Thank you for this...I studied this for my A level project back in the late seventies and had a lot of help from my big brother Peter Lucas who was studying music at Oxford at the time and helped me a lot as he was and is a bit brilliant when it comes to understanding this genre of wonderful music. I don't know alot about this kind of music, but the way it plays out at the beggining is very familiar.

The first two lines are:

Gloria in excel Deo.

Et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis.

English Translation:

Glory to God on the Highest.

And on earth peace to men of good will.

I'm not suprised that is sounds familiar, because music like this and especially the phrase, "Gloria in excel Deo." Besides in churches, it is often heard in movies/TV.
