can those (beeping) drivers wait a few seconds before moving. It's not that hard. I cited someone for not stopping when a crossing guard is helping the kids cross safely. For one thing, if you are not crossing but standing on the street, it really confuses the driver whether he or she should go or not which can cause an accident.
This isn't just a problem with crossing guards, it's a problem everywhere. People frequently blow through marked crosswalks (where there's no stop sign) when pedestrians are waiting to cross. I've almost been hit once in a crosswalk when one car tried to get around another car stopping for me.
I was in the military and in military bases cross walks are clearly marked with white lines perpendicular to the road line. We MUST YIELD each time there are potential person crossing. Why do we do that? Because it is the law! What are the penalty fro breaking it you might ask? ANSWER: a possible loss of your driving privileges, deduction in pay, loss or rank or loss of job. Now that'll teach them!
I think this whole thing is for safety issue BUT FOR CRYING OUT LOUD! doesn't these kids know how to cross on their own? In japan a 6 year old crosses the street on their own, are you telling me that these young adults do not know how to cross the street on their own? COME ON! Let our kids have some responsibilities so they don't grow up irresponsible. Soon they will become the driver them selves who will not STOP because they were not taught responsibility. TEACH THEM AND THEY WILL LEARN!
she's just a shitty crossing guard in my opinion. She yells all the way across the intersection for them to cross @ 1:15...she should be in the middle of the intersection directing traffic properly.
Thanks for posting this video. I'm a crossing guard and have these problems every day. I have to report so many drivers to the police for driving through my sign.
@anything59 Yes I recall those days but now as a crossing guard my self I know that crossing guards have to be very responsible people because they protect the lives of Children and pedestrians. Most children are not responsible enough to perform well at this job simply because the way traffic is today. With my company ACMS (All City Management Services) you need to be atleast 16 years of age to guard any site (i think) and most of the Guards that I know of are older the 25.
@JimexJimex Exactly. I have been to many school intersections as a crossing guard that needed atleast two crossing guards to help kids cross safely. Sometimes I wish there were others there to help out but to no avail.
There are just WAY too many cars on this road. What engineers don't understand is that widening the road doesn't make better traffic.
To have 2 lanes on a road and let people change lanes all the time actually makes the whole traffic pattern SLOWER. When you can't switch lanes on a bridge / tunnel, you actually go FASTER.
@JimexJimex That has got to be the stupidest comment ever. So, you think one lane is faster than two lanes? WTF are you thinking? In my city, on my way to work, we have two roads that used to be one lane. It was a nightmare. Now, there are two lanes going each direction and traffic has improved dramatically on both of these streets. My commute time has improved by about 10 minutes. It may not seem like much, but that is half the time it took before. Where do you people come up with this shit?
That's funny that you say that. I'm a crossing guard and I had to call the police because drivers were not stopping at the stop sign. The road was under construction and the road was closed. Drivers entered the road even though it was closed. The cop came and even with him standing on the road with his car in clear site, drivers still attempted to drive through the DO NOT ENTER signs. Some not even stopping at the stop sign.
I was with ship's security for the USS Ronald Regan and the command would have us do crossing guard duty in the morning when about 3,000 sailors would show up within a 1 hour time frame. Everyone drove down the same road, right in front of the pier, to get to parking, then they'd come back to cross. The drivers were the walkers, and the drivers would STILL act like idiots! It was scary sometimes. People I worked with would flip out, or get timid but I managed so they had me do it daily.
Doing crossing guar duty I realized though having a person there helps the flow of traffic, but somehow, makes drivers think they can get away with stuff they wouldn't pull with just a stop sign. I proved it one day by just standing off to the side and not crontrolling traffic. Drivers became more self conscious, didn't make stupid moves, and drove safer with the pedestrians. What I'm saying is, traffic guards DO HELP with the TRAFFIC FLOW, but if SAFETY is the concern, the guards need to go.
I've noticed intersections flowing smoother when the power (i.e. traffic lights) goes out - as you said, everyone suddenly becomes more self conscious.
I would pay for the guns and ammo. I see this all the time in school zones. Just this morning I saw one driver just drive through a Stop sign in front of St. Cecilia on Vicente, at full speed too...
we have crossing gaurds and san francisco state, the oppisite happens, i see a lot of pedestrains ignoring the cross gaurds to run across traffic to catch the bus. surprisingly i notice all the cars listen to the cross gaurds.
Training to be a crossing guard? Give me a fucking break.

@soccernerd200 Do you want someone who has no idea what they are doing walking your child accross a street with people who don't know how to drive?

I actually have a police department issued badge to be a crossing guard and am considered a special police officer.
Most of the crossing guards in my my jurisdiction are older than God.
LadyOfMaine 1 year ago
This crosswalk is also to big to have only 1 guard. If there are 3 to 4 guards standing right in the drivers' way, they will not proceed.

@rebelnomo
I'm not talking about the NUMBER of lanes. I'm talking about people changing lanes aggressively and unnecessarily making people slow down.
Have you gone over any major 4 lane bridges where you cannot change lanes? The flow is much better.
JimexJimex 7 months ago
That's why we install traffic light instead of hiring crosswalk guards all over the country. (that's a LOT of job opportunities!)
JimexJimex 3 years ago
I'll bet they wouldn't drive like that if a police car was there.
