I returned my t3i to the store and got Magic Lantern on my new t2i. No AGC = amazing sound! And I'm monitoring audio through headphoned with a USB Sescom cable. And that's just some audio tools. Go Magic Lantern, go t2i!
The interesting thing is that on the t3i the hiss is louder with the Rode Videomic plugged in than with the built in camera mic! Not the case with t2i...And I know the RVM works fine.
Just want to share my experience: I just bought a t3i and the audio hiss is terrible, much worse than the t2i I used before (with just Rode Videomic plugged directly into the cam). I'm seriously considering returning the t3i and getting a t2i instead. As far as I know the Magic Lantern for t3i does not (yet?) fix audio monitoring or AGC disabling. If I have to choose between flipout screen (t3i) and better sound (t2i with and without Magic Lantern) my decision is easy. Get rid of the noisy t3i.
Could you explain why are you mentioning that the Magic Lantern will also work on the Canon 7D when their website is still saying that the Magic Lantern is not working on the 7D!!! Unless you see something that I didn't.
Thanks for this heads up! I happened to hit this by accident and boy am I stoked! I can finally use my camera for video! One questions thought - why not post the link to the site?
@KidBajan That is adding hardware, that is the opposite of Easier. I'm not likely to be walking around shooting carrying a Pre-amp in my hand, or setting up a battery rig for it.
my canon 7d would love some magic lantern firmware but unfortunately canon boosted their firmware security after the 5dii! & therefore magic lantern IS NOT available for Canon 7D (as at August 2011). The tone into one channel whilst clean audio recorded on the other ("crappy") solution is the only solution for the 7d to recorder decent audio on camera. Recording audio off camera in a zoom h4n or similar is by far the best solution. Would love the other magic lantern features too but no dice! :(
Hmm, I've been contemplating buying a Canon 600D...
Should I buy it now or wait a week for Canon to release 7 more, newer cameras all with the exact same spec... but all with minor differences(and prices) to create an illusion of choice.
You can do a "hack" by feeding a 19 khz tone (from a MP3 player) in to the left channel and the microphone in to the right channel. Dave Dugdale have a great video about it.
@HardwareFreak1 Yeah, i mentioned that in my video. That is an awful hack. Software is a much better solution, and doesn't add to the "clunkiness" of my rig.
@GingerEskimo--I have a 32" LG 120hz 1080p TV I recently acquired for $449 and is the best addition I have ever made. Clarity, contrast and comfort is far better than any of my other 19 to 24" units and the TV is outstanding. Size can be a personal choice or a necessity when space is considered but knowing what I know now, I would have made room for the 32 inch unit. I wish I could afford three more.
External recorder is the best way to go. You use the pre amp/ "auto gain" designed by a microphone company instead of a camera company. It produces great audio + you can monitor it. A Fantastic solution for compact camera users and entry level camera users.
@untouchable4rc AGC = Automatic Gain Control. You can switch between manual or automatic. When It's in manual you can adjust the input gain instead of the camera automatically increasing the gain when the person is not talking and then decreasing the gain when the person starts to talk again.
@xboxlive6 Which can be very annoying in this type of video. But with manual control of the input gain you can set it to the correct gain level and not have to worry about the camera increasing the gain after a pause.
@xboxlive6 could you tell me how to do this because i cant seem to find AGC in the menu settings? and also i cant find anything in the manual. thanks.
sorry dont want to be a bugger but it sounds the same. i have a audio technica lavalier mic i use for school presentations and it sounds better then this. but it seems like other viewers think its ok
@jh3835 Lavalier are great if you only ever have one person. I don't. I should likely have both, but I'm cheap, and I don't want to have to put a mic on before I shoot... Especially when I do a lot of back and forth and taking things apart and putting them together.
Very good video man, thanks for trying to help people out! I'm using a JVC Everio so no worries there, but MAN, this would be reaaal useful if I had one of them Canon's. Cheers.
After disabling AGC with Magic Lantern, you have to be more aware of the inverse square law when it comes to audio and maintain a pretty consistent distance between the camera/mic and the subject. I record most of my audio externally with a Zoom H4n + XLR mic and use Pluraleyes to sync it up in post.
@GabeVillatoro Correct, Magic Lantern not available for 7D and probably never will be. You can use the juicedLink DN101 to disable it. Pretty dumb Canon doesn't just add this as a custom function.
One important piece of information is WRONG - Magic Lantern IS NOT SUPPORTED for 7D.

The canon T3i already has full manual audio control... canon t2i only has auto audio controls that sucks.
