is that a movie based off a book?

cuz when i was little i was 7 i read a book about a zoo in india during a war or famine or something so the keepers couldn't afford to care for the elephants...

the elephant's skin was too thick/tough to shoot them so they had to starve them...

but a boy felt bad for the dying, starving elephants that he used to take care of so sometimes he brought them water...

that book fucked me up.

is that what the movie is based on????
