  • D I S C O M B A B U L A T E D ! ! !

  • Say it again!

  • After listening to this yesterday I said it was the dynamics and groupings that give the impression that he was playing more notes. It' s not. At the 4:05 mark he plays 16th notes, but in groups of 6(rlrlkk). That's not the pattern he introduced, nor is it any of the 3 versions he demonstrated. Then when he speeds up the tempo at 4:20 he goes to 16th note triplets, still playing rlrlkk, but fitting those 6 notes in to 1 beat. It's all cool stuff that should be taught, but it's just not what h

  • @seriously777 yea man, i thought i was goin crazy! nice one for breaking it down tho

  • Discombobulated... I like it!

  • Plis!!!!a camera for the kick!!!!!

  • Finally, lessons to learn Gospel chops!!!!thx God!!!!!

  • how do u get your foot so fast thats something ive been working on but its really hard

  • Of course it's gonna sound like dynamics if u add licks!!!

  • Lmbo he goes from a double stroke lick to a 6 toplet stroke... FAIL!!!

    1st: RLKK

    2nd:RLRLKK

    BWAHAHAHA!!!

  • @ectyka You're missing the point. First, just because the pattern goes to RLRLKK does not make it triplet. It's still phrased as 16th notes. As long as your strokes add up to 16, you're golden..... If you carry it 2 bars, just add up to 32, and so on.. He's not playing more strokes. At no point does he play triplets, and never plays 32nd notes. It just sound like it because of the dynamics and the groupings...

  • wow this is great. ive been trying to learn this "gospel" style by ear cus its so awesome and ive been really wanting to learn just single pedal. this just made the start simple i know exactly what to start practicing! thanks! and as always soultones are b.a

  • Good video. I think the key to being able to play gospel fills/licks is to constantly listen to them. Watch others play as much as possible. Steal their licks/ideas. Tap them out in public. Yes alot of it is simply practicing but theres a subconscious element to it aswell. A few months ago Gospel drumming for me was very difficult but ever since I have been living and breathing it and Ive found that it's not all that difficult! You've got to LOVE it with a passion if you want to nail it.

  • this is really a good lesson ... building blocks indeed .... the flaw in this video is tying all of them together ... i`m guessing most kids cannot figure out what you are doing to tie them all together ... a PDF with the individual exercises written out and then all of them tied together written out would greatly help ... besides that , a good video and a great start for cats who want to learn these types of chops

  • I think you have the term dynamics completely wrong...

  • @gedbangsdrums ... no he doesnt ... dynamics simply means louder / softer ... watch him again ..his " rock " version is un-dynamic ...that is to say , everything is at one volume level ... his " gospel " version is dynamic ..he plays the first group of 16ths louder than the 2nd group of 16ths ... the gospel version is indeed more dynamic because of the volume changes

  • Good stuff on dynamic playing. The problem i have is getting my right foot more dynamic... i seem to only be able to play at one level when I need to move that quick... or even slow! Tips? Or just keep plugging away?

  • That is incredible!

Since i've seen Jerohn Garnett play with Mariah Carey, i'm a huge fan of him as a drummer!!!

My god, he makes it sound so cool, ..single pedal y'all!

Question i have is, what sticks does Jerohn use?And what size?

Looks like Vic Firth lets say.3A?

  • guys, please explain to me what the term "gospel" mean?

  • Thank You this help i grew up playing in church and never took lesson but to learn these building blocks help me alot thank and very great job on the drums.

  • Thx.

  • Thanks man, this helped answer a lot of questions about gospel drummers and it also improved my drumming.

  • Nice hats by the way.

  • Wicked.

  • Thank you Jerhon for putting it out there so a four yr old can understand it! I'm surprised your name is not yet a household name because you are a Amazing!! Certified BEAST!! God Bless man and continue being a Blessing Dude!

  • Soultone is very under rated

  • excellent!

  • 6:15-6:20 utter genius!

  • this video is AWESOME! clear lesson, perceft process...

How do you practice dinamics on Bassdrum?

    Thanks M from Hungary

  • krlelelelelap! HAHAHA :)))) very funny! great help for my drumming

  • Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • SACKA-BOOM BEGA-BOOM ONE...... got it

  • Since when did "Dynamics" = "Adding More Strokes"?

  • @JohnJeevasingham ...it doesnt , and he didnt say that ... and he never added more strokes , he simply changed the hand / foot combination to tie the three gospel chops together

  • @JohnJeevasingham - Dynamics is not the same as "Adding More Strokes".

