I am a mining engineer and I work with new start up mines every day. The mining industry of today takes the safety and preservation of the environment very seriously. We are an industry full of outdoor enthusiasts. i am involved with evaluating this project from a 3rd party prospective and can tell you without a doubt the impact to the environment and fishery will be non-existent. Why don't we instead think about the jobs it will create and the standard of living it will benefit?
@mxworld125 yeah, and how long would those jobs last for? I'm sorry, I don't want to be rude, but those jobs will only last until we've sucked out all the minerals from bristol bay and polluted the streams. And sure, the copper is worth lots of money, but tell me how much of that money is going to go to Alaskans. Not enough, if any. I've watched that film, as well as tons of commercials from both pro- and anti-pebble groups, and i would bet 5,000 dollars that pebble will hurt the environment.
If you are a mining engineer with facts about modern mining and not a person with very little knowledge that is speaking from sentiment please weigh in on this subject either way, yea or nay.
Please do not build this mine... common sense says it's a terrible idea! National Resrouces Defense Council (NRDC.org) has some good ways the average person can contribute to fighting this.
Good video, I own it as well as Running Down the Man and Eastern Rises. All three are incredibly well done. It's so sad that most humans care about humans and nothing else. If we could just get over having material...rather than piece of mind. On another note, anyone know the song opening the trailer?
@newpointman The mine is in a terrible spot. It would be located right on the Nushagak river and frying pan lake would be destroyed. How is that acceptable?
This will be a disaster....Please don't do this...it's common sense....why do we as humans have to conquer everything and destroy this land.....leave it alone...
Once again,a big corporation lying through its teeth for the almighty $. As a citizen of West Virginia, I can tell you that mining absolutely destroys watersheds for not only animals, but people as well. 100% against this mining project.
@chrystallica I am not for the mine, but I don't see much wrong with the Columbia and Snake rivers. I catch tons of salmon out of the Columbia and I catch incredible Sturgeon in both. They are also used to haul cargo on. What is your opinion of what is wrong with those rivers? Just curious and not combative,
@chrystallica if you can please explain to me how we can move the entire deposit of necessary minerals for the continuation of the standard of living that you currently enjoy to another location please share. You may have the answer to all of our problems. Otherwise, these minerals are vital to our civilization and the extraction of them can and will be done in a manner that does no harm to the environment. The science proves contrary to your statement.
Really? You can not actually be serious that open pit mining doesn't impact water quality. What happens when the overburden washes into the rivers, clouding the water with suspended sediments and choking out fish? What happens when the inevitable acid mine drainage seeps into the river? Let us at least be honest about the potential benefits and trade offs of having a mine located in a salmon-rich watershed.
The fishing contributes to the economy.Local and national. The mine will benefit only the mining company and it's shareholders. Those who grub gold and money do not contribute much at all to the economy.
WELCOME TO WHAT WILL BE CALLED THE LARGEST ECOLOGICAL DISASTER IN MODERN HISTORY!!!!!!! This Pebble MIne makes me sick, and sad to be a human being, everyone needs to see just how beautiful this area is.... absolutely precious..... Fucking money man, people will sell their sole for fucking stupid money.
I am open to the debate on a prospective Pebble Mine, but this video does not satisfy that. This video plays off pure emotion with no intelligent rebuttal to the proponents or even defense of the opposition. We should keep in mind when listening to such propaganda, often from outsiders, that anti-development sentiments are anti-Alaskan.
The failed ballot measure 4 had no mention of Pebble Mine. It applied to mines universally. It was an environmentalist-wacko fraud. One of many.
As someone who has been born and raised in Alaska, I would have to challenge the ridiculous statement that "anti-development sentiments are anti-Alaskan." Such blanket statements show a lack of understanding about the complexity of modern development and the trade-offs that results from such activities. Oh ya, and speaking of propaganda from outsiders, Pebble Mine developers are actually Canadian (Northern Dynasty Minerals Ltd.) and British (Anglo American) firms. Wonder where the $ will go?
The point of the post was not that Alaskan workers will not receive some share of the revenue generated by the mine. Obviously they will. The post was challenging previous statements that "anti-development sentiments are anti-Alaskan" and that outsider conversationalists are meddling in our state politics. My point is that many people in Alaska also oppose the development and that the Canadian and British firms that seek to develop the mine don't necessarily have our interests in mind.
Well, if that if how you see it, we did have a vote on it. I voted against prop 4 (which thank God, failed) because it would have effected the entire industry. The words "pebble mine" were not in the initiative so it was another one of many dishonest fights by these annoying statists that want to turn Alaska into the San Francisco of the north.
For the people who want different economic opportunities, move some where else. There are plenty of cess pools in the lower 48 they can move to. Why do they want to make such a beautiful area just another one of those.
As a commercial fisherman in Bristol Bay, I can't believe that any Alaskan would ever think about jeopardizing the fishery out here. We have to say NO! Northern Dynasty is a corporate juggernaut, and they've lied, cheated, and paid off a lot of people just to get to their current place in the Pebble Project. We have to draw the line somewhere. Please raise your voice.
Why do big corporations always want to distroy the enviroment? There are no other places for this operation to set up?spend the money to look elseware and leave Alaska alone...

Mr. Northern Dynasty needs to take his mine elsewhere. Bottom line.
Look at all the science behind what open pit mining does to watersheds and then use your common sense.
We must learn from the harsh lessons the Columbia, Snake, and other great rivers defiled have taught us or we will lose so much.

@bernerl - BP is British, yet Alaska reaps tons of money from their employees on the slope. Don't think about economics as a zero-sum game.
Did you ever see the Fairbanks Daily News Miner column about Pebble Mine a month or two ago? If not, I could see if I could send it to you.
Americaisgreat123 2 years ago
I have not seen the article in the Daily News Miner, though would be happy to take a look at it if you send a link.
