Nastiest critters alive!! Good to see them die by the thousands!!! I have smelled that alarm pheromone also, it is a very unique smell. Best to haul ass when you smell it!
@ALLFloridaBeeRemoval thanks for your comment! I am certain you know that evil pheromone smell all too well! Those yellow jackets might be the nastiest critters on earth! Kill them all!!!
That's a great question tarsus. We like to say that bee suits are "sting-Resistant", not "Sting-Proof". When you have thousands of Yellow Jackets trying to sting you, some of them will find a way in, or are able to sting through the suit when it gets pinched or stretched, as we are bending, digging, etc. If one just stands and doesn't move it's possible not to get stung. But we like to get face to clypeus with YJ's.,,,entomological humor there........
Thanks for the answer, I guess that makes sense. I had this idea that perhaps you can somehow distract a significant number of YJs when you're doing your thing, offer them a target which their stingers can sink into .. if they feel they're getting success on that, and none on your bee suits, they might put you on their "to do" list x)
The best treatment I found is to use cold therapy (ice packs)and pain relievers. The pain is quite variable, depending on how many nerves feed the site that is stung, plus how much venom was injected. Also, the more one gets stung, the higher the pain tolerance seems to be.
Yellow Jacket stings are far worse than Honey bee stings imo, but I don't mind being stung, unless it's around my face. Or when I get more than about 50 at a time!
I've heard that it smells like rotting bananas. To me its very similar to antifreeze aroma. Sweet. I love the smell of Yellowjacket alarm pheremone in the morning!
This is a perennial nest, meaning it lasted through the winter. Most Florida Yellowjackets nest in the ground, where they are protected from harsh temperatures and can persist for years. This colony probably was about one year old.

This is a fairly common size nest for us here in Florida. We did one last year in the Tampa area that was 12 feet high and 10 feet around!!!

Wow! That's amazing! How long does it take for them to build a nest that size?
