I'm only 21, I can't imagine for the life of me what life must have been like back then. When I asked my Grandmother she told me not to think about it, that no one should know the terror that a war like that causes but I can't help but listen to your stories. You paint a beautiful if heartbreaking picture and I really just wanted to thank you for sharing something so important that can be kept forever.

It is so wonderful to listen to your stories, Peter. I especially liked your description of the pigeon-wings crackling like gunfire. I do hope you make more of these videos! Someone needs to tell the stories!
I've been listening to you regularly, in the leisure of my own retirement, from Charleston, the capital city of the State of West Virginia, USA. Bless you for affirming our experience and humanity as elders and for relating the history of your life and times to educate and inspire the young. I've greatly enjoyed your musical contributions as well. Thank you and best wishes.
I hope you will keep going with this story. I'd love to know how it went for you once you got there. How Bess did and the rest. It is so interesting, thanks for sharing!
Peter, this is an absolutely gripping story! You make me feel the emotional turmoil, and the fears, of the young you as this horrendous experience happened. Please do continue.
I cant imagine going through what you did an as a child I have seen countless movies about the war and the bombings in England but now to know someone that actually lived it is amazing your parents did the right thing by sending you away....as always I could listen to you all day good job as always Peter...:O )
That was wonderful Peter and your parents did the right thing. Thankfully I was never in a war but my aunt was at Pearl Harbor the day it was attacked.
Hi Grandad! That was wonderful to listen to. I can imagine the war was tough on all but more so for the children that were sent away. Not knowing the welfare of their loved one's left behind had to be a horrible thing to experience. Was your home ever bombed and if I may ask, what ever happened to Bessie? I must say the siren and bang at the start of this video made me jump!
Peter, I think your parents did the right thing, because you lived so close to LSE which made submarine and ship components for the RN and Boulton & Paul who made airframes for the RAF, both targets for the Germans. I believe LSE was hit one night with several lives lost. Although I lived just a short distance away, I was a baby at the time, so I don't remember it, but my mother told me our road was strafed by a German plane, and apparently a bullet missed me by just a few inches.
I love it when you talk about WW2! My grandfather, who fought in the war in the US Navy, passed long before I was born, so I never got to hear his stories. I'm so glad you do these videos!
Great story, Peter. I can't imagine how hard it is for so many parents to have to send their kids away for safety's sake, not really knowing if they'd even see them again. War is hell.
@KeromorV2 well, i guess you have the right to do so, but i don't get why people would dislike a video. i understand if it's a video showing rape or someone popping a zit or something - that's something i'd dislike. but why dislike a video like this? just go on and view something you find more interesting, no need to thumb it down.
@KeromorV2 Why would you even watch the video then? The simple fact is that you're an immature brat, just go away please, watch your cartoons and play your video games and leave other people alone instead of being a little punk.
@Argentium009 Hey Retard I said i didnt like the video, How am i going to know if i dont like it if i dont watch it ? Loser and there is a dislike button for people who dont like things just because they are not fanboys wanting to suck his old cock like you doesnt mean they dont have a right to click it, im gonna click it on every video of his now haha fucking retard.
@KeromorV2 Way to prove that you're not a little childish punk troll there Keromor. Children must play. What a shame they have to fling their poo at other people though. Honestly, why can't parents mind their little spawns of evil instead of sitting them in front of a tv or a computer as a babysitter and forcing the rest of us to have to deal with their disgusting behavior?
Excellent reading and account of your war experience. It brings home the day-to-day ordeal of the war for civilians and the toughness needed to survive. How confusing and harsh and occasionally wonderful it must have been for children. Thank you very much.
War seems to be a cycle that comes and goes. It was particularly difficult in your day and in your life. You can well understand the same fear that Iraqi children felt as the U.S. bombed Baghdad and slaughtered thousands. Whatever the time it occurs war is a crime against children. So glad you survived Peter. What happened to Bessie? Did she make it?
fantastic Pete these need putting in print i know it was not all good back then but your story's have warmth to them ,to which is some how very comforting
A triple treat: You doing a reading, which is always a pleasure - of a self written story, even, which makes it more intense - and another installment of the "Telling it all" series, which is so rewarding and wonderful to follow.
The story moved me a lot ... Thank you so much for sharing.
Great story :) i Love your videos.Im very interested in history especially the world wars.So thankyou for telling us about your experience. I have an airade shelter in my garden still.
Thanks for the stories, i really enjoy them.

@TigerlilyCO2011 some bombs fell in the street and demolished a few houses but ours only suffered minor damage and yes Bessie survived.

I'm sure you have told us what town you grew up in, but I don't remember. I always picture it as London..... but I'm sure that isn't true.
WERTY317 10 months ago
@WERTY317 No it wasn't London, I lived in Norwich on the east coast of the country. Many many cities were bombed not only London.
