@arbiterthewolf They could swing sideways. (I'm not saying that I believe that a munchkin hung himself, I really don't give a flying fuck, the movie sucks anyways, if it is true that's probably why he hung himself.)
1 how could they train a bird to fly at that position in time.
The scarecrow tripped as he saw the Hanging munchikin
DO U EVEN KNOW THE STROY?
There was a man so obsessed about the job so he applied for it they said oh no you dont have the part.
he was so angry/ashamed he went onto the set and hung him self at that scene because it was a straight camera shoot So he could be seen. They later on removed the hanging munkin in the colour one!
@lewynuke1000 The story is total bs, no such death was ever reported to the lapd. I have the original vhs and it has the bird. The hanging video is an edited hoax, I know this because part of the bird appears from nowhere in it. Watch 'clear proof the hanging mucnhkin video is fake' its amusingly obvious once you spot it
It is a midget hanging himself. But the new version on DVD they changed it to a bird. But in the original movie I couldnt delete the scene due to low budget cuts
This is what I know (until I have further information). Until the VHS tape version came out, no one noticed the shadow of what looked like a body swinging back and forth far in the distance. When the DVD version came out, someone had digitally altered that image with a bird that moved, lifting its wings. So there appear to be at least two versions. I've seen both, one of them at three different speeds (the creepiest thing I've ever seen) which really did look like a dead little person in a tree.
@NeuroticBarista the very original one was 1932, color was not back then, in the original 1932 Wizard of Oz there was an actual hanging from there on out it was just a bird,
@lewkynuke, eve though it was indoor, birds were brought from a zoo to make it seem more realistic
and @stephanie8701usher then didnt realize it until it was too late and tried to cover it up
@stephanie8701usher Because that's the only way to validate a ridiculous, adolescent rumour that a Munchkin hanged himself on set. AND they left it in the final cut. Why the hell not...!?
Make sense? OF COURSE NOT!! Logic, reason, and rational thought have NO PLACE in such things.
"A MUNCHKIN HANGED HIMSELF ON SET, GOD DAMNIT! LOOK, YOU CAN SEE IT RIGHT THERE WHERE THERE'S A BIRD STRETCHING HIS WINGS."
Borrowed them from the zoo nearby, wanted to make the INDOOR set look more realistic. In the scene right before this one you can see a peacock wandering around in the background.
Also, why is this in black and white? There was no black and white version of this movie - it's always been in color except for the beginning and the end.
Watch that. It's clearly a bird throughout the entire scene!! He bobs his head when they're at the front of the road, then spreads his wings when they travel down it.
First. When Dorothy opened the door to OZ the movie became color. The first twenty minutes were in black and white. Once that door opened and the color hit. It was the first movie to be filmed in color. Although Gone with the wind was released first. But, Wizard took longer in post production so it came out a month or two later. It was NEVER black and white through the whole movie. Just the begining and the end.
@sincerelyselena Lol, I agree, a midget did hang himself, but later in the movie. The ghost was fucking weird. And they just brought a trained bird in from the zoo.
You can clearly see the person standing on something then jumping off and swings side to side while hanging...wow I wonder why did they commit suicide in this film? o.O
look above the chimney. this video doesnt show it well but thats where the munchkin got hanged. This has been edited out of the colored one. The one in the background is a bird which is why it never got edited out.
Umm.. Dudes and ladies.. At first I thought it was a guy committing suicide but if it was then he wouldn't just swing back n forth ONCE!! then I looked real closely and I saw two wings spreading outward n something settling down... So everyone go back a watch the video and and try to imagine a bird spreading both it's wings n situating itself a little (I saw something move that appeared to be in front if the tree)...
its not suppose to be a munchkin hanging himself. the man that was originally casted to play the role of the tin man found out that he was not going to be able to play the part because he was allergic to the "tin" paint. so they cast another person for the role. the man who was supposed to be the tin man was watching there watching them shoot the movie and while on set got upset and hung himself. what you see in the background is suppose to be the shadow of the original hanging himself
@SlitMouthWoman you don't have to be so rude. that is just what i have always heard. i have never heard anyone say that it was a munchkin hanging himself. thats just dumb
@LoMejorDeCruzAzul Supposedly its a ghost. But, its not proven and no one seems to care since all they care about is the hanging munchkins that aren't there.
Whats the figure that appears then disapears quickly righ at the end on the road,im not saying its the ghost of the so called hanged munchkin but it looks like one
I like the little ghosty thing in the road much more than the bird lol it is a bird in the color version you can totlaly tell its a birdy but in the begining with glenda you can see one hanging

