@slave2piano i don't wanna argue but heifetz is a highly esteemed violinist , even to this day . it might just sound not good because of the sound quality . but yeah . if you need to be impressed by him or something just listen to his recording of paganini's caprice 24 .
@feuermannloveex3 Actually the reason is that this pieces calls for a mute hence the softened sound in addition to his playing in a higher position in the string, even then you can hear in his older performance when he was younger the sound was even more warm.
just close your eyes and listen to his violin express his emotions for him and then think again are you really able find this man unemotional and his phenomenal playing unexpressive???
As fewer people in society play instruments - the undestanding of how the instrument is played in a given piece diminshes and a more ignorant audience may percieve excessive body movement and animation as being more artistic. I prefer the instrument doing the talking and less animated performances
Great musician and really beautiful piece. I'd like to invite watching Nuccio Trotta's performances. An unknown pianist on youtube worth listening in to. Thanks.
@huughjarse i really like the idea of that , trying to imagine what it was like when debussy saw this girl . thank you for such an interesting perspective !
@huughjarse What a lovely post! So poetic! I digress to wonder whether Debussy was in love with la fille aux... The piece is so romantic, so lyrical. Yes, Debussy was indeed gifted, to put so beautiful an emotion to music.
Wow. The first time I have heard this beautiful song performed by Mr. Heifetz. Anne Akiko Meyer's recording was the first interpretation I heard that I liked; before that, every recording I heard was done by people who sounded like they were sleepwalking through it: very boring.
This one is anything but boring. It's my new favorite. Thanks for posting it.
@violajerk His passions shows, all of the rubato and something that has always been significant for me with this piece is a sustain on the climax note at 1:27 which I've seen a lot of musicians play through. It's nice to see Heifetz sees the beauty of that point of the piece.
this piece is so beautiful. I wonder who the girl with the flaxen hair was... she must have been special. Debussy must have felt something very genuine when he composed this. There is magic within the music.
I have been watching this for years from my VCD. Every time when I watch and listen to it, I feel thrilling in my heart. I believe this piece by Debussy was initially written for piano and Heifetz transferred it to violin. The sound is so different from others who played it. Heifetz is always the God of Violin in my heart.
You're right, Debussy did originally write the piece for piano (and it's gorgeous on piano alone, also). But was it Heifetz who transcribed it for violin, or was it Fritz Kreisler? Or maybe both did? Not sure.
i wish id met heifetz but i wasn't even born when he died! :, (

Having just listened to Joshua Bell I switched to Heifetz.
How DOES he do it? The hairs on the back of my neck rose....
Incomparable.

Amazing, amazing, amazing.....I've just listened to this after watching Joshua Bell playing it.
Bell's version was great, this is astounding.

omg the excessive vibrato takes away from the meaning of the piece..
it gets soo annoying...

Does anybody know the story behind this piece?
Heifetz was the best! He premiered Korngold's violin concerto, according to what I heard on the radio.

@ccaammiiittoo1 - sorry for being a little maudlin, I was in a melancholic mood, and my mind drifts into dreamland.
Still love it though...!!

I like Joshua Bells' performance more. Heifetz doesn't seem to really care about the piece, unlike Bell, who really throws himself into it.
Jakeweinsoff1993 3 years ago
Heifetz cared intensely about everything he performed.
His was a more visually restrained performance style.
He let the violin do the talking.
Josh is a wonderful artist and a terrific person.

I think it was Heifeitz, because I have seen a violin score note of this piece saying Debussy-Hefeitz.

Très calme et doucement expressif.
It was hardly 'très calme' - until the end.

Interesting, yes it seems a little more uptempo than what I usually hear in it. Interpretation is king though
