IMO Oscar was a true musical giant. Had the pleasure of getting to know him BIT IN SF. A true gentleman, maybe not the greatest innovator (hard to do on piano) bot no one I've heard could out swing him. Heard him a a jazz festival in Napa CA. He'd just flown to SF & was driven to Napa. He was about 45 min.late Ray & Ed were already there. He arrived, changed clothes & to a standing ovation, w/o 1 warm up note played a *****concert. A real artist, not a fake like Keith Jarrett. Oscar is awesome!
I first heard this as a teenager in 1955 & bought the JATP 12inch LP. This Oscar Peterson performance did set the bar in jazz piano at the time & it still sounds fantastic today.
I defy anyone on the planet not to tap their feet at 1:12 as you are drawn into the swing of this.
@thomas1140 it gives me goose bumps when he starts swinging, he beat just makes me want to dance, you probably are feeling that same thing But when he goes into the MOAN and someone is stamping their feet i think it's me
For information, the transcription of the entire Oscar Peterson piano part from his 1953 recording of Tenderly, including the complete block chord solo and rubato intro and ending (not this version) is now available at jazznote.co.uk
Sounds like Art Tatum but more fluid and less harmonically complex, more swingy, more right hand oriented, and some different techniques closer to bop
It swings!! What a great bass player Ray Brown was in contributing to the band sound. He and Oscar worked so well together. Not forgetting Herb Ellis too.
I just closed my eyes and listened to this memorable rendition of Tenderly played by the pianist of all pianists Oscar Peterson. Long will it live in my memory. pathar
@galfredos Hi galfredos! Sorry it took me one year to find this comment! I just finished finally putting my transcription into Sibelius so it looks like sheet music. Thank you for this great Japanese rendition!!
@itmsjim love how Jim incorporated the rolling bass into the song. Thanks for the inspiration. I'm still trying to get the few chords down without making mistakes.
