@spadegreen34 Something easy to work with would be a Sansa Clip or a Galaxy Player or a Sony Walkman. If you would rather keep your current player, I would say to get an portable amp, since the flaw in the ipod and most other players lies mostly within its crappy amp. Has the bonus of letting you use higher-end headphones better and louder than most players, but it is another box to lug around.
At my school everyone with $ has beats. My family has money but I personally did not want to buy beats because they're insanely expensive. A friend of mine just recently sold me his beats by Dr.Dre solo HD for $40 without the monster cable. I use a regular AUX cable and these beats are just amazing i love them they sound better than my old skull candies and I'm glad i found a great deal on them.
Why bother to explain to them? Just let them listen to the (bad) music they feel is all right? :) While people that are more informed and desire better sound quality will find their way to better headphones/IEM. My point: "Life is too short for bad music", but it's their life and they are contented with it.
I bet if i held up a pair of Beats By Dre and a pair of Ultimate Ear Triple Fi 10 Pros and offered a person to pick one that they would like to own, that they would chose the Beats. Its sad, the beats have horrible high lows, but the Ultimate Ear Triple Fi 10 Pros, are just all around better headphones, and they cost the same. Its all about the labels to these people.

You're right for the most part, the association with "Monster Cable" is the reason I am not bying these headphones. Their products are over-marketed junk. The only reason they are succesful is because of the ignorance of the casual consummers, who do not know much about technology, like how HDMI is a digital signal and there is no difference in signal and thus video quality between a $10 Monoprice cable and a $250 Monster cable.

I like my beats studio because of the comfort (Ive tried about every other headphones in best buy and staples) also they feel very sturdy on my head now all the headphones i try on in stores like fye (ex. steenhisers and bose) feel like plasticy trash. I listen to dubstep so im a biggie on sound quality and i find that they are good sound quality if you buy the right batteries if you buy cheap batteries the bass sounds crappy if you listen with batteries like energizer they sound great

@StudioOfRandom Still not a good choice. Beyerdynamic Dt 770s have a much better Bass response and bass extention than the beats and they won't wash over the mids and the highs.
Beats by Dre is a fashion statement, they are not good headphones, I never had the highest end audio equipment but 50$ Chinese knockoff Beats sound exactly the same as the real 250$ Beats and to me that suggests that Dre's photo on the box is not worth that much money and the plasticky build quality does not help either.

Of course you'll need multi-thousand dollar headphone amps and DACs..

Bought the Studio mainly for the Looks. The sound still sound better than my $129 Sony XB700. + the looks and noice cancelling maybe worth $200. They lower the price and I'll be happy.
It's sad, on the actual Beats By Dre stands in stores like Best Buy they actually have an amp attached to the headphones hidden underneath the table and they specifically only let you test songs that highlight the Beats. Talk about deceitful testing and advertisement.
Becareful not to get in trouble with beats..I found the ear buds by Ultimate Ears are crazy incredible!! They are the ones that make custom ear molds for professional artists. The ones I have are called TripleFi 10's at $400 which there are no fakes so amazon is a good place to buy. But good review on headphones
Ok as an audio nut..I completely agree with the beats being waaayyy over priced!! The sound quality is very bad!! There marketed towards younger "I wanna look cool" crowd. The guy that worked on and designed the beats is out of his contract with beats and now has his own headphones out called..SOL they still arent great quality but..are only $99 for both the over the ear and ear buds. @5kyzthelimit Good tracks? Anything with a good double bass going on should be a good test for bass coherence and depth.. Most older music released prer-90's was better mixed and mastered (sad facts of technological advancement), so you can come up with anything with a good snap and dynamic range.
For placement of instruments, fire up some movies and see how accurately placed the voices and sounds are.

