There's a reason there'd be such a long complex description of the powered armor, at the time the book was written no one had heard of it before, Star Ship Troopers invented the concept. If it weren't for that bit of description you're whining about there'd be no Halo, no Ironman, no Warhammer 40,000. Anything involving a robotic suit of armor came from the novel Star Ship Troopers.
Be appreciative that now a days people can just say "powered armor" or "power suit" and you know exactly what it
The best adaption of SST to date is the Japanese OVA. It follows the novel between chapters 2-10 and elaborates Juan Rico's life, interactions with his friends, and what he does after boot camp. It even retains the powered armor and laser shooting bugs. Only problems, Rico is still no Pinoy, the bugs aren't high tech, and no Skinnies! It was done in 1988 as a tribute to Heinlein whom passed away that year.
The point of the novel is that man is a wild animal if he lacks a moral compass. It's more of an essay and novel put together. The movie doesn't portray the M.I. as a tactical force like the book, just random idiotic force.
Obviously he watched the movie first before the book. I've seen the movie and I'm almost finished with the book. There are alot of dissimilarities between the book and movie, FAR too many to post in this wee little comment box. I loved the movie, I'm not too fond of the book really... I have no criticism, but I'm so accustomed to the movie, kinda ruined it for me.
I like the irony of all you people claiming Paul Verhoeven didn't know what the f*ck the book was about and made a brainless action movie, yet YOU fail to see the subtle satire, and criticism that was all over the place in this movie.
Paul Verhoeven never finished reading the book, he only got through like 2 and 1/2 chapters, Verhoeven even admits it in the commentary of the Starship Troopers DVD. You know what people say about Bill O'Rielly, that he formulates opinions about left wing liberal books without ever reading or even finishing those books he wants to trash. So Verhoeven has done the same f*cking thing.
Oh yeah, and the movie is a piece of racist, fascist bullsh*t, and you know what, Verhoeven intended it to be a parody of racism and fascism, Verhoeven actually ends up supporting racism and fascism with this movie since no one catches any of the satire and parody, just like the movie "Natural Born Killers"! BTW, if anyone ever wants to make a decent movie, Starship Troopers is a great example of not what to do when making a decent movie.
Dude the book is awesome ur just to stupid to understand the facism.I love the movie to death but i love the book to death too.But u have to be SMART to understand the book ur just one of those people who is just satisfied with big speacial effects u probably didnt even understand the movies story.
Sorry, kid, you have it backward: great book, crap movie. In fact, one of the worst adaptions of a book to a film ever made, deliberately so on the part of the director, who hated the message of the book.
Hate the message of the book? The stupid-ass director didn't even finish reading the book. He goes in the complete opposite direction of the book.
This guy is a fucking idiot, by the way. I don't think he can comprehend anything. He's probably one of those kids who always writes 'i hate buks' whenever a Social Networking site ask him his favorite book. Another idiot who's too focused on graphics than on good story telling.
I read 1/2 the book and still reading, but I can tell:movie is awesome,'must be seen' but didnt respect Heinlein's ideal;the CGI is a longer story with respectful machinery but not enough, but the main character is not Juan! you can't 'watch' the war in the book well, first 1/2 of the book is politics and Juan's life as a recruit but y'know what? a 'Heinlein's ST movie'would be boring but u still gotta read the book cuz it's the TRUE story also the reason the videos exist, as a ST fan.
The movie is only good for those who don't actually read. For those of us who are literate, the book is extremely thought provoking. I've read every book Heinlein wrote; I was exposed to him at way too a young an age, I guess. ST is not my favorite book, but I like it. I watched the movie muttering, "Did these people even read the book first?" I think not.
Did anyone else notice that Dizzy Flores, a very minor character in the book, got a sex change operation in the movie?
Don't forget, also, that Dizzy dies on the trip back up to the corvette cruiser Rodger Young, after a mission to cause havoc on a piece of a planet occupied by the Skinnies. Early in the book.
The movie would have been great if they used CGI and make it similar to Transformers. Instead, they made 90210 on steroids. And the movie aimed at 13-year-olds.The book was awesome, but it also touched on a lot of serious issues (some even current today) and was written for adults. Note, that Verhoeven didn't make another decent movie since. AT LEAST thay could have use a real military advisor, like they did in Transformers. The movie was glitzy garbage compared to the book...
Did you even read the book? His name isn't even Johnny in the book. It's Juan. He's Filipino. Not American, like in the movie. yes it has its dull moments but thats what war was supposed to be about in the book, the waiting for something to happen and the in-depth politics and strategies of the military. It's not about action like the horrible movie.
Movie wasn't based on the book. It was as if they took some names from the book and put them into a screenplay about something else.
I read the book many many years ago and was SORELY dissappointed that Hollywood had done what they did to it. But I wasn't surprised, as this is pretty typical of the garbage Hollywood produces.
wow wierd. ya the book was great. talk alot about the goverment they lived in. an about the Infantry also remember in the book a single soldier coudl take out at least 100 of those bugs alone. in the book the troops were powerd armour. just read the book lol you'll under stand has nothign to do with the some what lame movie. shwo was better then the movie lol
You are an ADD bitch, this book is fantastic. When you're attention span gets past being a total fag maybe you can re-evaluate it.

I think he was looking through the book for a picture of a bug, since he obviously doesn't read yet.

Another thing about the book the action is in chapters 1,10 and 13. The rest is more like the life of an average soldier.

-each boob
-ever time they say GO GO GO! or COME ON!
-ever scene with Neil Patrick Harris. For an added challenge chug when NPH is on screen.
