Eric Bogle-the version of the man, himself-and there are a few others that are really great-this is basically ok-Dropkick Murphys version is not so good.
For me this is the best version of this song. Probably because it's the one I heard first...and then? I honestly think Men They Couldn't Hang's version is the most melodic of all the versions out there.
@Asmoharg I agree, I've heard the Dropkick Murphys version and I just love this one because you can really picture lots of WWI in the way the song is played. I've always thought this song should play after a large massacre in a war movie.
I remember being in Stan Brennan's record shop when he played this and Stan's mate Tom (who wrote Navigator) asking Cush what had happened to his voice...
The greatest anti war song that also pays tribute to the bravery...a thin line...also the finest version of the song that is out there. Eric Bogle is a genius as a song writer.
ahh wow nice one the skiprat,i used to follow these back in the day, themselves and the pogues used to always be on the same bill, around the irish pubs in london, before they both had cut a record, memories thanks mate !!!!!