See it's interesting, the Solos to me are MUCH better than the Studios. The studios have a massive swelling of high bass that drowns out everything else, and the lower bass (below about 150 hz) is nonexistent. The highs are somehow sharp and unclear at the same time... I actually like the solos pretty well. Def more bass than flat, but still I like em fairly well for hip hop and dubstep.
I own beats studio, i like them. Sound is worth about $100-150 imo, add 50 for style= 200 max. But lets be clear. 1. They are consumer headphones. 2. They only work for rap/dub. 3. Nobody will ever use them in a studio, ..ever. With that being said sound is subjective to the listener, but sound can be measured. I can also understand the frustration people may feel when people that only heard beats run around and say they are the best, and will now answer them with one word, micro-phonics.
You said the Pros were ok sound quality, they are shmexy and i can find them cheaper.(I'm not a die hard Beats fanboy(no offense but the other headphones he recommended are kind of ugly))

I have beats by dre solo headphones ($179) and also have a pair of cheap panasonic headphones ($23) that I am wearing now and they sound almost the same, just not insane bass.

From a person that owned $99+ iBeats in ear by Dr. Dre [with warranty] about a year back, the cable is terrible and they kept falling out of my ears. The sound itself wasn't too terrible, but not well for the $100 I paid for them. They broke near the cable within 2 weeks, and I took them back to WalMart [where I got them from]. I got a new pair [for free] and they broke within two weeks AGAIN in the same spot. I was so disappointed, and I see your points.

It's sad, on the actual Beats By Dre stands in stores like Best Buy they actually have an amp attached to the headphones hidden underneath the table and they specifically only let you test songs that highlight the Beats. Talk about deceitful testing and advertisement.

Becareful not to get in trouble with beats..I found the ear buds by Ultimate Ears are crazy incredible!! They are the ones that make custom ear molds for professional artists. The ones I have are called TripleFi 10's at $400 which there are no fakes so amazon is a good place to buy. But good review on headphones

Ok as an audio nut..I completely agree with the beats being waaayyy over priced!! The sound quality is very bad!! There marketed towards younger "I wanna look cool" crowd. The guy that worked on and designed the beats is out of his contract with beats and now has his own headphones out called..SOL they still arent great quality but..are only $99 for both the over the ear and ear buds. Great quality, sold at best buy.

@5kyzthelimit Good tracks? Anything with a good double bass going on should be a good test for bass coherence and depth.. Most older music released prer-90's was better mixed and mastered (sad facts of technological advancement), so you can come up with anything with a good snap and dynamic range.
For placement of instruments, fire up some movies and see how accurately placed the voices and sounds are.

See it's interesting, the Solos to me are MUCH better than the Studios. The studios have a massive swelling of high bass that drowns out everything else, and the lower bass (below about 150 hz) is nonexistent. The highs are somehow sharp and unclear at the same time... I actually like the solos pretty well. Def more bass than flat, but still I like em fairly well for hip hop and dubstep.

I own beats studio, i like them. Sound is worth about $100-150 imo, add 50 for style= 200 max. But lets be clear. 1. They are consumer headphones. 2. They only work for rap/dub. 3. Nobody will ever use them in a studio, ..ever. With that being said sound is subjective to the listener, but sound can be measured. I can also understand the frustration people may feel when people that only heard beats run around and say they are the best, and will now answer them with one word, micro-phonics.

My $100 Klipsch Image S4i earbuds blow away my $350 Beats Studios which are currently sitting in the box with the on/off broken since Monster has refused my service requests. When I buy my next pair of headphones i'll for sure be buying the Klipsch Image One (Same price as Solos) or the Klipsch Mode M40 (Same price as Studios).

Apple is aimed at the ones that want the great looking, "high-class" equipment, and want to set themselves apart of the rest. Yes, Apple made OSX, which all in all is an extremely lightweight, easy to run and all in all a pretty good OS. But let's be honest, their products are mediocre for a premier price. To me, an iPod or a Mac isn't worth the money at all. Much like these headphones, only that these don't have an OS.

From a person that owned $99+ iBeats in ear by Dr. Dre [with warranty] about a year back, the cable is terrible and they kept falling out of my ears. The sound itself wasn't too terrible, but not well for the $100 I paid for them. They broke near the cable within 2 weeks, and I took them back to WalMart [where I got them from]. I got a new pair [for free] and they broke within two weeks AGAIN in the same spot. I was so disappointed, and I see your points.
