Is there an English speaking community there or does one have to really immerse in the language? I've always wanted to live in Odessa, it one of the most amazing cities in Europe as far as Im concerned.
1965 - on arrival in Odessa the first thing i wanted to do is walk the stairs and the images from the film came flooding into my memory as well as the memories of my maternal family my great grandfather was in the black sea navy
I just got back from Odessa 2 weeks ago, and the one thing that I see missing is all of the vendors. This video did not have a single person selling old Soviet war medals or anyone trying to take the guy's picture with some bird.
I have walked up these steps. I have ALSO walked down these steps and taken the funicular. And been to the Opera in Odessa. Damn I feel so good about myself today.
When i see this it bring back great memories!! I was only there for 6 weeks in July of 2006.The buildings, The architecture, The people, Will never forget spending all those sunny days walking along Deribasovskays street and relaxing at Mick Orilies irish pub, Going to Itaka and Ibiza nightclubs and just enjoying the scenery. I will be going back for sure :-)))
I lived there too, for four months about ten years ago. Such an incredible city, my favorite city in Ukraine. I could feel the history of the city like it was a living thing. I love the people of Odessa and Ukraine.
Seeing videos about Odessa gives me a longing that only others like yourselves can understand...
I have a really great memories from that stairs and surrounding during the orange revolution.they r great especially during the night.hope to get there back soon
Cool I walked there also in year 2004! I was only once in Odessa! It was Ukrainian Biology Olympiad! I ll never forget that time! Tnx and respect for this video **)
Thanks to all of you who have commented this video with similar remarks ("I have walked these steps and miss them"). Glad to have provided nice memories to all of you.
I am originally from Odessa, and we lived a couple of blocks away, or so my parents tell me. My only memory of being at those steps were one night my parents took me out with them as they were walking with their friends. This was in the later half of the 1980s. At that time there was an escalator running along those stairs. As I remember it, if you are facing down the stairs, the escalator would have been on your right.
Oh man I can't believe this is on here! I haven't been there in so long but I remember the last time I was there there were gypsy's at the bottom of the steps asking to tell my fortune >_<
This is so Kewl and nostalgic! How much I have enjoyed these steps...7 long years in my ever beloved Odessa. Miss You Real Bad Odessa....You are Simply THE BEST....cant wait to be in your loving arms again.
Where do you live, since you have been there more than once? Do you live close to Odessa? If you come there again, why not make a video of your own - maybe featuring a pram...
I live in London, but my friend married a girl from Odessa 6 weeks ago, so we've been over there regularly. I'm going back again soon, I'll keep my eyes open for a pram (or Lada!).
That would be a great idea! Push a Lada down the steps - don't forget to have some good shots from below like the original pram - and some close-ups of the (female) driver's facial expression while it lasts. Anyway, nice to hear from someone who has also walked these historical steps.
Great pan shot of the steps! I have always wanted to visit this location. I filmed a Super 8 pram-steps sequence in the U.S....it was a fun, but challenging shoot. Thanks for posting this footage.

I don't know about Odessa, but I learned that there is a fairly large American/British/Canadian community in Nikolaev, about an hour and a half away.

I ran up those steps in 45.0 seconds in 1997. A bit difficult to get into a rhythm because of the variations.
