I was just at the BLM adoption in Ocala, FL on 2-5-12 and had two "wild" mustang geldings licking my hands and one of them had me scratching his itchy ears and mane. They approached me very quickly and wanted to be friends. If I actually was in a position to adopt horses (not yet) I'd have taken them both without the slightest hesitation. They were practically begging me to take them. Heck, I'd have taken the whole family group in that pen if I had the resources.
Some are rank, some not.. Get one that has run as a stud for a few years, cut his balls off and see how much he likes humans. Some just have a little more survival fight in them. You picked a sweet one. We've had a few, saddled the first day, but one would charge across all teeth and pinned ears for a couple of weeks. We didn't get to pick ours, they selected them for us for Mustang Challenge. Good pick!
@EquineAcquisitions Most likely he is against putting a bit in an untrained horses mouth. It's a bad idea no matter what type it is. The foreign sensation of a piece of metal in his mouth could lead to them suddenly pulling hard making the bit hurt their mouth. That could lead to the horse panicking and forming a life long aversion to bits. I can see that the lead is attached to the halter but I would still question the wisdom of putting a bit in the horses mouth that early.
@hansberrylovesyoux3 he is 14.2 ish.. I haven't measured him lately I really should. :D There were taller ones / shorter ones etc. That is the great thing about going to the facility to adopt. They have all shapes / sizes / ages.
Lol , I have 2 Mustangs i adopted , had Velvet leading within a day , but alot more problems than what you had , but up to date I have been riding her now , never bucked , bit , crow hopped etc. So proud of her ,Beautiful horse =) I dont know why people spread rumors about how awful Mustangs are
@LilHollyIsDaBomb Rumors spread out of ignorance. Personally I think with ANY horse, there can be ones that are just going to be difficult to train. It's the gentling process that can be difficult. Once they are gentle...they should be treated like any other horse. Recently we purchased a "wild" yearling quarter filly. She was a lot worse than Tabasco to gentle and she had registration papers :D
We just adopted a 1 yr old filly from Nevada. I was honestly expecting an animal that would likely tear my barn down... but once we got her home, I found that she was SUPER sensible. I could totally see this happening on day one. Kudos to you for adopting your gorgeous boy! To those who think that BLM is scetchy, do you understand that with too many horses on the land, it would be stripped of resources and a considerable number of wild horses would starve?! Maybe that would be more humane....
No..I did double check with the BLM. He was unhandled however he would have become familiar with people during the two years he was at the holding facility. He as a VERY social personality which probably helped. He loves to be petted / played with.
LOL...your certainly entitled to you opinion...however I don't really know how I miraculously hacked youtube to show an upload date of Aug 11, 2009..the same day all my adoption paperwork is signed...maybe I should go work for the CIA instead..and f course I'm not sure of the horse..I only just got him..why get comfortable and get hurt?
Actually...yes I did. Picked him up in the AM..filmed that..Then filmed the rest after work in the PM. My skills were not all learned day 1..that took 15 years.. and this was certainly not day 1 of his life..cause he's three...but all footage was shot on the first day I had him, which is the day I picked him up. :)
I really don't think so. The way you carry yourself suggests that you're not as confident as you say you are. You're not bad, but I don't believe you're on a level to make that amount of progress in one day. I think this is just a little exaggeration for the sake of marketing. BTW, does that first day include driving back to CA from NV? If it does, you must have made this amount of progress in more like a half day. Impressive! lol.

Oh, I guess Ridgecrest is in CA. I admit to being wrong there, but I'm still skeptical. Nothing personal. It's just that there are a lot of ridiculous claims in the horse business and I saw how wild that horse was. If you can really get that kind of change in one day you need to be doing clinics and becoming the next Stacey Westfall. I don't see it though. You seem to be uneasy with the horse, and I don't think you could inspire that confidence in him when you're scared yourself. *shrugs*

I think, unless they lost their herd or got injured, it is cruel to snatch them out of Nevada. But he was lost, so that makes sense