We should all create sun glasses and ear plugs from tin foil as well.
OK NOW I HAVE TO SAY THIS PPL. I TOO BELEIVED IT WAS A BIRD, BUT I READ SOMEWHERE THAT THE SUICIDE WAS NOT DENIED OR CONFIRMED BY WORKERS. LET ME SAY THIS... I SAW THIS IN COLOR I SEE A BIRD. YOU SEE THE BIRD, BUT TO THE RIGHT YOU SEE THE SUICIDE-HOWEVER NOT IN THIS VERSION-ITS BEEN EDITED. LOOK ELSEWHERE.
but there is a hung munchkin in this scene. its above the house. search "Hanging Munchkin in Wizard of Oz, read the description." the original black and white video with this title shows it closely.
now tht ive seen the other vids it mite be a bird but my music teacher actually met a loli pop boy( i SWEAR) from the original film n he asked him bout the situation n he said "wasnt suppossed to talk about it" so if they didnt hang themselves something def. happened on the set!!
I used to beleive it was a guy hanging, till someone pointed out all the parts of the bird. Now i see it as a bird all the time and wonder what the hell i was thinking.lol.
The film's always been in color (this clip was just decolorized, for w/e reason)...why would they leave a hanging body in a film? Not like they couldn't afford to reshoot.
this scene is a bird, and yes it is a big flamingo or ostrich, the makers of the movie brought it to the set, but this is only one of the 6 alleged hanging sites, and if u ask me the one at the munchkin village looks the best and creepiest!
actually your correct on the dvd realease tehy edited teh midget to make it look like it was a bird becasue by the time the movie was out they didnt notice it
No is the munchkin in the newer colored version looks different from this because they edited it to make it look like a bird but its really the munchkin
You guys really think they would replace a scene of a hanging munchkin with an exotic bird? How do you suppose they did that? They didn't have digital editing back then. They would have to reshoot the entire scene. Wouldn't it be easier to cut those few seconds out entirely?
Also, there is only one Oz movie. There aren't any different versions.
According to snopes, to give the set a more outdoor-type of feel, they borrowed several exotic birds of different sizes from the L.A. zoo. You can see them in the movie wandering around the tinman's shack.
The bird everyone wants to think is a dead munchkin is either an emu or a crane.
The Wizard of Oz is one of the most well known movie classics of all time. Almost everyone has seen it, so of course there are bound to be rumors. One, in particular, is the hanging theory -- the urban legend that either a midget or stagehand hanged themselves on film. The question is, what really happened? While most agree that it is in fact false, some still argue that the hanging was real.
I have researched this segment and saw a documentary about it and the "hanging" munchkin was not actually a realsuicide , it was a stage hand that fell out of the tree during filming, the company didnt have enough money to reshoot the sequence.
If this documentary actually does exist, they didn't do their research...this was MGM, one of the biggest studios in Hollywood, they certainly could've afforded to reshoot the scene, considering they'd already done so for several others.
its an Emu but it does look from a distance like it could be a hanging munchkin but that its olny where the emu is moving around and flexing its wings
I always thought it was just the witch stalking them, lurking in the background. I think that was the intention. There's no way they could miss something that obvious during editing.
They def had the money...this was MGM, one of the biggest studios in Hollywood, and this scene was actually a reshoot...not a wk earlier, their first attempt @ doing so had to be scrapped when it was realized the Tin Man didn't have "rust" on his face/costume like he was supposed to.
They had the money, but weren't going to edit out a bird for the fear that rumors might circulate decades later. The munchkin actors wouldn't have even been present on the MGM lot. They were not even being filmed yet. (This scene was filmed before the munchkin scene).
actually, I found out they have actual proof it was a bird. they said they added birds (given to them by some sort of zoo) to give the indoor set more of an outdoor effect. so it is obviously a bird.
There is a bird in this clip...but it is in the forrest on the left...not on the footpath. Something does appear on the footpath for a split second. But this could also be a mark on the film...a blooper that wasn't caught.
Can u spot 8 ghost of a heads/faces on the trees. Zooms it. I'm good eyes. Looks like real to me. And pause 0:11 or 0:12 if u see white flash on the yellow brick road when they left the road. On DVD in colour, u can't see the ghost flash on the road.
What bothers me about these "myth busting" wizard of oz videos is that everyone posting these uses the DVD version. If anyone has an original VHS, it is clearly not a bird. It is instead what looks like a wooden horse, and something swinging back and forth in front of it. So of course there won't be any ghost or hanging person, because they edited it out.
There is no "original version"...I have a VHS copy from 1989, and the scene looks exactly the same as it did in later releases (save for later audio/visual resoration).
pause the video at :10 and then keep pushing pause and play or just play it through a few times and look right in the middle of the yellow brick road does it look like a ghost to you?
how could anyone mistake the bird for a person, and it's not a fake bird, it is seen earlier in the movie in thr background

