  • This may be a dumb question, but does amount of power from the stereo matter? I have a big 200 watt receiver and I plan on trying to go directly from the receiver speaker wires to the relay and so on. Will that work if the volume is cranked up (to play music on other speakers) or will it damage the relay?

  • i just watched this on tv 88.7

  • Plug a speaker into a wall, just to plug it in again!

    WTF

  • how did i know tinkernut would have somthing about this

  • was that a hard drive case u where soldering on? xD

  • Thanks man, this tutorial worked like a charm....now its time to impress the ladies.

  • that backround music was SO ANNOYING

  • but didn't you remove the speaker? That means that you would not be able to hear what you were playing.

  • it could have been better if you SPEAKED!

  • @TheSkulltear or spoke

  • my email add raisengunz@yahoo.com

  • can u add my email add i hv many things 2 ask u bout dat relay how 2 function 2 my soundbox

  • How does it pickup the sound to flash lights where there is not a microphone to pick up sound to input to lights?

  • Is this what i need?

Specifications:Input Circuit- Control Voltage Range: 3- 32V DC- Control Current: 15mA Max- Min. turn off voltage: 1V DC- Input Resistance: 2.2kohm min. Output Circuit - Max load current: 3A- Nominal Line Voltage: 240V AC - Load Voltage Range: 24- 280V AC- Min. Blocking Voltage: 600V AC - Max one- cycle surge current: 80A- Min. Load current: 50mA - Dimensions:10(D) x 42(W) x25(H)mm.

  • if i put more amps on the circuit (say a 10 amp relay) then would that destroy the line in source of were the music comes in? If i hook it up to my ipod does that mean that im getting 10 amps coming into my ipod of 10 amps going to the christmas lights? Please help i dont want to break my ipod or anything valuable!!

  • Can you tell me how to add own music to Mr.Christmas with the 6 plug outlets with lights and sounds of Christmas with 20 songs? I'd like to play own music off from a stereo tape recorder. I tried to connect wires while playing tape to and extension speaker, but no luck. ca_gibbons@msn.com . I'd really like to play Boney M christmas songs on my Mr.Christmas lights and sounds of Christmas.

  • wow you sure did that the hard way..and dumb way haha who uses christmas lights??

  • An easier (and safer) way to do this is to simply cut both ends of a light strand, solder one end to speaker wire, and hook that end up to a stereo system.

  • My lights are only on for a couple of seconds then blink off and don't come back. What am I doing wrong?

  • @CameraMikey switch your polarities

  • Using my home stereo and a string of 110 Christmas Lights (small sized bulbs). I cut off the male end and connected to the two speaker wires on the back of my stereo. My lights did not light at all. There is not enough current coming from the speakers to the Christmas lights.

  • Let me try to clarify:

If you wanted to do this manually then you would use a switch to turn the lights on and off to the beat WITH YOUR HANDS. The relay (big black part) is a switch that uses the music signal (where used to be the speaker) to decide when to turn the lights on or off INSTEAD OF YOU WITH YOUR HANDS. So the excess power cord sends electricity to the relay and the relay sends that electricity to the lights.

  • what does the excess power cord do?

  • Comment removed

  • and if i wanna do this on my house what do i do?

  • where do you get the access power chord?

  • 4 star for the drum n bass jam session

  • gigafide, can you please tell us what solid state relay to use?

  • @upbeatanime D2W203F

  • this is kinda a unsafe way of doimng it- first the relay you have isnt rated high enough (amps) to hadle a large load- so at most you might be able to do like 1-2 stings of lights- second- you need to cover your connetions- instead to the adapter - use a extention cord end- third GROUND THE DAMN THING!!!! When ever you are dealing with mains electricity always ground EVERYTHING! so instead of using a 2 prong cord use the 3 prong (the 3 prong is GROUND) and then make sure it is all grounded...

  • Is this posible to make without speaker? just use phones cable

  • what kind of relay is that ?

could you give me teh name part or the model ?

  • i live in uk and looking like this for a projet working on any know a safe way doing it

  • Will this work with a cold cathode for my computer?

  • what relay should be used, text and picture do not match

  • can i use normal speaker cable send to splits so i can run this and my speakers?

i wouldn't want to loose sound quality and assume the power for the lights are taken from the wall outlet and not the speakers themselves and that they simply work as a trigger, am i correct?

  • @upbeatanime

    yes u r right

  • You know, you can do this with low voltage LED's to without any extra external power. Just hook em up directly to the speaker cables. Enjoy ^^

  • so the sound would come out of only one speaker now?

  • the ralay number is wrong. the one used in the video is a D2W202F not an D2W203F

  • nice bass line

  • haha thx 4 the idea I applied it on my car but i converted both speakers for "stereo" lights and used a 12V relay

  • How do you do this for a car? Because I was not smart enough just to buy the sound sensative lights themselves and was wondering if there was a cheap, fun way to make any light sound sensitive with 12 volts. please help...maybe it is exactly the same just using 12v power instead of 110v???

