how can i know if i got mercury on my body? when i was in mexico i used to play with mercury, i used to put on my hand, in mexico they sell mercury in pendants,
that is something to think about you get the mercury from those switchs on your hands it can make you sick some whear in CFLs thare not is much to make you sick
I think better are using linear tubes (but not "Alto" or similar crap) - for the same (or even less) amount of mercury they give way more light for way longer and with not as much power input, with nearly no fire hazard (compare to these CFL's) - so for the same lumens you have way less mercury, way less maintenance and fire risk, less electricity usage and mostli wider selection of better quality color rendition (except those cheapest "basic" versions)...
I have those bulbs and they save alot of juice. They even have the 1.5 watt LEDs on ebay, I just bought them and they are great. Not as bright as my 9watt CFL but dont use as much as those old 75watters i had before.Keep the videos coming and (dont get hurt).
Sure that's alot of mercury but how often do we break thermostats compared to light bulbs? I've probably broken a hundred or so bulbs in my life but I've never broken a thermostat.
@GunManOsh How the hell do you break hundreds on accident, are you retarded?Power plants spit out mercury. I assume you do breathe air. Less energy production equals less mercury in the environment overall. I also assume you're smart enough not to eat mercury thermometers. If you do break a CFL bulb, don't stick your face in the plume and breathe deeply.
What function do the mercury vials in the prehistronic thermostat have? Are they rectifiers from a time when inexpensive semiconductor rectifiers for high currents were not yet available?
It functions as a switch and also in a way that it adds some hysteresis to the thermostat's bi-metal element. Without hysteresis, your AC or heater would go on and off with just very slight changes in temperature.
my house still has a round mercury thermostat and mercury tilt light switches. I replaced a few of them and took one apart and found out there was a metal vial with mercury inside. I didnt take apart the vial I just shook it and felt the mercury moving inside.
None of the ones I have had caught fire yet. I usually buy the better quality ones. I've been having pretty good luck with the Greenlite brand CFL that I showed here.
Avoid the brand "Lights Of America" or something you would get from a dollar store.
but you are aware of the fire issues? right? I mean we already have too many fire reports on those happening, even Canada fire department are on alert about it as I read an article, Not to mention the Air Raid Sirens forum showing one of the worst case. I wouldn't promote or recommend CFL. I would be more concerned about the fires, but mercury is an ADDITION...although it's a little less of the worry...but still..."fire risk + mercury" is something I don't want to be buying....
The one on the Air Raid Sirens forums that I also frequently post on actually happened to someone I know. (his screenname there is kx250rider and he is known as kx250rider661 on youtube)
It was a Lights of America brand CFL that caught fire in his case. I also posted his pictures on Candlepowerforums.
The last time I was over at Wailing Siren Ranch in Moorpark, I spoke with the owner's wife about the light fixture that the bulb was in and it turned out they had accidentally put the bulb in one of those mercury vapor yard lights so it was getting a higher voltage than normal from the MV ballast.
Do Sylvania 14 W CFL's with covers work well? Because one of them I have makes an annoying sound from the electronic ballast. No big problem, and heat is pretty low too.
So what you said is the bulbs, the thermostats and sneakers should ALL be banned. I concur!

Now, mercury thermostats are no longer available. As they start getting replaced, they're getting less and less common.
Something to keep in mind.

Look up "Mercury Tilt Switch"
It functions as a switch and also in a way that it adds some hysteresis to the thermostat's bi-metal element. Without hysteresis, your AC or heater would go on and off with just very slight changes in temperature.

@yuandrew why they dont use a iron ball inside, or they want to show off the amount of mercury?

Suspicious... although I think the paranoia is a little over the top. Mercury = a label.
