Great fiddlin', reminds me exactly of Kenny Baker's playing. He is my fav fiddler, but must say Blaine Sprouse is a very close 2nd;) I had the privilege to play with Kenny once while he was touring with the great dobro play Josh Graves. I am 26 now, and that was when I was a little fella. Keep up that great smooth smooth fiddlin' !!!
You have a really great tone. I like that "Fat Finger" technic. I will say it is too fast for me to follow, but the tune it self is beyond my level at this point. When you speak the level could be higher, but what a nice video. Keep up the great work !
Many advanced players could pick up that tune at that speed; however, beginners to intermediate would have a hard time getting it at your "slow speed". It's really medium speed. I've been at a lot of fidle workshops. To teach a tune, most teachers break a tune down phrase by phrase and explain the up-down bows. It's very difficult to catch your bow directions and slurring on the video.
What if your fingers aren't fat enough? I have to be double jointed to hit both strings. I suppose I have delicate piano fingers. What's a girl to do? Go out and dig more potatoes?
I loved it but it the bowing was too fast (even at slow) to follow the 'lesson'.
Hi, I have the same problem. You do what you have to do. I change my hand position and either play flat up to the first joint, or use the side of my finger.
oh gosh! everybody xms 32 is a world champion and he has won 200 contests and when he tell's you something,by gosh listen!! He plays with rascal flatts according to him. I think he's full of shit.....
Hey Shannon, great fiddlin'. I'm a NOVICE on the fiddle and am very interested in keeping track of your lessons that you might put up here on youtube. Could you please try to simplify or maybe explain alittle bit more what you're doing on both ends and also give the key signature you're playing in.
Great video.I've been looking for a tutorial on wheel hoss for a while now. Could you write tab at least for the second part? I've got most of it, but the b part is giving me some trouble.
I need you to give me lessons! I live in B'ham, AL,and I can't find anybody to teach me this kind of stuff. I've been taking classical violin for 7 years but still can't figure this stuff out. I need a coach. If anybody knows about a good web site or movie that teaches bluegrass please send it to me! Thanks JD SMITH
Sorry what? That was a lesson? Erm I don't want to burst your little bubble of thinking that it was but it wasn't! All you did is play it through a couple of times at different speeds! When you were trying to video the bow strokes we couldn't actually see your arm! Useless! I love the song though but the alleged tutorial - well it wasn't!
You do have a point about the bowing being a bit obscured, but this tutorial really helped a lot with this tune.
Even Albert Lee's outstanding guitar instructional videos sometimes having him doing a "slow" version of a lick at 130 bpm (as opposed to 150 bpm full speed).
BUT.........I will give 'constructive advice' concerning the way this was played. It was played very well EXCEPT: look out for your F note. You consistently play it as F# and it's an F natural.
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! I have enjoyed your wonderful and informative video. "Wheel Hoss" has mystified me for years and now I picked it up in one sitting. You're good teacher and I hope you do more high level tunes!
I have tried on and off to learn this tune from the Ricky Skaggs version since it came out in 1983! I could never quite get it, because it was so layered, and so ridiculously fast. Not complaining, I love Ricky, but this tutorial cleared up my confusion about the melody. Great job!
Very nice job explaining what you are playing and you showed it well. You are a very good player and your fiddle has a wonderful sound. From a fiddle teacher and Kansas Fiddle Champion. I will share this with my students!
Niccceee~~!!! I hope one day i can play like you :)

Most people seem to need it slower to learn it.