and plus if you can see it so clearly here then the directors and actors and everyone would of noticed it ! :P

its called esiting the movie after peopl saw it they prbley cut it out on the color one
socomseed 2 years ago
editing da movie.. not esiting
tata19511 2 years ago
The film's always been in color (this clip was just decolorized, for w/e reason)...why would they leave a hanging body in a film? Not like they couldn't afford to reshoot.
WhatsAYak 2 years ago
this scene is a bird, and yes it is a big flamingo or ostrich, the makers of the movie brought it to the set, but this is only one of the 6 alleged hanging sites, and if u ask me the one at the munchkin village looks the best and creepiest!
YourMindOnDrugz 2 years ago
actually your correct on the dvd realease tehy edited teh midget to make it look like it was a bird becasue by the time the movie was out they didnt notice it
Militarymight101 2 years ago
No is the munchkin in the newer colored version looks different from this because they edited it to make it look like a bird but its really the munchkin

can someone explain what's at 0:12? pause it, there is a figure that pops up and disappears.
ReitannaSeishin 2 years ago
haha yeah seriously what is that?
calicagogal 2 years ago
if you pause the video at that part it looks like a man-like ghost..........hmmmmm
METALLITACK 2 years ago
Yeah, that ghost is creepy.
However, it is just a blip on the film. It is not present in the colour versions because of of the colour techniques.
Moseslawgiver 2 years ago
You guys really think they would replace a scene of a hanging munchkin with an exotic bird? How do you suppose they did that? They didn't have digital editing back then. They would have to reshoot the entire scene. Wouldn't it be easier to cut those few seconds out entirely?
Also, there is only one Oz movie. There aren't any different versions.
moondoogle 2 years ago
I never could figure out how that could be mistaken for a hanging midget. It's so obviously a bird spreading his wings.
moondoogle 2 years ago
yea its a bird but why the hell was there a random bird there?
xSONxOFxCALIFAS 2 years ago
According to snopes, to give the set a more outdoor-type of feel, they borrowed several exotic birds of different sizes from the L.A. zoo. You can see them in the movie wandering around the tinman's shack.
The bird everyone wants to think is a dead munchkin is either an emu or a crane.
moondoogle 2 years ago
dude thats a really big fucking bird then.

