@Redeye1524 It's likely that the real reasons were political rather than pure anger or hatred. The trial was supposed to discredit Formosus and help the Spoleto family bolster their claim to power.
and WOW! so creepy! the fact that that psycho got everyone to go along with that plan, just... ugh! i mean, imagine if old Benedict was like, "hey! let's go dig up John Paul's body! i didn't like that guy!"
btw, this is coolhandjohnny, but i changed my name! :D
@ChelseaIRL Heh, yeah being Pope means you can make people do all kinds of ridiculous stuff, and believe me there's a lot of it. Nowadays fortunately the Pope has a lot less pull in the 'digging up dead bodies and putting them on trial' department.
@hellolove100 I love making them. I got to admit, animating a pope's eyeball falling out of its socket was fun, if exhausting. Working on a new animated short right now, hoping to return to form after that half hearted Godzilla effort.
@Rhyskit Yep, if you're wondering the trial was 9 months after he was buried which thankfully places the trial in winter. Which probably made it slightly less horrible. There's a great painting of the trial kicking about if you google it.
@ihearttheplanet Nice one. Yeah it's fairly famous as far as trials go, but still rather obscure. I'll try to make sure the next one is even MORE obscure muhahahaaaaaa.
@DanThePropMan Erm... thanks I guess. Sorry I didn't ask for comments in the video, you should probably just take it as a given that I want and love feedback from you guys on any video!
@DanThePropMan Oh yeah, heh, forgot about that. Kind of silly, that's why I put it in there! I figure it's better than letting evil robot Tom threaten people.
@hmsoctopus Yes well is can get a little confusing, especially since they tend to give their children the same names and Popes love to use the same names over and over again.
@Autobrots Me , my father and my father's.. ehm.. uncle all have the same name... And I intend to give my first child the same name... Does that make me a pope?
Loved this story! All of these guys sounded like pretty un-Godly people. Ah, the Catholic faith... giving all of this religious/spiritual power to horrible people. Speaking of religions, just curious, don't answer if you don't want - what are your personal religious beliefs, if any?
@moomootheuglyshoe Yeah, well all of this stuff occurred during the early of stages of what is known in Papal history as the pornocracy (I'm not making this up), probably the lowest point, when Popes were basically doing all the wrong things. As for religion I am an agnostic, but I'm not anti-religious or anything like that. Also, I hope no Catholics are offended by this eep.
@Autobrots I was born and raised Catholic and my parents, especially my mom, are good, practicing Catholics. I'm not offended and I don't think anyone should be. If people are going to be offended by history and facts...well....don't know what to tell them! Anyway, I think the Catholic faith has an even longer history of corrupt popes. I'm not really a Catholic these days. More like a prayerful agnostic.
@moomootheuglyshoe Actually I was raised Catholic as well, but my parents were never particularly pushy about it. And yes, corruption in the papacy goes back a ways, and funnily enough actually would become much worse after Sergius III
@Autobrots Haha. People raised Catholic always seem to have things in common when it comes to their beliefs. It's always a case of no longer being sure about God, but never really being able to deny it, either.
I'm enjoying these Enthralling Tales fellas! The animations are lovely but I do think that shortening the stories would draw in a larger crowed. The attention span of the loyal "YouTuber" is fairly short. Just a little advice, take it or leave it. As for me I like them the way there are :) Keep it up!
@onbeyondade I hear you, I usually try to stay under 5 minutes, and this one is by far the longest Enthralling Tale so far. The whole reason I started these was because I was having to cut back on so many interesting details in videos. This one was rather long, and believe me, it's the short version! Also, with videos about dead popes, I'm pretty sure I won't be turning into a superstar anytime soon. A nice base of people who dig our videos is way more important to me and Tom.
Haha, I got lost somewhere there in the middle... I'll rewatch this in the morning when I can perhaps be a little more focused. I'm lituraly falling asleep on top of my keybzzzoardzzz rigzzzzzht nowzzzzzz. Humanoid out. ;)
@theXylinder Confusing isn't it. I tried to help out with the subtitles so people wouldn't get too confused, but it's a hazard of covering this particular tale. Very complicated political situations are kind of part and parcel of middle ages Papal history.
Thanks for making this video, it was very interesting and very creepy.
Question
What did Formusus do to instill this much hatred of him?
Redeye1524 3 months ago
@Redeye1524 It's likely that the real reasons were political rather than pure anger or hatred. The trial was supposed to discredit Formosus and help the Spoleto family bolster their claim to power.

Aren't the popes infallible??? this video seem to make popes sound purely political than a spiritual leader!!!
docelmcdale 6 months ago
Wow, digging up a corpse to put it on trial turned public opinion against him? Fancy that.
Is there more to that "Guy died suddenly story?"
joecoolwasnothere 1 year ago
@joecoolwasnothere There could be something to it, but nobody mentions any foul play.

@33dgtp No, but if you become Pope you'll probably end up with one of about 6 popular names. John, Gregory, Leo, Innocent, Benedict or Clement...