  • does this mean the lights only flash in Mono tehe i make a funny

  • nice :)

  • luckily i have the same speakers as you, so i can do this easily, but, thy're very good speakers so i won't risk them and get a cheaper pair

  • I'm curious why that D2W203F is a 2A when the ones I've seen are 3A. You can also use a KB20C03A which is pretty much the same thing. 3 Amps is the draw you would get from 900 standard 2.5v mini-bulbs. Most strings of Christmas lights have 100-150 bulbs for about $15.

Also, the circuitry from the speakers is pretty much only working as a pre-amp. Most line-out jacks are only about 6v at best and headphone jacks tend to give no more than 2.85v, but the relay takes a minimum of 3v.

  • were to find a d2w203f relay in a house electronic? or which electronic has a d2w203f

  • This is great for Halloween too. If you have one of those cheap light up jack o lanterns hook that up and get a sound file of talking or someone telling scary story so that the jack o lantern will light up with every word so it looks like it is talking.

  • is there a cross reference for the ssr? Or are you one of those posters that don't respond to there comments.

  • It worked! Turned out better than i expected. Thanks gigafide!

  • and ending at 4:00

  • what is song starting at :28

  • whats the name of the background song?

  • and like this isn't a fire hazard

  • would you use a bigger relay for gibber lights?

  • I would use a transistor to

  • Cool 4/5

  • do the speakers and lights have their own power source or are they connected to one power source?

  • power source comes from the speakers one cord. they r linked together

  • y couldnt u leave the speaker in and attatch the wires 2 the leads

  • You could burn your house down. That relay is too small only 2A. Second it should be soldered to a board. You need a RIB relay rated for at least 15A. You can buy kits that use microprocessors to control it. Don't listen to that dude. People with a little knowledge are dangerous.

  • what you mean soldered to a board?

  • @BlasterMaster5 I think the relay is ok, my 100 LED light strands pulls 0.08 AMPS so i think its safe.

  • @BlasterMaster5 And is that like 36 gauge or something wire he's using on a household 120v circuit? Scary!!!!! Wait till that relay goes south and burns up his stereo/computer ect...

  • @BlasterMaster5 yeah but its his house and we obviously know not to do it so who care?

  • @BlasterMaster5

Where can you get these kits that you speak of? Would this setup be dangerous if I used it off of my surround sound (about 60w speaker output)

  • Is the wiring different if the speakers have their own power? I followed the instructions but I am unable to get power to the lights, please help!!!

my ssr has input - + (on the left) and output 280VAC 3 AMP (on the right)

  • the beggining was a more complex computer operated one

  • can some1 explain how to get all different lights to sync like in the beginning?

  • Im having a few problems...i have it all setup and working, only problem is the lights dont flash constantly to the beat. the volume is turned right up on my laptop and my speaker...both power cords are plugged in and turned up. i have a 3amp solid state relay...dont you think i need a bigger wattage amp to power the lights as these speakers i have have gotta be like 10 watt?

  • adjust the treble and bass of the music until u get a good balance.

  • whats the name of the page and whats the name of the black reley thingamagig

  • does it realy vwork

  • yes it dows i tried it already i connect the plug in the computer and play music at the computer and it light up blink lights lol it worked

  • The music come from somewhere else like car radio and etc.

Great video! Going to do it for all my x-mas lights

  • if you remove the speaker where does the music come from

  • the OTHER speaker !!! HAHAHA darling....

  • sweet man

  • wuts the groove playing throughout the vid??

  • One step boeyond- Karsh Kale. This song comes with vista. go to your music folder, then sample music.

  • no its not

  • One step beyond was playing when he tested the lights. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

  • i want the jazz groove playing while he does all the steps xP

  • can you plug this into your ipod?

  • Do you realy need the relay??

  • could i use two prong relays?

  • You just need to look at the relay and see what its rated at. Add up all your lights wattage or amps, and keep it at or below that! Basically a relay is a electro-magnetic switch. It will fail if you pull too much current through the switch side of the relay. Trial and error works too. just buy some extra relays.

  • how many xmas lights can you hook up with that?

  • omg this is great, :D

I have some spare speakers that I can use :D

Gonna use it to bg-lightup my keyboard

  • how many strNDS OF LIGHTS CAN U HOOK UP TO IT?

  • What does the relay do in this circuit? Sorry, I'm quite a newbie in electronics.

  • does this trick works with catodic neons? i need to know fast

  • thats ace as I have got something to do this weekend

  • could you use a relay with a larger output current? say 10A?,

hitandrun83, how is it not a relay?

  • hihi,nice.

    gigafide is pro

  • hey can i buy something like that ?? to make my lights flashing with the music ????

    Dude nice work !!

  • not a relay, its a triac... but i guess you could call it a relay in sense...

  • (i hate to sound mean but i just want to point out somethings) another thing you might want to add to it, or to find out is, does it matter whether the pc speakers have the ampliflier circuit built into it, or is a pc speaker that gets the power from the computer... it does make a difference!

  • also you might want to add some heat shrink tube on the exposed soldered leads, and to the power adapter. 3A max, i think for the triac. I do give you a great deal of credit though! Ive seen diagrams explaining how to do this, and youve just made the video so easy for a person with the least amount of knowledge of electronics or electricity! Ive added it to my favorites! Good Job!

  • AWESOME!

  • Cool video, altho you should have chocen music in the end that makes some sence.

  • lol thats pretty cool
