Tauber singing 'Baritone'...are you joking?...This is two semi-tones above the top baritone key. He finishes on high Bb's. For me, this is the best recording ever of the Prologue, because he captures the atmosphere of the 'song'...Gobbi's version was good, but not up to this standard. Just listen and realise what made Tauber 'great'.
Tauber singing baritone, in English, in the great Caruso's very own Canio costume. I like it! He certainly had a very nice middle and low register. This actually fits his tessitura well.
Wow, that is indeed impressive! I wasn't quite sure as it was not explained in that fashion. Makes Sense Tho,,, Amazing that the fabric held up as well as it did for 13 years. Caruso died in 1923. I wonder if the costume is still in existance?
I think the colour was by a company called "British Cemicolour, I have this taped from the channel four showing. I wonder if the red light is being used as a colour balance?
@northstar1950 It was a single strip 2 colour front and back film, sensitive to red and blue, like Multicolor in the States. It was developed from the UFA colour system by German emigres working in the UK, but had problems with sharpness and lack of cheaper cinema copies unlike Technicolor, which was adopted at Denham by Korda under license. UFA joined with AGFA to make a modern 3 colour film by 1940.
Colour was extremely expensive in all the many rival pre-war systems.
Tauber is superb. I believe he ploughed a lot of his own money into this film which (and I think I'm correct in saying) was the first British cinema film ever to be processed in colour.
1936?
The Prologue and the end sequence were all that they could actually afford to have printed in colour.
I also think he is wearing here the clown costume as worn by Caruso when he played the part.
Love this man's voice. It's a real pleasure. Thanks.

Tauber in Color!! How wonderful! He is perfect as Tonio, with most appropriate Caruso style costuming 5**** to you for this clip.

That is not a Caruso style costume. That is actually the costume Caruso used to own.

Tauber as Tonio? In English? Posted on April Fool's Day? I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it.
Not for the purists who will natter away when they find this site -- but still a truly awesome artifact from a great artist.
