common guys... this is a live performance... pretty tough tune to play... the closest thing to a real goof i hear is between 16-20 sec into the tune from there on it's interpretive. a decent if not wonderful rendition from lovano. jazz has warts and zits give the guy a break. he's a great tenor player.
I can almost understand the point of view of the detractors - this melody is almost holy, and the Ben Webster version is deeply blue and contemplative, all the way through. Webster never releases the sadness, as you can with a jazz blues, by swinging the middle a little more, as Lovato does here. It is a nice performance of a ballad, but "nice" is bound to dissapoint compared to the Webster version.
Pretty mediocre performance . And the sax player plays the melody wrong for a start ! ...Do yourself a favour and listen to glorious Ben Webster´s version of this gem (right here on youtube ) to appreciate it´s true beauty......
@vova47 dude, joe lovano is a living legend. I'm glad you're aware of ben webster, i have most of his stuff on 1st edition vinyl. Just don't let yourself fall into the trap of being a "Jazz snob" Check out joe's playing with John Scofield and his solo albums: "52nd street themes", "Universal Language", "Rush Hour", "From the Soul", "Trio Fascination", "Landmarks". I'm sure you'll change your mind. peace out.
@77syzygy With respect, I have heard Mr. Lovano plenty of times both live and on record and consider him vastly overrated. That is a matter of taste. Playing the melody wrong is a matter of fact. . And they still would be wrong notes whether on a 1st edition vinyl or the cheapest possible cassette. Coming from a supposed "living legend" they're even less acceptable than from dilettante.
@littlebones18 Yes, he shreds this beautiful ballad to pieces. As to Kenny G , I don't know his work enough to pass the judgement, but I suspect he might have paid better attention to melody.
What's the matter with you? This is jazz, what are you talking about wrong notes for? I happen to think his embellishments of the melody are beautiful, but I guess there's no accounting for taste.
@moldycrow Jazz isn't " free for all" kind of music. With freedom comes the discipline and responsibility. I can tell the the difference between wrong notes and so- caledl "embellishments". Can you?
Embellishment is supposed to add something to the original melody in order to make it even more beautiful ,not to change it to something uglier (as in this case). Mr. Strayhorn was a good composer, he knew what he was doing and did not need any help from mr.lovano
@vova47 Just take it this way: this song has already been object of interpretation for so many times, Joe Lovano just puts a bit of solo into the theme. And I think, he does this in a brilliant way. I don't think that the atmosphere of the theme is disturbed that way!
@vova47 Wait...where are the wrong notes? I hear him playing some lines based on the upper structures of the chords, and some lines based on the chords themselves (they're #11 chords in the beginning). I don't think any jazz composer wrote a tune with the intention of it ONLY being interpreted the exact way that they wrote it, every single time. That'd be so bland...

One of the most genius versions of this title I have ever heard.
Joe Lovano plays from the heart. If you really listen, the tune will take you on a journey.

@vova47 Lovano shreds on this. Were you listening to some Kenny G by accident?
