I've been on an Amtrak (Cascades, Talgo) when they hit a truck. Couldn't feel anything. I've also been on a train that hit a pedestrian and another train that was derailed. Fun stuff. Nice video.
Just recently, I was taking the Maple Leaf back from Niagara Falls (US Side) to Albany-Renssaelaer. Great ride, very smooth, but the train was supposed to leave at 12:35 PM and instead it left at 1:30 PM: 55 minutes late! And that was all due to some Customs crap where a handful of people forgot their passports! WHO THE HELL FORGETS THOSE WHEN TRAVELING OVER THE BORDER!? But in the end, the train made up for lost time and we arrived 7 minutes early. (Thank god.)
I live in Houston,but dont remember this on the news here doing a big story.Sad about the driver.I remember Shepard because I road my bike from Lufkin to Houston and got some great help in Shepard back in the mid seventies.
I seen Amtrak 118(the engine that hit the truck) on monday. The nose was completely reworked, new plow, new coupler, new panel door, but you can still see red paint on the engine. Video on my channel!
@CuseRecorder Yea this train had 2 engines, they were damaged so they sent 1 engine to pick up the train and take it on to Buffalo. I saw that on the local TV news.

i understand the truck driver went around the lowered crossing gates...what in the sam hill was he thinking? i'll just NEVER understand what possesses people to do that...what a way to start the new year...such a tragedy for his family & friends...

In 2005 when visiting the US the first time I rode on an Amtrak all the way to Florida from Boston. And what an experience and legroom!
But everything was so much bigger in comparison to the german ICE ( fast but smaller ).
Well everything is indeed bigger in the US #lol

When no signals, I listen and look. If necessary, STOP if I can't see far enough in each direction before crossing.
Was the trucker so tired that he was half asleep? That would be my vulnerability.

Local paper reports this driver made a delivery at the Purina plant on January 4th of this year. That is where he was going when this happened.
