I believe americans feel they are lacking culture today because-there is no TIME to create anything innovative. everyone is to busy trying to pay of their debt. You need TIME and NEW ways of thinking to create a new rainbow of thought and way of life. People are too sick too tired too in debt. Period. Culture is created by using what one has around the house and not what one is spoonfed day in and day out from the media.

America at one time did have a foundation of culture with strictly European roots. He is right about the consumerist/entertainment appeal. America used to be an extension of Western civilization, with its own composers, architects, painters, and (decent) writers. Now everything has degenerated to cheap thrills and mainstream racket that is forgotten about as quickly as it was excreted.
