@Ipad2Adventures it doesn't really matter what settings you use. Just remember to use the same resolution as original (720x480 ntsc or 720x576 pal), 29.97 fps on ntsc, 25 fps on pal. Maximum bitrate is 7000, I always used 6000 as far as I remember
THIS VIDEO LOOKS AMAZING, i have a question though, when i use my XL-1s it has a grain/mask like over it, it looks completely different than yours. am i recording or putting it on my comp. wrong?
Excuse me, I'm not intending to make any stupid question, I just want to know if this video you have made was shot with the default camera. Was it? I ask because I want to buy a XL-1, so please reply me! It's important to me to know if the camera I am about to buy is that good.
@Zecifer I have XL-1 and t2i now. They both are great cameras, the only thing that is bad about t2i is camera shake when filming without steady-cam stabilizer
@GoffFilms its a great camera but a not as great for its price, it shoots in 720x480p with no hd, yet i recommend a canon 5d/550d/t1i etc. strongly rexcommend the canon t1i its on ebay for 500$
@KyleMovieStudios cool, i also checked out t2i, I will buy that one from ebay, because people say that its video quality is better than t1i. EOS Rebel t2i can shoot 1080 HD video with native 24p frame rate what t1i cannot, but 720p resolution makes no big difference between both of them :) I think both models are great, but if I am planning to buy a new camera, better to buy best one I can afford, so it would still be good after 3-5 years :)
the video out here seems to be HD, even i owe one of this camera n interested in makin music videos with it due to its clarity n softness could any one write how can i convert my normal 16:9 video into HD 1080 should i hv to buy lens for it or is there any program to convert it to HD??? m really interested to know the answer plz do reply my note...
Hi. Your videos are awesome. I'm working with my Canon XL1 in parties, and editing in my Imac with FCP HD express. Usually I finish projects in 100 minutes length with 20 to 25 GB each. Good to make clear that FCP Express HD, do not includes Compressor. The thing is : If someone knows the proper settings in XL1 and FCP EXPRESS Pro HD to export MiniDV tapes and burn it in IDVD or BLUE RAY with Crystal clear results (or look alike) in a 52 inch plasma HD 1080, I will be very happy to read it.
In my town kids are selling there old XL's for around 650-850 in good to great condition. For me moving up from my sony 1000 to the Xl is a training for the higher up cams that are around 5000 today and will be more reasonably priced in a year
how do you get the film lens effect?? i have a canon xl1s just wanted to know how, thanks....also can you help me at all with this...when i film weddings sometimes the focus goes in and out constantly, can you please help me if you can, thanks again.
@Dinobot2468 Yes. 28 Days Later was filmed entirely on one of these. Great camera! I almost bought one, but instead went with a Sony PDX10. Wish I had gotten one of these.
@ninmachine109 not just this camera, that "look" is achieved via several aspects during production and post production such as colour correction, lens, lighting etc
Great video. Just got a Canon XL1 and I used this video to help me make my mind up. I'm going to add something to my stock setup though, and just thought I would share it to help other XL1 users.
UV/Protector filter. It's a must. Not only will it protect your lens from damage, but also protects from UV rays which make outdoor photographs/film hazy and indistinct. I will be going for the Hoya HD range, as they are newer and have the edge on the older non-HD Hoya range.
Forgive my ignorance, but I'm getting back into video after 20 years and my last professional camera use was three quarter inch! how does the quality of the XL1 stack up to the average theater screen? Also, what is the best Mini DV to use as a tape transfer deck to a PC?
hay how did you get it to fit the screen so well, as in from edge to edge rather than it being small in the centre and having black all around the edges? is it an option on youtube? thank you
Nice work. I've got a Canon XL1 and I'm having real issues with the clarity of the image. It's coming out very blurry and I can't seem to get the manual focus right. I can sit and play with the focus for five minutes and not get a clear shot. Your focus shifts are so precise, how do you do it?!
@flibberdajibbet when you focus, zoom in completely, focus and then zoom completely out, if focusing on a person then zoom into their eye and focus until you see the glint in their eye then zoom out
One question. Is this the XL1's standard lens? I'm thinking of getting one and this is exactly the look I need for films...need to know what kind of lens I need if any.
For this video I used standart lens. Actually I don't know much about these things, but 35mm adapter gives you a real film look effect. Type in google. There are also many videos in YouTube how to build 35mm adapter by yourself
i must say man, you did a great job, i just wish you could explain step by step how you did this( just the settings and how you rendered it out) lol i'm only 15 sorry for all the questions, nice job :)
Standart camera settings: DV PAL, 720x576, 25p. I shot the scenes with automatic white balance, and auto exposure, used manual focusing. Went home, imported everything into the Sony Vegas, did some color correction (contrast, brightness, levels, sharpen e.t.c.), then rendered it as MPEG2 video, 720x400, 25p, bit rate: 1500 or 2000 kbps. (I always use these settings before uploading my videos) Then I uploaded it in YouTube. The look doesn't depend on rendering settings, it depends on the camera
bc i am about to get a canon xl1 and i was wondering what do i put the settings for capturing and what are some tips on capturing so i can edit it. :D nice video btw.
hmmmm did you just put the premiere output settings to 1280 by 720 when you rendered it out? and i know you added the bars......or did you just stretch it out.....hmmm i'm thinking lol
Are ypu using a special lens for the camera or color correction at all? I would love to get this kind of feeling with an XL1 but I'm not sure of how to approach it.
How would you recommend uploading video to youtube using this camera. As far as choosing a file format and frame rates?

XL1 was a great camera.
T2is suck as main cameras, they are best suited for specialized tasks like low light or shallow depth of field shots.
If you want a cheap all-purpose video camera check out the Panasonic TM900.

The look doesn't depend on rendering settings, it depends on the camera

is your canon better than the hv30 ??? is the cinema look better ?

I think the HV 30 is a little bit better because of function to shoot in 24p mode. But the XL1's optics are better than hv30's.
Brutalexecution 2 years ago
so which has the better cinema look ? the one with the 24p or the one with the better optics ?
