The African system works of polygamy works quite well for a lot of reasons. The birthrate is really high so women can all look after the children and also share other work. Death by childbirth is also much higher, so its better to have two moms than none. The women are all like sisters too. However, I'm sure if the husband dies there's a big issue with dividing up the inheritance. Also, what are the older wives supposed to do when their husbands marry a beautiful 14 year old?

What we don't understand is that we put too much importance on verbal definition. One of the Masaai men said love was a private thing and perhaps an exact word for love (as in the English translation) does not exist. This does not really translate to the absence of love. I understand that she comes from a completely different way of life and that the incredible differences would come as a bit of a shock and would be hard to understand. But she can't seem to comprehend that these people are marrying for good reason. Their way of life includes hard work. One wife will not get 'er done. And as we can see from the video, these people are happy, not at all concerned about the second wife. Things such as marriage are different to serve different cultural needs.

The African system works of polygamy works quite well for a lot of reasons. The birthrate is really high so women can all look after the children and also share other work. Death by childbirth is also much higher, so its better to have two moms than none. The women are all like sisters too. However, I'm sure if the husband dies there's a big issue with dividing up the inheritance. Also, what are the older wives supposed to do when their husbands marry a beautiful 14 year old?

These already presumed notions about love & affection allegedly missing there seem to be have put into the interviewees mouths, and, as with many sloppy inspections of other cultures before, some featues of western culture are assumed and carried into the "investigation" (eg. do the interviewees mean the same thing as the interviewer when saying eg. "love"?)

What we don't understand is that we put too much importance on verbal definition. One of the Masaai men said love was a private thing and perhaps an exact word for love (as in the English translation) does not exist. This does not really translate to the absence of love. You can not study Masaai culture using British tools....What is romantic in british culture is not as romantic among the Masaai. All I am saying is that we should try to understand people in their different contexts.

Just because they dont hug and kiss it doesnt mean that they are not intimate. They do talk to each other, discuss their children. I am sure the men have ways to showing their affection to women they like other than physical hugs and kisses.
