Great song. Inspiring lyrics. Got me through a very bad break up with a girl I was deeply in love with in 1980. Last I heard she was on husband number 4.
I was introduced to ELO way back in the mid seventies. A group of ELO diehards we knew the lyrics of just about all the songs and many a night on the way back from the pub was accompanied by us singing them much to the annoyance of neighbours trying to sleep. Sadly most of that happy bunch are now dead, taken far to early, including my best mate who died at the age of just 44. I'm 55 years old now and hearing an ELO song can transport me back 30 years to those happy days. RIP guys. Not Forgotten
This has been my all time favourite song since I was 17. I am 48 now and have no intention of selecting a new all time favourite. To me, it depicts someone who is in a situation of which there is no way out, hence the big wheels turning - never ending, on and on they go.....
I think - nay, I HOPE when my last sounds I hear on this Earth are heard, it is of this song that my ears record my last moments. Nothing would better such an accompaniment of the only ascension to Paradise.
From the comments posted all over this song, I can see I wasn't the only one affected by the depth and beauty of this song...even from way back in '77...Jeff Lynne is simply amazing...
I sit here listening as tears flow down my face. I was called a faggot for listening to those "fiddle-fags". It was so deep at the time. I was only about 12 years old and I could not get enough of this music. Now I am a 46 year old man who is deeper than anyone I know and the heart and emotion of my life move me to the core...I am so blessed and so alone at the same time. I have a strong Faith but sometimes I long for the times in my life when I could just escape the sound of the travesty.
@777deadinside do understand. and do sympathise. change focus a bit and get some perspective. watch something you find funny & see the absurdity of life. this does not take away from the sentiments you expressed. it balances them
Dramatic undertones and content! It also mirrors my life here in Florida, having lost my Mom and Stepdad to Cancer and also losing my way, too,I can also relate to this tune, too!
nice slow easy goin' song to sit back and let your body and mind rest ..... glad to have seen them live at the world series of rock at cleveland stadium in 78 (phew, gettin old) along with journey and foreigner.
You lost somebody, right? The description of this song replicates the last moments of me with somebody i loved deeply. So i know what you're thinking. :o)
Did he really write this stuff in one night? or was it a weekend? i forget, but even if it took him 10 years he couldn't have come up with a more perfect four song concept. Always a great musician, but i think that this was his moment of genius
I love this. Its between this and "Steppin Out" for my funeral. Dont mean to be morbid but I just love this. Grew up with this album and still love it.
John Lennon himself appreciated that ELO was carrying on where the Beatles left off with some of their symphonic music (such as Long and Winding Road). He said that ELO's music was "the son of I Am The Walrus".
great track from a great album!! the first album i ever bought and still one of the best, double gatefold version- with cut out spaceship . They dont make them like that any more.!
@SirtubalotTX........It is interesting that you and urlord24 bring up the Beatles as a comparison. As someone who was involved in the Broadcast Scene at the time there was a great deal of speculation what the Beatles Music would have sounded like in the early 80s had they not broken up 10 years earlier. A number of respected figures advanced ELO as a model. Remember the Beatles sound evolved dramaticaly over the 10 years they were together.
@SunspotCycle Thanks for that angle. Actually, I try not to compare ELO and the Beatles but it's easy to do sometimes as you can see. But regarding my last post, It's just my biased opinion. I happen to like both the Beatles and ELO but ELO is particularly special to me for reasons that are hard to quantify. You are right.. it would have been interesting to see what the Beatles might have been like in the early 80's.
My 4 yr old son really loves ELO. Of course we play it for him all the time. Glad I'm an old dad...we're just going to step over the last 20 years of rap music and bring back craftsmanship in pop music.
Sooty & tontoropski, totally agree. I started with "Out of the Blue" & never looked back. At 53, I'm taken back 30+ years immediately hearing these great melodies. Just got the Live at Wembley DVD from Netflix & they are awesome without the aid of mixing in a studio...
Sooty 65 spot on, side 3 on this album ( vinyl ) is superb, best link ever from track to track. Harmonies superbl, and the build up to the chorus's are great.

Next to Pink Floyd's Dark side of the moon, one of the best designed albums in music history. It plays well from the first to the last song flowing well.
Who'd a thought it would be possible to better Steppin Out, and on the same album, but for me this is the most beautiful arrangement. Jeff nails it; the classic tune on his classic album. I never tire of hearing this fabulous track...everything comes in bang on cue, strings, bass, drums, synth, all perfectly woven and timed, and as usual Kelly's subtle harmonies are faultless. Awesome.
