Good vid but I was taught to hit it in the corner of the glass not the center but I imagine if your car is flipped then it wouldn't matter. I remember someone telling me that it's good to have a window punch on your knife in case your car goes in the water...he became angry when I stated that swinging your knife at a window while underwater would not work so u would need a spring load. No matter how much I told him he would not agree

sweet. quick tip on breaking glass try to keep from breaking 'through' the glass and go for keeping you elbow up and strike with a quick in&out, stopping your hand right 'at' the glass which if you get it right is shattered and not there any more

at the fire academy i whacked a car window ( in a junk car) with the spike of a halligan bar in the center and it didn't break, but i gave it a firm tap on the corner and the window broke like fine china, hell you can take a car antenna and hold one end down then pull the other up and release it and it will snap down and break the window...

Always hit the glass in the corner of the window, if you hit it in the middle it flexes, rather than right in the corner where it is stable. It is pretty easy and unusually quiet. peace

They sell a small key chain glass breaker at most auto parts stores like Autozone and Advanced Auto. Plus it comes with a belt cutter/red LED flashlight and white LED flashlight/ a panic alarm and the whole cover outside glows in case its dark and u drop it,, oh and its also spring loaded so u just hold it up to the glass and push it in a little. If this helps...

Simple spring punch for steel fabrication works extremely well.  Not to mention much safer than most of these tools. Can be kept in a pocket as they are the same size and dimentions of a Pen.

take into concideration, wen the window glass is out of the car, its not being supported by the window frame or car. u could see tht the window was absorbing the energy and buckled wen she hit it. i would think it would have worked on the 1st try had the glass been attached to the car still. more of the energy would have been focused and less would have been lost from the window buckling

just an FYI for yall the name of this knife is the spyderco ASSIST 2...... rescue -assist is the names of two different spyderco knives the rescue and the assist the main diff is that the rescue doesnt have the glass breaker and whistle or the grooved spine on the blade for rope cutting

If you break the window at a corner, your hand/wrist is stopped by the frame, and doesn't follow the punch through the now broken glass.

Hmm. Anytime I've seen glass breakers demonstrated on TV, they apply pressure near the bottom of the window, just above the door. Don't recall what the reason was, exactly. Spring-loaded glass breakers seem to work well. Keep in mind if you're in a car that's sufficiently filled with water, you're not going to be able to put that much force behind your swing.

BTW, you can never get *all* the glass. There's always some little bit that manages to hide somewhere... :)

I think the best option for a glass breaker if you were stuck in your car would be the benchmade houdini or something equivalent. If you drove into a canal or a lake and your car filled with water, the water resistance would not allow you two swing your arm fast enough to make a strong enough impact with those two tools. So something like the houdini with a spring assisted punch would be much more effective. Even if you were not underwater but injured and didn't have the strength.

@ToolshedEd3TF well you cant really compare the BM houdini to the Spyderco assist2 (the actual name of the knife used not rescue assist.. thats two different blades the rescue and assist) but i diegress ...... the BM uses a spring punch where as the spyderco just uses a carbon steel point .. and with the spyderco there isnt really need for a large swing the point is so effective that you only need about 1 foot of swing room and it will break glass( ive done it myself) besides BM is shit anyways

The testing that you did was not very scientific. You used two different pieces of glass, two different test subjects, so your conclusion is not worth the breath you wasted on the video. Nice vid! I think part of the reason the Choate didn't work as well the first couple tries was because it was flexing a lot. As soon as you put your hand on it to steady it, the glass broke. Something about energy dissipation and all that jazz... The Spydie's window had solid frames which kept the glass more solid, allowing less flex and thus, more shattering force. :D In a true-life scenario, the car window will be held in by the door, so you won't have to worry about it flexing! :)