When he showed the difference between the Rock style and the Gospel Style, he was playing sixteenth notes in both of them...

That is the beauty of the "Accents" or "Dynamics" of the Gospel style, that makes you think that he is playing more notes. That is what makes it awesome.

  • When you said "accents" you changed it to 4 by 2, and didn't add accents to the 2 by 2. Love the video regardless, dont get me wrong.

  • I loved your lesson and all your "blablabla"

  • What's a gospel drummer?

  • @NathannRamirez Search Gospel Chops on here.

  • Rilll simpl

  • thank God for your gift men! appreciate it much!

  • @ 5:46 i was counting 1,2,3,4.... etc but you didnt end at 1!!! you ended at 4...

since you have a mic wrap around your head try to say 1 2 3 4 so you can know how to come IN on 1!!!

  • @Solo1DiosTerenal WOW!!! How do you count ? the fill ends at 1 :) No doubt about that

  • Great work, excellent lesson.....thank you sir!

  • Great video... the part about adding dynamics. You played a totally differnent part from the non dynamic part to the 'dynamic' part. Adding notes isn't being dynamic it's adding notes. Non dynamic part 16th note fill... 'dynamic' part is sixes (four notes on snare two on bass drum) Just wanted to point that out. GREAT chops though!

  • @Drumshoppro i was just wondering if someone else did notice that! Happends the same with the "end part" of the lick.

  • dynamics is diffence in volume in every stroke but this is a very great lesson i would watch this everyday

  • Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you

    You illuminate me! :)

I adore this style of drumming and this lesson focus on the very important detail!

  • you actually don't have to end on the one. You are great though, just pointing that out, haha

  • if you were to write out the dynamics, where would the accents go ??? I'd like to practice that lick slowly to build muscle memory so that I don't just play it robotically but have no idea what dynamics to practice. Can anyone help?

  • 6:16

  • I have been drumming for about 4 months now and so far you are the best instructor I have seen so far. The way you illustrate each chop/lick makes it very easy to understand and apply. Keep up the good work my brother.... Do you have any video that I can order online?

  • hey anybody can tell me how the kick part goes wen if he continues to double or wat?

  • amazing playing dude!! what is your bass drum technique? heel toe or slide technique? thanks

  • WOW. GOSPEL drummers changes how i see drumming in a totally new way. please teach us more! the SAME METHOD!!! :)

  • oh man thats amazing ! i play this licks often but always theres somthing missing with them(these dynamics your talking about) and always wonder why gospel drummers play with such a tasty way !! and i geuss a part of my problem is due to using double pedal do you recommend to play the licks with only one single pedal ?

    Thank you

  • what snare is that

  • @diseptacons123454321 DC California 13"x4" 5 ply maple w/red silver leaf finish

  • @soultonecymbal01 he sounds good!

  • Hey Soultone im a more of a rock drummer but this stuff is realy interesting and helpful i like this style alot thanks 4 da help

  • great drumming man.. very helpful for my drumming.. i just noticed one thing, your drum sounds so good but i didn't see any mics on it.. how does that happen?? how do you do that??

  • @rockanito Thanks!

There are 2 SM58 as over heads and one SM81 condencer mic in the front of the drums. That's it.

  • @soultonecymbal01 wow!! really nice work man, i should try that sometime.. haha!! cheers mate!!

  • @soultonecymbal01 room mics, as opposed to close miking everything, nearly always sound better to me.

  • @soultonecymbal01 my name is calvin I love your drumming man I'm a drummer and my solos are like not perfect. so can you make a video just for me so I can get my solos clean again. thanks

  • Good Stuff brugh. Thanks man our drummer gots to get busy

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH! i have learnt alot through your videos. my drumming has gone better :) you sir are my inspiration!

  • are you doing doubles with heel toe?

  • thats my cousin!!!!

  • Thanks so much for this lesson!!! Got alot out of it!

  • He know he need to b preachin

  • @mannyboy28 it sound like he preaching rite lol

  • if you guys dont hear the dynamics in his playing then you're fucking deaf

  • Great stuff man. One question, on that lick with the dynamics (1st example), do you actually play ghost notes on hands together with the bass drum?

  • Great insight! just didnt hear any dynamics>>>

  • Motivation's rising inside of me!! nice video soultonecymbal01. Helped me a lot.

  • "one drastic, to the next drastic" lol. extreme maybe?

