kicked it for 3hrs doing nothing but autographs. So gorgeous...

  • when does she hit it

  • she is amazing

  • Ok...I am not doubting her, but I need to see this woman sing in front of me with no mic and sing this song because I cant believe it.

  • I met Ms. Scott in 2001. She is as sweet as she is beautiful.

  • Ms. Scott is one of the most beautiful, talented, under-rated vocalists in the music business, by faaaaaaar.

  • i love jill scott

  • It's funny about internet peeps. If someone said, "Jill Scott did jail time back in 1998" nobody would demand proof or credentials to quickly believe this. But something positive like, "Jill Scott can sing C7" now erybody need proof, credentials, singing degrees, doctoral analysis, hahaaa! yall kill me.

  • You are so right dewaul, society is quick to believe negativity b 4 accepting the positive. Jill held that note....I think that people never really tuned into that part of the song cuz its kinda faded into the background. To be honest with you, I didn't realize she was holding that note until it was posted here....and I had this cd in heavy rotation in my player when it 1st came out. You made a good point about how backwards society can be though. But I love me some Jilly from Philly!

  • U kno wat? It's about time somebody said dat! U are SO right!

  • I must alos add that on the highly respected AMG Jill Scott is spoke of having express great love and appreciation for Minnie - The originator of Whistle in pop music. That to me says she has the ability, unless she is cruel to herself for having to pretend actually hitting minnie-like notes

  • Well, this is very strange, because I would have never thought that Jill Scott could ever sing a C# 7 ever. Well, good job, I sound a little modeled, but people could just be that damn good.

  • is that her note in the background? if so that is whistle register!

  • Dumb. FAGG, anyone. can edit. on Wikipedia. anyone who studies. music. can tell that was not her. i wear the. pants FAGG. im not here for you. if thats her. sis. i wanna see it live. not a studio. trick.

  • I guess u R obsessed with faggs! Wikipedia is a useful encyclo...and editors have to give references in support of claims made. References were given in support of Jill's whistle so take up ur concern with them. Not every singer go about flaunting whistle like Mariah and Shanice. Jean Carne hit high notes but never flaunt it like Minnie. So show some level of intelligence in ur comments.

  • it's her. jill scott is one of the few females that could do the whistle register.

  • she's so pretty

  • That. is not. her singin that note. and hitting notes over the 6th octave do not mean its whistle register or whistle note.

  • What evidence do you have to dispute that it's not her and where is your definition of whistle register. Please show some professionalism if you are gonna criticize.

  • Wikipedia says it's her, and I've seen and heard her hit high notes in concert before.

  • damn, and wat she hit dat note! wow! that just proves her exponetional power of her voice!

    DAMN!

  • wat is a whistle register?

  • Any note above the sixth octave are considered "whistle register" notes. A C7 would be the highest C on a piano.

  • Actually any note past E6 is whistle or superhead notes!

  • Actually, on an (normal)88 key piano, its the second-to-last C on the keyboard. So really, C8 is the final note.

  • Thank you :D

  • The highest note in this song is C7.

  • it doesn't sound like she really sang that

  • i saw her perform this song live and she actually did hit the note

  • I have too, she's hit that note at her concert too!

  • really? wow

  • whistle register refers to a series of notes that are so high they sound like a whistle from a kettle, a human whistle or what have you except the person is singing not whistling.

  • i never knew she had a whistle register until i googled her and she really does

  • Also Jill Scott always sings in superhead and whistle in her background vocals. Listen carefully to all her backgroud stuff especially from this album, you will hear the whistles and superhead high notes. She is a colortura soprano!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thats her? I thought it was some sound FX! I am completely awed!

  • she definitely is, along with erykah badu, seriously creative...her voice is so heavenly and full of soul...one of my favorite songs by her :-)

  • Jill is just a breath of fresh air, her and Erykah Badu. The give some food for your brain to eat on. That's substance in their material.

  • I want some more of this kind of gourmet excellence...Yay Jill!

  • I feel ya on dat!!!

  • And for your soul... yeah.

  • Jill and Erykah are one of the few true artists the world has today.

  • Her voice is simply divine
