The CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA wanted NOTHING to do with the North and legally seceded like the founding fathers agreed would happen. Thomas Jefferson even said secession was good. So if he said blacks were equally to those of whites at the time. He would have done political suicide and not have been elected. Polititons want to get elected. Shermans march was a way to end the war quickely, for the masses. Also most great leaders have done terrible things. Clinton Waco, JFK Bay of Pigs, FDR Executive Order 9066, Andrew Jackson trail of tears. Can I go on? The point is that there are worse leaders of the time. Lincoln did the best he could in his power. @1990PatMorrison I live in Charleston. You don't know anything about Lincoln. The purpose of the fort was for collecting taxes. Lincoln sent in reinforcements to force Charleston to take action. Lincoln then suspended Congress for 3 months while he raised an army to invade, rape, and pillage the south back into submission....Nice try though.

Of course it was a rebellion. What else was it? Mexico, Siam and other nations at the time was helping Lincoln sustain the nation. Brining the states under one banner made it so that it was easier to defend. The Confederate President had to beg for more money and troops which lead to their down fall.

Yes he abolished harbos corpus, threw in jail suspected prisoners, spent unauthorized money. But that is what the president has in his power during times of emergency. It states it in the consitution under Artical two. Look it up. Pluse he was ill most of his life, family dying or going insane, along with the country falling apart.