  • taught me so much!! keep doing your thing!! post more vids please!!

  • You are great!!

  • Svaka chast ljudno!

  • It's a shame the fourth lesson never came out

  • added dynamics and a whole lot more notes.. nice chops though.

  • just a dumb question .. but when did "linear drum fills " change their name to "gospel chops" .. steve gadd and john bohnam aren't gospel drummer and they've been using similar hand foot combinations forever .. just throwing it out there

  • @shadowlorde good explanation of how to play it though

  • this is fantastic broooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!! ♥

  • Wow... great teacher and awesome instructional video.

  • at first you explain the lick RLKK. after that you talk about dynamics but i think you play another lick RLRRLLKK? Is ths right?

  • Comment removed

  • so of you guys need to go to drum corp to get a real accurate definition of dynamics

  • Mann, my computer keeps chopping up on the little extra things... was the pattern (starting with the left hand) LKLRKK???

  • "you gotta end it on the one"...unless of course you want to end it on any other beat (example, playing over the bar line)

  • PLEASE!!! MORE VIDEOS!!! Also, can you guys do something on flam or drag rudiments?

  • AWESOME stuff!! THX!! Hope you upload some more stuff!

  • This is exactly what i needed to watch! I think I just went to a whole other level! Thanks man!

  • sacaboom bic aboom

  • @koolaidmanblue you dont want to have mechanical chops were you like EH ERR EHH ROBOT

  • is this written out in notation anywhere cause i cant get the changing between the licks part by ear

  • This dude just became my favorite teacher. That is how you teach. I didn't get it all, but I love his style. Thanks. ps-check out my videos.

  • OmG this man is preachin

    ( good vid)

  • omg, these cymbals sound fantastic

  • dis-com-bob-u-lated . lol.

  • He didn't play the same thing. First time with out dynamics it was two on the hands then two with the foot. Second time, "with dynamics", he did four in the hands and two with the foot. I almost missed that.

  • those dc cali drums sound amazing!!

  • great job stc.thanx for sharing.but how do end the lick if RLFF and come back on the one.is it RLFF F

  • I have to get better on my chops. This is really breaking it down. God Bless, cause I'm having trouble speeding licks up that become "congested" but great fills! You gotta make more videos bruh!!!

  • nicee mann lol he sounds like a pastor

  • Thanks peace

  • thank you very much! please post more LESSONS on gospel chops

  • @shadow9Ox Thanks there is one more coming up and we'll shoot some more soon.

  • I think the very first time I heard your first lick was the drummer for Tears for Fears on the song, Shout. Great video, this is really helping me out.

  • THANK U THANK U...SOOOOO MUCH FOR TELLING WHERE THE 1 IS SOOOOOOO IMPORTANT THEY MISS THAT ALL THE TIME.....LOVE UR WAY MAN GOD BLESS U....

  • This guy is awesome!

  • Obviously your really good, but I thought dynamics was about volume level you changed which drums you were hitting

  • @Dylan6281 he did change the volume level. the first 2 notes of the lick where ghosted...the 3rd and 4th (and 5th and 6th when he changed variations) were louder. he was right

  • @Dylan6281 mmmm i dont know man.. yeah he did play the lick over toms but i think he put a different feel into it tho,

  • @Dylan6281 yea but he also got lower with each hit if u pay atttention it was kinda weird tho

  • Comment removed

  • @Dylan6281 - i was under the impression that dynamics were more than simply volume level. They are about the tecture of the hit.. meaning where you hit it, how hard you hit it, which part of the stick you hit it with and even the timing of said stroke. All of those textural aspects will increase your dynamics... (though i could be wrong hah)

  • @Dylan6281 Dynamics are about volume level. If you pay close attention you hear ghost notes played in the chop. He did change drums but you missed the inside notes

  • @Dylan6281 dynamics is not only about volume but also touch

  • @Dylan6281 Dynamics is about volume levels. He was changing dynamics while changing the drums he was hitting.

  • @Dylan6281 Ehhh, no! He doesn't hit every drum with the same power, he changes it ie he uses dynamics. I can only assume the thumbs up you got were from guitar players! lol

  • Thank you for posting this! Awesome stuff! =)

  • Dana Davis is the man!!!!

  • 6:15 HAHAHA =)

  • i've been waiting for a lesson like this!

  • this guy's a great teacher. Well spoken and easily gets his point across.

  • Jerohn your a legend

  • Good stuff!

  • sweet!