Exactly...sometimes people just don't consider the obvious.
WhatsAYak 2 years ago
When they shot this scene the munchkins weren't in town yet. also if you look close it is attached to the bird so it is the birds wing.
JessiRose2 2 years ago
what is a munchkin???
chichakrugebregt 2 years ago
earlier in the scene you actually see the bird as it walks over there
....so yes it is a bird

The Wizard of Oz Suicide Legend
The Wizard of Oz is one of the most well known movie classics of all time. Almost everyone has seen it, so of course there are bound to be rumors. One, in particular, is the hanging theory -- the urban legend that either a midget or stagehand hanged themselves on film. The question is, what really happened? While most agree that it is in fact false, some still argue that the hanging was real.

I have researched this segment and saw a documentary about it and the "hanging" munchkin was not actually a realsuicide , it was a stage hand that fell out of the tree during filming, the company didnt have enough money to reshoot the sequence.
sweeney280 2 years ago
If this documentary actually does exist, they didn't do their research...this was MGM, one of the biggest studios in Hollywood, they certainly could've afforded to reshoot the scene, considering they'd already done so for several others.

its an Emu but it does look from a distance like it could be a hanging munchkin but that its olny where the emu is moving around and flexing its wings

A deffinate bird . I cant believe people told me it was a munchkin. i would love to find out who started the rumor about this :)! so stupidd.
lilshortyx1025 2 years ago 8
@lilshortyx1025 the origional producers even said it was a person!
cookie22100 1 year ago
I always thought it was just the witch stalking them, lurking in the background. I think that was the intention. There's no way they could miss something that obvious during editing.
mrrubiks501 2 years ago
but they might not of had enough money to do it over. this was filmed during the great depression so if it were me I might of left it alone.
Dessmodus 2 years ago
They def had the money...this was MGM, one of the biggest studios in Hollywood, and this scene was actually a reshoot...not a wk earlier, their first attempt @ doing so had to be scrapped when it was realized the Tin Man didn't have "rust" on his face/costume like he was supposed to.
WhatsAYak 2 years ago
They had the money, but weren't going to edit out a bird for the fear that rumors might circulate decades later. The munchkin actors wouldn't have even been present on the MGM lot. They were not even being filmed yet. (This scene was filmed before the munchkin scene).
MattBronsil 2 years ago
actually, I found out they have actual proof it was a bird. they said they added birds (given to them by some sort of zoo) to give the indoor set more of an outdoor effect. so it is obviously a bird.

There is a bird in this clip...but it is in the forrest on the left...not on the footpath. Something does appear on the footpath for a split second. But this could also be a mark on the film...a blooper that wasn't caught.

i saw the ghost and i paused on 0:12 and caught it

Can u spot the ghost man's hand on the tree?
Losagirl1980 3 years ago
Can u spot 8 ghost of a heads/faces on the trees. Zooms it. I'm good eyes. Looks like real to me. And pause 0:11 or 0:12 if u see white flash on the yellow brick road when they left the road. On DVD in colour, u can't see the ghost flash on the road.

What bothers me about these "myth busting" wizard of oz videos is that everyone posting these uses the DVD version. If anyone has an original VHS, it is clearly not a bird. It is instead what looks like a wooden horse, and something swinging back and forth in front of it. So of course there won't be any ghost or hanging person, because they edited it out.
creepykirty 3 years ago
There is no "original version"...I have a VHS copy from 1989, and the scene looks exactly the same as it did in later releases (save for later audio/visual resoration).
WhatsAYak 3 years ago
i've heard the same thing...maybe it's not even on vhs, maybe it was the real original, and they caught it before it went out? i don't know.

pause the video at :10 and then keep pushing pause and play or just play it through a few times and look right in the middle of the yellow brick road does it look like a ghost to you?
